Manga: Sangokushi
Both stories talk about conquering China. Both main characters ara kind, virtuous, and care for the people. Both stories have overpowered characters that can't be defeated by "common people". Both stories have war, strategies and intrigue. Both are masterworks.

Manga: JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 4: Diamond wa Kudakenai
I could recommend any JoJo series for starters, but Diamond is unbreakable is the part that mostly matches with houshin engi, since the characters are really charismatic... maybe the drawings are really different, but the feeling of the series are almost the same.

They are both fun, mixing magic and monsters, Funny and smart ass protagonists, a REALLY HELL OF A STRONG archenemy, a large number of partners... they are really similar series. ah, both also have shitty anime versions lol
