Here is an explanation of how I rate shows. I take the mentality that shows should be rated on a level of enjoyment. The people that look at the ratings are looking for a good show to watch rather than a well produced show. While they can go hand in hand that is not always the case. Therefore I rate shows based on how much i enjoyed watching it.
This being said my ratings do not always represent enjoyment throughout the entire show. The following are a few common examples of things that greatly influence the ratings:
-Unusually good or bad ending - This is probably the biggest killer, a poorly written ending can make the events of the show seem for a waste or just pointless; on the other hand, a well written ending can make everything change and turn a pretty average show into a great show. (Examples: Junketsu no Maria, Katanagatari, Erased)
-Bad flow - While not as common as the ending it is still pretty common. Whether it is repitition or just bad storytelling the flow of the show is somehow offset and is either too fast or too slow making the show difficult to watch and subsequently lowering the rating of the show (Examples: Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu 2009 (the second season))
-Cliffhangers - I dont just mean setting up for another season. I mean flat out leaving things unsolved (Examples: Deadman Wonderland)
-Interesting or Boring Characters - For me a big part of whether or not I watch a show is the characters, if I do not like the characters I can find it difficult to continue a show. There are times though were the characters are so good or so bad that my take on the show significantly changes. This can take many different forms. There are the standard two where the entire cast is unsually good/bad, or one character is unusually good/bad. Some uncommon forms of this are things like the only character I like is killed off or doesn't get enough screen time; or even things like the interactions between the characters are unusually good/bad (Examples: Baccano!, Spice and Wolf, Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, Magi)
-Good/Bad Storytelling - Just the presentation of the story can make or break a show, done extremely well or extremely poorly and the rating will reflect that. (Examples: Baccano!, Katanagatari, Steins;Gate, Guilty Crown)
There are more but these are the most prevalent ones. I generally leave a tag on the show if the show has a rating affected by one of these.
My rating scale goes as follows:
10 - Amazing, these shows were usually ones that hooked me from the beginning or had something amazing that set it apart from other shows
9 - Above Average, these shows are ones I had little to no complaints while watching and thoroughly enjoyed the show all the way through
8- Average, was a good show that I enjoyed watching nothing revolutionary
7 - Average, felt similar to other shows or had some flaw that impacted enjoyment
6 - Below Average, generally these shows were sub-par either leaving a feeling that something was missing or just weren't all that enjoyable
5 - Bad, Shows that I had little to no enjoyment watching or had some major flaw with them
4 - Really Bad, overall the shows were just flat out poorly made there was maybe one character i liked or something but most of the times its just a bad show
3 - Terrible, either shows with a good concept but bad execution or shows that just were a bother to watch
2 - WTF, The show just was just flat out bad, on all accords
1 - Abysmal, there are no redeeming factors of shows with a 1 rating
Ratings 5-1 are generally reserved for shows i have dropped however I have both shows i have completed with a 5 ranking and a show in my dropped list with an 8 ranking. So the 5-1 rankings are not exclusive to the dropped shows; however that is the general trend.
