This manhwa is seriously underrated…
I read the English version on Webtoon and I am so impressed by it, the thought and meticulousness put into the plot and characters is superior to many epic animes or mangas I’ve seen before. It starts off a bit confusing which may have turned away some readers but it all clears up, I promise. I actually think that it was made intentionally confusing towards the beginning because as a reader, you don’t know more information than what the characters know. When things do get revealed, it will knock you off your feet and the plot twists are delicious as they
...
are heart wrenching.
Characters 10/10
All the main characters are really fleshed out with backgrounds, complicated emotions and motives, and even with the villains they’re not dry or one dimensional, though some may seem like it at first. Even the ultimate villain gets a backstory and reflects the real-life phenomenon of cycles of abuse. Jin is probably the COOLEST and SEXIEST main character ever, he’s childish and super loving of his son but throughout the story you learn that he had a horribly traumatic past, which shaped a lot of how he is now and explains his actions, especially when he acts kinda unusual for his age and role.
Miryu is his son and you really get to see him grow from a naive child who despite being mature for his age, still has to face his difficult situation and learn how to be responsible and more realistic.
The supporting characters are all really more like main characters because they all have backstories that interweave with the other characters, and you really see the impacts that each of the characters had on each other.
Story 10/10
The plot really is well crafted and all loose strings and confusing bits get resolved and cleared up. There are some AWESOME action scenes and the drama and mystery will keep you on your toes.
Art 6-9/10
This is a manhwa where you will really see how the artist improves over time. The beginning is pretty shoujo-y and it’s hard to differentiate between Jin and Miryu but it becomes easy pretty soon after and the art only gets better. There were frames where I was just amazed by the depth, lighting, and detail in it and I’d stare at it for a while. The art becomes really spectacular in key moments.
Editing
Okay bare with me, the editing is not the best… but it’s not really the authors fault. The translation is a little weird sometimes, and it gets kinda crowded by the speech-bubbles sometimes but it’s not detrimental to the story and you won’t miss out on anything important. You just might have to reread a few of the frames more than once to catch the flow of it and what the translation meant to say. I think this is another detail that may have put off readers at first but it’d be really sad if that’s the case because the story is so worth it.
Overall this is one of the best webcomics on Webtoon and it’s a crime that it isn’t featured as much as other works. The English version has been completed as of 2020 so you don’t have to wait for any episode releases. Please give this manhwa a chance and show it as much love as you can, the author certainly deserves it. <3
