"BIKTORIKAAAA"
[Pre-Review Comments]
"Gosick", a story set in the fictional country of Sauville during the post-Great War era, tells the tale of two students and their misadventures solving some of the country's greatest mysteries.
I enjoyed this anime in quite a few ways. Though, despite its intriguing storyline and setting, "Gosick" is not without a considerable amount of flaws.
[Story] 7/10
I was in love with this anime for the entirety of its first half. The story felt both unique and familiar at the same time, bringing about memories of watching mystery/crime shows as a kid. The plot seemed to do very well of creating interesting and genuinely surprising scenarios
...
based around Kujo and Victorique's chemistry. Despite this, by the end of the show my overall feelings for the story were bordering "meh".
Roughly halfway through, Victorique's father, the Marquis de Blois is introduced as a character, and primary protagonist. After that point, the entire show seemed to spiral downhill in terms of consistency and strength, leaving behind a tangled mess of nonsense and cheap plot devices. It just felt like the writers were piling on far too much information and references to former episodes than it could handle.
Overall, though I enjoyed the first half of Gosick, the second portion/ending just seemed to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
[Art] 7/10
There's not a lot I can really say about the artwork. It's about average, nothing in particular stands out among other animes of the same time period. However, it's decent enough; therefore, I'll be giving it a score of "good".
[Sound] 6/10
Gosick's soundtrack was not a very memorable one, for me at least. I was not a big fan of the intro/closing sequences either, providing my overall score of 6/10.
[Character] 8/10
This score is heavily based off of Victorique's character. She, in essence carries the entire show; the entire overarching plot is based around her after all. To me, she was one of the few genuinely interesting characters in this show, despite its large amount of supporting characters.
Kujo on the other hand... well, he's Kujo. Basically what you would expect for a generic male protagonist. Japanese, dark hair, neutral characteristics, designed to protect the female lead. His character showed hardly any exception to the norm, which somewhat disappointed me. Oh, also, did he really have to yell "BIKTORIKAAAA! VEKTOREKAAAA" about 5 times in the same sentence, every time he saw her? Probably not.
Most of the supporting characters felt somewhat "expendable", and are designed for one specific purpose. Victorique's brother, "The Inspector" was clearly brought in to add a bit of flair to the series, however I was disappointed with what they did to his character in the end. Overall, I'd say (thanks to Victorique) the characters deserve an 8/10.
[Enjoyment] 8/10
As mentioned previously, despite its flaws I had fun with this anime. It kept me entertained from beginning to end, and there isn't much I can argue about that. I'd say it's a pleasant addition to the mystery genre for that matter.
[Overall] 7/10
Despite my overall enjoyment, there were many negative aspects which I simply could not ignore. I think 7/10 is a score which best expresses my feelings for this anime.
