1 Litre of Tears succeeds in showing us the insignificance of life through the importance of "meaning"
The fragility of being human
I think the main message that this manga shows us is how everything that we don't give so much importance, like the fact that we move, walk, talk, eat, or even breathe, is in fact of immense importance, even more so when we have lost the ability to perform such basic actions as those already mentioned above, and above all, how life is something so fragile that we often don't

treat it the way we should.
1 Litre of Tears tells the story of a girl named Aya, and how she gradually discovers a disease that gradually destroys the bones in her body, and all the difficulties she goes through during this phase of discovering her disease. From the very beginning, we see a very important message, just in the premise and the presentation of the conflict of this story, which is the passage of time, and how everything can change very quickly, where one day we're getting ready to go out, to go to school or to work, and the next day we're stuck in a hospital bed, basically trying to avoid the inevitable death, and this is what the manga talks about, about the passage of time, how everything passes by in the blink of an eye, making us even lose the sensibility of just appreciating the moment, you know? We are always stuck in our routines, where we never have time for anything, we are always doing something, trying to be more productive, doing this or that to please others, but we almost never stop to enjoy the "time", where we just breathe deeply, and try to feel that moment, feel the wind touch our skin, listen to the sounds of nature, or even be really present in each moment of our life, and not just live in automatic mode. We mentalize a whole agenda of processes and tasks, and how we can fit a certain task into a certain period, and little by little this makes us lose this sensitivity of being present, of being grateful for what we have and are, and this is what Aya learns throughout the manga, the importance of being present.
The small details of the whole
As I said above, Aya, little by little, is learning to live with that disease that does not allow her to be a "normal" girl. Due to this disease, Aya cannot do basic things that anyone can do, such as walk, eat, among several other things, and this forces her to develop other abilities in her life, mainly the ability of perception, where gradually, she can perceive the nuances of life, you know? She can be really present in all moments of her life, much due to her motor limitation, she always observes in detail how people behave, or how they react to her condition, and this makes her more resistant to all the unconscious prejudices of the people around her. Then, despite not wanting to, Aya, through a terrible illness, manages to develop this ability that few people have nowadays, which is the ability to feel and live the now, to enjoy and experience every little moment that life has to offer, and it is in these small details of life that true happiness lies, isn't it? Well, like everything in life, everything has a positive and negative side.
The unconscious prejudice
Another theme addressed by this manga is the prejudice that a disabled person goes through in the course of his life, from the looks of pity to the unconsciously mean comments, all this makes Aya more and more angry with her condition, angry to be the object of comments, of looks of pity, and this, at least in my opinion, is something little discussed in society in general, the lack of tact and sensitivity with people who have some kind of disability, be it motor or psychological, and this lack of sensitivity goes from the aspects of coexistence, to government support for these people, because they are excluded in the most diverse ways, be it from the coexistence of other "normal" people, or even by the fact that there are no infrastructures for the disabled person to be able to move around freely, without needing the help of a stranger on the street, you know? Of course this discussion is much deeper than that, because there are several social aspects that go into this discussion, but the fact is that these people are increasingly excluded from our society, and I particularly feel that we are slowly regressing in this sense, bringing back concepts like segregation, where mothers are aborting their children because of the risk of them being born with some disability, and how this is becoming something natural and socially accepted. In other words, we are finding it normal to take the lives of children because they are not born the way the mother wants, and make no mistake thinking that this is for the good of the child itself, because we as a society are turning a blind eye to the murder of individuals under the pretext that "the child would suffer too much if born," and we are using this as a pretext to take away the right to live from these children, solely and exclusively because the mother thinks the child will suffer too much? But is it really? Today, we find such atrocious acts natural in our society, and little by little these same children will be killed for the most futile reasons possible, such as not being born with fair skin, or for not having the color of eyes that the mother wanted the child to have... And I ask you: does this remind you of anything? Killing people of "inferior" ethnicities, killing disabled people, does that remind you of any particular totalitarian regime?
A different but functional narrative structure
This manga has a simple yet very different narrative structure from what we see around us. Unlike most anime and manga, it doesn't aim to build multi-faceted characters with big dilemmas or traumas to overcome, despite the fact that the protagonist has an illness, I don't see this as an obstacle to overcome, but rather something the protagonist needs to learn to live with, you know? The author manages to use a relatively simple story to convey her messages, and there are few stories that manage to do this satisfactorily, and 1 Litre of Tears manages to do this in a very natural way.
It is very easy to fall into clichés when we have a narrative structure based on events, where often, certain patterns are used so that the story follows, at least in part, the classic narrative structures we are already used to, but in this manga, the author managed to show us believable characters, with their traumas and difficulties, but not only that, the author managed to pass her messages in her subtext, and not only that, she instigated us to debate such themes, and this debate, in turn, takes us to several different places. ... So all in all, I would say that this manga, above all, is good for being different, it is a breath of relief in such a saturated industry.
As human being
1 Litre of Tears, above all, is about maturation, it shows us, through a story of acceptance, how fragile and prone to failure we are, and how all of this, in the end, makes us only human. This work brings up a debate that has long been put aside, which is the recognition of people who are on the margins of our society, people who sometimes suffer from segregation before they are even born, and how this all needs to be widely discussed in our society. 1 Litre of Tears was a very meaningful read for me, it brought up several feelings and reflections that I haven't read in a manga in a long time, and this alone makes this manga something special.

A fragilidade de ser humano
Acredito que a principal mensagem que esse mangá nos mostra é como tudo aquilo que não damos tanto importância, como o fato de nos movimentar, de andar, falar, comer ou até mesmo respirar, na verdade tem uma importância imensa, ainda mais quando perdemos a habilidade de realizar ações tão básicas, como as já citadas acima, e acima de tudo, como a vida é algo tão frágil, que muitas vezes não a tratamos da forma devida.
1 Litro de Lágrimas conta a história de uma garota chamada Aya, e de como aos poucos ela vai descobrindo uma doença que gradativamente destrói os ossos de seu corpo, e todas as dificuldades que ela passa durante essa fase da descoberta de sua doença. Já de começo, vemos uma mensagem muito importante, apenas na premissa e na apresentação do conflito dessa história, que é a passagem do tempo, e de como tudo pode mudar de maneira muita rápida, onde em um dia estamos nos arrumando para sair, para ir à escola ou trabalho, e no outro estamos presos em uma cama de hospital, basicamente tentando evitar a morte inevitável, e é muito sobre isso que o mangá fala, sobre a passagem do tempo, como tudo passa em um piscar de olhos, nos fazendo até mesmo perder a sensibilidade de simplesmente aproveitar o momento, sabe? Estamos sempre presos em nossas rotinas, onde nunca temos tempo para nada, sempre estamos fazendo algo, tentado ser mais produtivos, fazendo isso ao aquilo para agradar aos outros, mas quase nunca paramos para aproveitar o “tempo”, onde simplesmente respiramos fundo, e tentamos sentir aquele momento, sentir o vento tocar em nossa pele, ouvir os sons da natureza, ou mesmo estar de fato presente em todos os momento de nossa vida, e não só viver no modo automático. Mentalizamos toda uma agenda de processos e tarefas, e como podemos encaixar determinada tarefa em um determinado período, e aos poucos isso vai nos fazendo perder essa sensibilidade de estar presente, de ser grato por aquilo que temos e somos, e é isso que Aya aprende no decorrer do mangá, a importância de estar presente.
Os pequenos detalhes do todo
Como havia dito mais acima, Aya, aos poucos vai aprendendo a conviver com aquela doença que não permite ela ser uma garota “normal”. Devido a essa doença, Aya não consegue fazer coisas básicas que qualquer pessoa consegue fazer, como andar, comer, dentre diversas outras coisas, e isso a obriga a desenvolver outras habilidades em sua vida, principalmente a habilidade da percepção, onde gradativamente, ela consegue perceber as nuances da vida, sabe? Ela consegue estar realmente presente em todos os momentos de sua vida, muito devido a sua limitação motora, ela sempre observa com detalhes como as pessoas se comportam, ou como elas reagem a sua condição, e isso a vai deixando mais resistente a todo o preconceito inconsciente das pessoas ao seu redor. Então, mesmo não querendo, Aya, através de uma terrível doença, consegue desenvolver essa habilidade que poucas pessoas têm hoje em dia, que é a habilidade de sentir e viver o agora, de aproveitar e experienciar cada pequeno momento que a vida tem a oferecer, e é nesses pequenos detalhes da vida, que mora a real felicidade, não é mesmo? Bem, como tudo na vida, tudo tem um lado positivo de negativo.
O preconceito inconsciente
Outro tema que esse mangá aborda é o preconceito que um deficiente passa ao longo de sua vida, desde os olhares de pena, até os comentários inconscientemente maldosos, tudo isso faz com que Aya cada vez mais tenha raiva de sua condição, raiva de ser motivos de comentários, de olhares piedosos, e isso, ao menos ao meu ver, é algo pouco discutido na sociedade no geral, na falta de tato e de sensibilidade com as pessoas que possuem algum tipo de deficiência, seja ela motora ou psicológica, e essa falta de sensibilidade vai desde os aspectos da convivência, até o suporte governamental a essas pessoas, pois elas são excluídas das mais diversas formas, seja da convivência das demais pessoas “normais”, ou até mesmo pelo fato de não existir uma infraestrutura para que a pessoa com deficiência possa de locomover livremente, sem precisar da ajuda de um estranho na rua, sabe? Claro que essa discussão é muito mais profunda do que isso, pois existem vários aspectos sociais que entram nessa discussão, mas o fato é que essas pessoas são cada vez mais excluídas de nossa sociedade, e eu particularmente sinto que aos poucos estamos regredindo nesse sentido, trazendo de volta conceitos como a segregação, onde mães estão abortando seus filhos devido ao risco de ele nascer com alguma deficiência, e como isso está se tornando algo natural e socialmente aceito. Em outras palavras, nós estamos achando normal ceifar a vida de crianças, pelo fato da mesma não nascer do jeito que a mãe quer, e não se engane pensando que isso é para o próprio bem da criança, pois nós, como sociedade, estamos fechando os olhos para o assassinato de indivíduos, com o pretexto de que “a criança iria sofrer demais caso nascesse”, e estamos usando isso de pretexto para retirar o direito de viver dessas crianças, única e exclusivamente porque a mãe acha que a criança irá sofrer demais... Mas será mesmo? Hoje, estamos achando natural tais atos atrozes em nossa sociedade, e aos poucos, essas mesmas crianças vão ser mortas pelos motivos mais fúteis possíveis, como por exemplo não terem nascido com a pele clara, ou por não terem a cor dos olhos que a mãe queria que a criança tivesse... E aí eu te pergunto, isso te lembra algo? Matar pessoas de etnias “inferiores”, matar pessoas deficientes, isso te faz lembrar de algum regime totalitário em especial?
Uma estrutura narrativa diferente, mas funcional
Essa obra possui uma estrutura narrativa simples, e ao mesmo tempo bem diferente das que vemos por aí. Diferentemente da maior parte dos animes e mangás, ela não tem o objetivo de construir personagens multifacetados, com grandes dilemas ou traumas a serem superados, apesar do fato da protagonista ter uma doença, não vejo isso como de fato um obstáculo a ser superado, e sim algo que a protagonista precisa aprender a conviver, sabe? A autora consegue utilizar de uma história relativamente simples, para passar suas mensagens, e são poucas as histórias que conseguem fazer isso de maneira satisfatória, e 1 Litro de Lágrimas consegue fazer isso de maneira muito natural.
É muito fácil cair em clichês quando temos uma estrutura narrativa baseada em acontecimentos, onde muitas vezes, se é utilizado de certos padrões para que a história siga, pelo menos em partes, as clássicas estruturas narrativas que já estamos acostumados, mas nesse mangá, a autora conseguiu nos mostrar personagens críveis, com seus traumas e dificuldades, mas não se limitou a somente isso, a autora conseguiu nos passar suas mensagens em seu subtexto, e não só isso, ela nos instigou a debater tais temas, e esse debate, por usa vez, nos leva para vários lugares distintos... Então no final dia, eu diria que esse mangá, acima de tudo é bom por ser diferente, é um sopro de alivio em uma indústria tão saturada.
Como ser humano
1 Litro de Lágrimas, acima de tudo, fala sobre amadurecimento, ele nos mostra, através de uma história de aceitação, como somos frágeis e propensos a falhar, e como tudo isso, no final, nos torna apenas humanos. Essa obra traz à tona o debate que a muito tempo está sendo jogado de lado, que é reconhecimento de pessoas que estão a margem de nossa sociedade, pessoas essas que por vezes sofrem de segregação antes mesmos de nascerem, e como tudo isso precisa ser amplamente discutido em nossa sociedade. 1 Litro de lágrimas foi uma leitura muito significativa para mim, ela trouxe à tona diversos sentimentos e reflexões que a muito tempo eu não tinha lido em um mangá, e isso, por si só, já torna essa obra algo especial.

1 Litre no Namida was one of the best experiences I ever had reading a work, be it a book or a manga. It brought me so many feelings while reading that it is hard to describe it objectively without imposing my opinion. The story is inspired by real facts and tells the story of Ikeuchi Aya, a girl diagnosed with an incurable degenerative disease at 15 years old. Aya fought against the disease and continued to live her life until her death at 25 years old. The work is very touching and inspiring.
