NOTE: As our first featured discussion, this is a example of what a topic in this club could be like:

In Toaru Kagaku no Railgun,

We experience synesthesia in real life when we salivate as we are seeing something that tastes nice, or are perhaps controlled by this phenomenon when advertisers put sensory details in ads.

From Wikipedia: Synesthesia (also spelled synæsthesia or synaesthesia, from the ancient Greek σύν [syn], "together", and αἴσθησις [aisthēsis], "sensation") is a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.

Synesthetes have even used it to boost memory!

So what are your experiences of synesthesia? Are advertisers controlling our minds? How else could we take advantage of this phenomenon?

For this first thread only, feel free also to comment about the quality of the thread. Is phrasing a topic like this good, with the bolded parts, or is it still TL;DR?

I believe it could be nice if you add the anime name in the title, avoiding spoilers.

I'm a medium (I don't know if it's the right word in English), so I have some belief that a energy of some place can affect people minds in this place.

Example: if this place was a graveyard with regrets from people that died in war, we can somewhat feel this "regret".

I don't know much about synesthesia, but I remember reading an article about it being tested to reinforce learning and memory.
I've seen a documentary about people who had a bridge between certain parts of the brain more developed and that caused them to recieve mixed sensitive signals; some claimed to associate colours and tastes to different sounds, and apparently brain scans showed brain activity in the visual and taste centers when the subjects were exposed to different sounds.

Since I don't have experience about synesthesia I thought I'd share some trivia.
About the thread, I agree you should add in the title what anime you're referencing, and maybe reformat a little. Other than that, the post seemed short enough, so I wouldn't mind it being a little longer or not.

I've heard of synesthesia before, but most of this is new to me. It sounds pretty interesting, and I didn't know it was in Railgun (even though I watched it X3)
I found a pretty cool video based on the idea of synthesia if anyone wants to watch it :3
here :D

I think the format is good for the thread, I agree with the including anime title though. It was interesting though, so I read it all :)

Nice thread, unfortunately I'm too thick to understand what Synesthesia exactly is.

I've never had a sense of Synesthesia, though I did already know what it was. It was something that attracted me to watch this one Anime.

The protagonist in Canaan has Synesthesia, converting sound to smell and color to sound, ect. though she also has heightened senses and the ability to see emotions and intents as colours which isn't really part of real Synesthesia.

Would say more, but don't want to give away spoilers and what not for those interested in watching it.

Thanks for the suggestions! :-)

Wow... that video was quite the strange experience...

Hm... now I feel like watching Canaan, too! It sounds so interesting, and plus, it has synesthesia.
