"Jerk Boy does show that he actually has a soul and there are hints throughout to bait the viewer to continue watching—which worked, but he undoes those niceties with some spectacular coldness and I probably would’ve dropped the show except that “it’ll get better” kept ringing in my ears. The heroine’s major “redeeming points” are her determination (which could be seen as a negative as well) and her overall good-nature. She’s your typical book dumb, cute clumsy girl, and you’ll usually see her beaming or worried. It’s kind of funny how dumb she is, but at the same time, it’s irritating because to me, it extends beyond academics. As an extra irritation, I found her friends annoying and his mother especially grating, and I probably felt worse for Jerk Boy overall than I ever did for the heroine—oddly enough. By the end, I didn’t hate them, but it felt like such a long journey and . . . ugh. Just watch it. "

"...trudging through a tar pit to get to a lollipop."

"I don’t purposefully avoid popular recommendation, but it doesn’t sway me much, either."

"There are times when I envy this ability in some people! I really like a lot of things a lot of the time, and I care about the people I care for immensely, often to the point of sacrificing myself without realizing it. I definitely have things and people I will not tolerate, but I strive for balance and that often leads me into a middle ground battling it out with myself (as in this issue with my friend)."

"I do know passion, and how far I will fall for someone, but the darker side, the hate and coldness, I don’t like going there. Which is kinda funny, because I can be one hell of a bitch and so good at it, too."

"I still wonder about the people I’ve burned bridges from, for example."

"Speaking of being a bitch, I should go reply to these IMs. Only so many times I can read “meow” before my eye twitches. "

Yeah, and after watching the second and third episode, I realise that the major thing that is confusing and consequently hard to follow is the non-chronological order that changes all the time! Haha and now I wonder how I ever found DRRR! hard to follow xDDD

Yeah the art style in Baccano! makes the characters all look alike somehow (unlike in DRRR! where characters like Shizuo and Izaya are distinguishable simply by their looks!) plus they are all almost dressed the same way lolol xD

Its hard to figure out which scene is before or after which scene because sometimes they don't tell you which year it is >< or even if they do, its hard to tell what followed after what!

I can't wait for everything to start falling into place! :DD

Just started Baccano!, finished the first ep and had to rewatch it. Hell of confusing xD oh wells, DRRR! started off pretty all-over-the-place too, but I think it had a smaller cast? And the characters are much easier to differentiate lol

Hm, well, maybe I'll watch it. I think, if anything, your criticism just motivated me even more to watch it. Are there any hints of Jerk Boy caring for the girl, or is he just cold, through and through? Does the heroine have any redeeming points?
Speaking of college, have you ever heard of Honey and Clover? It's not on your list, but it's pretty popular. It's a josei set in college. I heard a bad review of it by somebody who shares, for the most part, the same likes and dislikes as me. But it's so recommended by everybody else.

Worse shoujo? Try reading Kare First Love. I barely finished the first chapter, it was so god-awful. Usually, when discussing shoujo that I dislike, I try to remember that everyone has different tastes and that just because I dislike something, doesn't mean it's terrible. But Kare First Love, I don't care who I'm talking to, should've been appropriately titled "How to Write an Utter Piece of Shit and Still Have a Reasonable Fanbase".

Wow, without trying to sound rude, your friend sounds pathetic. I've had feelings for a person before who barely saw me as a friend, let alone a girlfriend. Although I was initially in denial of his rejection of me, I eventually knew that the only way to get over him was to ignore him. I never answered his texts, I no longer sought him out in a crowd, and when he'd try to talk to me, I wouldn’t even look him in the eye or nod my head in acknowledgement. It sounds a bit cold now, but I'm one of those people who is truly either in love or in hate. When I love someone (no matter the type of love it is), I am affectionate, giving, and a tad bit clingy. But when I dislike someone, they are treated lower than dirt. I don't claim to be a model person, but I knew what I had to do in order to break free of my attachment to him, and so I did it. I miss his friendship like crazy (it's only expected that our relationship would be ruined after my ignoring him), but I'm glad to be independent. I'd cry myself to sleep basically every night before - I was that bad.

You should try to ignore your friend. Not in the way I did (obviously), but just enough so that she can forget about being with you.

“…and she gets jealous if she doesn't think the people I'm interested in are worthy.”
Has she ever thought someone was worthy?

“So when I see it displayed so often that the way to win over the person you desire is to just hound them until they cave, it bugs me. “
Yup, it’s basically encouraging people to remain in unhealthy relationships with people who want nothing to do with them. If “hounding” ever actually worked, I’d probably be in a relationship by now, considering how persistent I, as well as others, can be.

“I’ve been in a ranting, hyper-critical mood lately, I apologize. I was sick the past couple of weeks (and I don’t usually get sick) and I think I just haven’t been getting enough sleep.”
That’s fine. I’m in a hyper-critical mood 24/7.

“Or maybe I need a change of scenery after being cooped in the house.”
I know what you mean. I have nowhere to go. I’ve been trying to make plans with people who are not out of state for the summer, but people keep either getting sick, changing the plans last minute to do things I don’t want to do, or canceling/rescheduling.

"dumb girl with heart is smitten with the school's #1 smart cool jerk boy that every other girl is also smitten with."
Cliche, but I might be able to handle it - pretty much all shoujo has a selfless, compassionate, air headed girl in love with the boy all the bad girls want. It's annoying, but I've learned to live with it. Even my favorite shoujo manga has that (although it put a new spin on it, so it was fairly forgivable).

Manga/Anime I've Read That Sticks To That Cliche:
-Lovely Complex
-High School Debut
-Maid-sama
-Kare First Love
-Hiyokoi
-Kimi ni Todoke
-Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji
-Binkan Kiss
-Seiyuu Ka!

"She tries to confess her feelings but he couldn't care less and rudely dismisses her in front of classmates."
Assholian move, but at least it stays true to real life high school boys.

"Due to circumstances, she ends up living with jerk boy and his family and though she reminds herself of what a jerk he is, she cannot seem to get over him."
Hate that. I saw that in...
-Binken Kiss
-Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji
-Seiyuu Ka!
-Shugo Chara!
-Many other titles whose names I don't care to remember

"Everything she does from here out is to show him that she's not as dumb as he thinks..."
Well, that's more of a pride thi-

"... and that she deserves to be by his side."
That is infuriating and revolting.

"I couldn't stand how he treated her or that she put up with it."
My forth biggest pet peeve in shoujo. I see it way too often.

"I also don't like the idea that feelings should be reciprocated simply because one person is utterly devoted to another or that stubbornly loving someone will win them over."
Lol, it's totally unrealistic. It doesn't matter how loyal, devoted, and dependable a person is - if you don't like their personality romantically, nothing is going to happen. The mangaka is living in a fantasy world, where loving someone is enough to make them love you back.

I see Strawberry Panic as being the yuri world's Junjou Romantica; really only enjoyable if you're into the genre, and aren't massively picky or with a set of strong morals.

I've been suggested Aoi Hana, too, and I plan to read it soon. I was complaining about how Strawberry Panic was awful, and they told me that Aoi Hana would compensate for the trash I was subjected to earlier.

"Ai-yai-yai-yai . . . ."
Stop that. I keep hearing Shakira's voice.
Cpl_Ballerina Aug 6, 2012 12:28 AM
No, sorry. No hints.
Cpl_Ballerina Aug 6, 2012 12:16 AM
Haha, thanks! I tweaked it a bit, in order to sound less silly and sentences less chunky, but it's mostly still the same.

I don't interrupt conversation to pick debates; I tend to seize opportunities for argument, but only if they're hanging freely in the air. Otherwise, I just let it go.
My mom is constantly arguing semantics when we talk. Occasionally, it's funny, but more often it just gets on my nerves; it seems she's more invested in her remarks on sentence structure than the actual topic.

I used to write a lot. I miss it, but ever since a certain event happened in my life (not traumatizing, either), I haven't felt the desire to. However, I enjoy editing literature.

"Fruits Basket. Ai-yai-yai."
I was just listening to La Tortura by Shakira, so that "ai-yai-yai" came out more erotic than I assume you meant it to be. Ai, ai, ai-yai-yai-yai...

"Most shoujo doesn't actually appeal to me."
Same. Besides, I get my fill of cliché, stereotypical shoujo wub from pseudo-rape(?) yaoi. Those two genres have way too damn bubbles.

"Maid-sama I enjoyed just because the heroine didn't turn into a pile of mush needing to be saved all the time and wasn't bitchy just because she felt entitled. ToraDora doesn't appeal to me because it seems like it would play up that latter note."
Well, I disliked Maid-sama for my own reasons. Although I will give credit where credit is due; at least, Misaki is better than Taiga. Although Ryuuji is better than Usui.

I've actually been contemplating watching the anime for Itazura na Kiss. Is the girl that bad?

I watched one or two episodes of Strawberry Panic; it was awful. Pinky was your typical, annoying, weak, Mary Sue shoujo heroine and the silver haired girl was a pompous bitch with a too-cliché-to-work personality.
Neva heard of Working!

"I might just go check out Seven Days instead. I keep seeing that mentioned here and there. You liked that, right?"
Well, it's not listed as one of my favorite manga for no reason. Seven Days has beautiful artwork, a nice, serene tone, relatable and likable characters, and no shounen ai/shoujo clichés. It's a gem, in my opinion.

I suck at word scrambles, too.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
