Multiple factions/characters wants to pursue their ideals and to do so they have to fight other factions/characters whose goals and ideals conflict with that. Fights are usually done with some strategizing involved and death of the characters isn't shied away from. Those novels doesn't really have a main protagonist, it's more of a "pick your side", as the motivations and reasons of their actions are explained in depth for many characters.

Both are pretty dark and have alot of characters that are morally grey.

Considered the best novels in the writer's works which started off their career spawning more masterpieces that draws in fans to build up the community today Plot deals with factions vying for power resulting in casualties and a domino effect that triggers plot twists and reveals Past in each characters deals with so much anguish and sadness that you can relate to that character particularly Huey and Kiritsugu Strongly deals with assassins even the ones who are the strongest in their generation (Kiritsugu and Claire) whose twisted philosophy revolves around evil destroying evil A mysterious supernatural artifact (Holy Grail and Philosopher's Stone) are said to be omnipotent granting a  read more

Story about a group of heroes rather than one central protagonist, through with various strategies and plans mingle to create interestingly unstable relationships between the characters.

Both have fantasy battles centred around a protagonist with a burdened past. SAO is lighter in tone and has romance, whereas F/Z is undoubtedly darker and focuses on character motives. In each series, you will find a good mix of battles and mechanics, with amazing character interactions.
