Main similarity is the "Student Council" theme. As well as the main characters being childhood friends and going around solving school problems. Main difference is this involves fights or "duels" with magical items/powers called "Maken".

Both protagonists leave home to attend school where they meet mysterious yet powerful girls who greatly change their lives. Similarly Kanachime deals with magical swords whereas Maken-Ki deals with magical elements and artifacts. The plots deviate shortly after but the priciple of a young man wanting to become stronger are strongly present in both.
