Chances are you read NHK first as it is better known so I am going to focus more on NHCE. So like NHK, NHCE is a manga adaptation from a novel by Takimoto Tatsuhiko, his first novel to be exact. And from the beginning of the story, we instantly see that we're in familiar ground. Takimoto seems to draw all his main male characters from the same model, he himself that is. Yamamoto could easily be seen as a young Satō, who hasn't become a hikikomori yet. He is a depressed, lazy, immature high school student and a coward, who'd rather hide in his imaginary "cool"  read more

Very much the same on a psychological level. Both are deep, while on the surface they don't look like it. Both cope with the surpressing of memories and certain emotions. Both are very good mangas, indeed.

In aesthetics these two mangas are very different. Tezuka, with his corpulent characters and often small squares on his pages, doesn't look as beautiful/cool/evolved as modern manga. "Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge" is far from as mature and epic as Hi no Tori, on the contrary it gives a somewhat pubertal impression. But both stories tell something about death and about living your life, and that's why I make this recommendation. Under the coat of adventure and humor, both stories ask questions that are relevant for all living beings!

Both manga are psychologically deep, where the lead female is struggling with a lot of mental baggage and the male is involved in a particular way. Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge and SWWEEET drag emotion out of the reader and leave them satisfied but wanting more. Definite must reads.

The protagonist is suddenly thrust from his normal life into some kind of outrageous fight. He has to overcome tough mental hardships from his past, and in order to escape reality, he joins the "fight" and tries to be of use to the girl fighter he falls in love with. Both have some pretty funny moments and are both great reads.

Chainsaws have a significant placement in these two action-packed series.

Both stories have a very similar bittersweet mood and atmosphere to it, even though there's no similarity to plot.

The female leads in these two publications share many similarities. For instance, they both have male followers who they develop a special kind of romance with. Another similarity is their quest for one particular being - Haruka and Atomsk in FLCL, and Eri and the Chainsaw Man in Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge. Furthermore, they are well adept at combat.
