Its not the first time I have heard of the tunnel being used as a plot device. It is all too common at this point.
A gateway to another world, more specifically the world of the dead and our protagonist getting entangled with it. He encounters his presumably dead friend and upon seeing his friend, all his troubled memories and the regrets that come with it surface.
The matter with one shots is that not everyone hits. I could have been the person on the opposite side of the bridge had it been a manga. The length is often a barrier and it shows. While the
...
story itself is not good, its absolutely basic in its writing, but its potential and implementation also is cut short due to the length.
No backstory or visible character development makes the characters empty shells which itself renders the whole story feel weightless. Its like some random guy coming up to you and start telling his sob story. Rather than wanting to listen it you would want him to finish speaking as soon as possible. Cause I don't care about him to listen him. Same with this. I don't care about the character enough to actually feel what he is going through cause there wasn't anytime to build up some connection with the readers.
And about the story, the story is like a tree and the length of one shots often act as scissors, cutting off every other branch which is not the main one. As I already said it limits the potential for other subplots which could have introduced some life in this overly basic plot.
