It's time for the first I<3Y&SA Monthly Spotlight Show of the new year and it's time for some piracy! Each month a new entry will be added to encourage memebers of this club to discover a show they haven't seen, to rewatch an old favorite or to give one a second chance. The shows may be Yuri (implied or explicit), Shoujo Ai or even shows that don't quite qualify for either of those, but we feel our members would like. This January of 2014, the Spotlight is on Mouretsu Pirates! (Bodacious Space Pirates!) What is it? Don't try this at home, even though it'd make you look really cool. Mouretsu Pirates is a show about Marika Kato, a high school girl whose normal everyday life is turned upside down when she inherits the position of captain for a pirate ship! IN SPAAAAACE! It's an absolute joyful ride and surprisingly a lot smarter than the concept or title may initially lead you to believe. Why should I watch it? I wasn't prepared to answer this. I didn't even prepare a new joke. I don't think I've ever really mentioned it before or anything, so I doubt any of you would know this but I'm kind of a fan of this show. EHH!? Ahem, in any case, I guarantee no matter how wide anyone opened their ears, I could fill their heads with reasons I absolutely love this show but I'll try to keep this as brief as I personally can. By the way, I got a few request to do this show next, so don't blame me entirely for using all my aces in the first two hands! Mouretsu Pirates features a cast of strong, independent and capable female characters pulling off extraordinary feats. It's lighthearted in that the drama never gets too intense but you'll still be at the edge of your seat at the peak of action. There's a sense of awareness that the show's concept is over the top but it manages to take it's own content seriously and more importantly, respectfully. Space travel and battles spare no details and they are never dumbed down for the audience. The "piracy" in the show is actually more to do with privateering, showmanship and a bit of political grand standing that is the result of wars no longer being fought by the time our story begins. This is another female dominant casted show, like last month's Saki but unlike Saki, don't expect too much in the ways of fan service. There's some sprinkled in here and there but for a show with the international name "Bodacious Space Pirates" and being adapted by a series of Light Novels called "Miniskirt Pirates", it's surprisingly restrained. No girl in the show is there simply to look at and everyone is shown to be capable at their roles. The Hakuhou Girls Academy all Girls' Yacht Club, of which Marika joins, is actually fully composed of members with a history of skills perfect for any space piracy operation. Mouretsu Pirates is 26 episodes long and very easily divided into movie sized arcs, with some bridging episodes in-between. You'll learn with Marika the secret history of her parents' former profession and learn why she may have been born to take the helm of her late father's ship, the Bentenmaru. You'll learn about what it actually means to be a space pirate and how this whole piracy business all got started. You'll travel with the crew and a royal princess across space in the hunt for a golden ghost ship. You'll go pirating with the Hakuhou Girls Academy Yacht Club and even take a break to do some pod Dingy-racing. If that's not enough, I'll remind you that this is the open universe and you never know what might be lurking out of the shadows next! A Mouretsu Pirates movie will be coming out next month too! Expect Blu-Rays sometime in 2034, I'm estimating. Will there be Yuri? The most unrealistic part of the show is that this scene never happens in it. Yes. What else to look for? Oh, you want more details? Okay, it's not a Yuri show exactly but it is fairly goggle friendly. I wouldn't call it a selling point but there are plenty of moments I believe will make you gleeful. The character Chiaki certainly has some tsundere traits towards her fellow Yatch Club members and particularly towards Captain Marika, which I am definitely Pirate Shipping. In addition to that, there's a real actual yuri couple! No, really, they kiss! We see it! It's not ambiguous for once, there's an actual relationship between girls. It's also about the only relationship that is confirmed in the show. There's actually just not a lot of time for these kind of things, because you see, it's time . . . for some piracy! What else to look for? 1.) Quality! From the animation to the sound effects, music, the OP and multiple EDs, Mouretsu Pirates is well crafted and it shows. The results are nothing less than slick. 2.) Early in episode 17, in a conversation Marika calls someone "Senpai". The way she says it, I could listen to on loop for days. 3.) A very large hospital robe, a beanie baby collection, multiple personalities, incredibly vague predictions and a bombshell. Scavenger hunt! So that's this January's Spotlight Show. Use this thread to talk about Mouretsu Pirates (Bodacious Space Pirates) if you wish. It seems like last month's thread had a pretty good flow develop in it, so we're going to take the same approach here. Tell us if you're going to watch the show this month, tell us how you intend to go about watching it and keep us updated as you progress, being mindful of using spoiler tags for people who aren't where you are yet. A good example is I just finished episode 17 here are my thoughts I can't believe ___ ___ ____! Mind=Blown I'd love to see your favorite promo, fan art and videos for the show. Most importantly, have fun with watching with your fellow members! Have suggestions about the Spotlight threads or what shows should be featured in the future? PM me or send me a message on my wall. In fact, when I picked it up the first time, I actually believed it was going to be "so bad it's good" because the concept and title seemed so stupid at the time. Pleasantly surprised how good it ended up. |

So I just saw the episode 11. Dat golden ship. I want one! =o I have to say Mouretsu pirates has that great scifi feel. As a scifi fan I just love it. Those FTL jump scenes remind me of Battlestar Galactica which is the greatest western scifi series of all time. ;) |

And I really get laugh at shoot scene at cafe - little armageddon :P oh... and THAT dessert :D and also this anime broke one important anime rule! Main characters don't sit near window! (also found this funny pic xD) |

@Juffe, the original Battlestar Galactica from the 70s/80s or the new Battlestar Galactica? ;) I am going to go with the show feels sort of like classic Star Trek, instead of Captain Kirk we have Captain Marika. They both are really cool and get all the ladies… Re-watching and looking forward to finding things I didn’t see the first time. Let’s go get some Bodacious Space Pirate booty… Yes, I went there… ;) |

I was Mato from Black Rock Shooter, Aoi from Coppelion, Manaka from Nagi no Asukara, Kuroneko from Oreimo :P (not mention Psycho pass and Steins;Gate) She's everywhere these days. Don't get me wrong, I like her voice, but there was a period of a few months where she was in about nearly every anime I watched that time, not on purpose. I needed a little break from her voice, it started to get really annoying. If I recall correctly, this was the only time I had a bigger problem with what was happening in this anime. Unless I missed something completely obvious, spacewalking doesn't work like that. I know it's just an anime, but it was still bugging me, since they seem to pay attention to these kind of details in Mouretsu Pirates. They managed to do it right in Cowboy Bebop, so why not here? :( |

Even from an aesthetics point of view, I'm not sure why they did it that way. |

I mentioned in the OP that I really love the music of the show. I think the OP and main ED are very exciting and really pump me up for some Space Piracy. Also of note, are two alternate EDs used during the end of Arcs that I really like, Black Holy and "Toumei na Yozora ~Mabataku Hoshi no Tsutsumarete~" Both are sung by Mikako Komatsu, the voice of Marika. While I obviously can't give any direct links, I can say that the single for Black Holy includes both songs and instrumental versions of both. The instrumentals are really neat to listen to, as both pieces sound slightly more different than you'd expect just from not having vocals. I guess that might be a testament to how much her vocals do for the songs but they're still a nice, unique listen without them. |

Shows like Mouretsu, that aren't Yuri genre shows, but have the elements that Yuri fans would like and have goggle friendly pairings will probably be fairly common. It's a balance to find the right show in the club's interest and something people haven't watched to death already (something like Yuru Yuri), of course, not everyone will get something new every month or something they would like. Saki was the perfect "it's really Yuri but a lot of people haven't watched it" show but beyond that . . . In an any case, what I meant to say was, I'm very impressed that this show has picked up 12 new viewers (now surpassing Saki) in just a few days of posting this and would be pleasantly surprised if the overall viewers (or voters at least) was higher in total this month (certainly on pace to be). And to those who are voting, don't be shy, come join the fun. |

Just started this today. It's interesting but I have hard time getting into story-driven shows, so it will take me a few episodes to really appreciate what is going on. Episode 1: First things first! Character art! This jumped at me being really cute right away. I like it so far. Kinda nice to see a futuristic setting that isn't TOO futuristic. This girls voice. Yes. Not sure how big of a deal Marika is supposed to be, but she seems important. Episode 2: I dislike weapons and especially futuristic ones, but if firing them is as rare as it was said in the show I can look past them. I think I will like this girl! Yeah, probably. Momoiro Clover Z everywhere. I like the OP but I am still undecided on the ED. |

Momoiro Clover Z everywhere. I like the OP but I am still undecided on the ED. The story is a bit slow in the early goings but it's at least easy to follow. The deepest story is probably the second arc but once you get past that, it's two lighter arcs with cute pirates doing cute things. Weapon use isn't very common. Pretty much the only thing that ever really gets hit is ships from the ship cannons. It's mostly warning shot stuff. A warning spoiler for episode 6 if you want to read A character does get shot in the heart. But it's blood pack and a fake gun, done for the showmanship I mentioned earlier, complete with "Oh no, I'm dead! DX blahh" bad acting. That's about as graphic as the show ever gets. Edit: Oh, and Mami rocks. |

It's a slower paced show in general but the first arc is probably the the slowest. It didn't catch on with me fully the first time around until the later episodes. I think too, if you can watch at least a couple episodes at a time you might get more into it, since episodes are often starting right where the last began. |

Episode 5 At last some action ^^ Clever idea with sunbeams ^^ Conversation about "idiot high school girls" was hilarious! As idiot president of the yacht club, maybe I should send half-awake answer. Episode 6 This bureaucracy remember me my country when you need walk from one agency's window to another to accomplish 1 thing because "they don't do this here, you must go there" and it's not sure if you really get this thing xD I really don't know why tranlators (in my language) tranlate Chiaki-chan to something similar to nee-chan... Why they don't put just Chiaki like in english subs xD (strange people...) Maybe I will continue watching with eng subs :P Marika's "ghahahaha" was fabulous. And now some screens :D First of all I really like this scenery And this cuuute tsundere blush At this picture we can see that Chiaki is very worried about Marika. But you know what? I think this is true version! |

Man, my neck hurts. Hope I made it by the deadline. Same with the last spotlight, I have marathon'd the whole second half of the series in one sitting. I hope this doesn't turn into a habit. Anyways, here's my wall of text: Fun show. Not much yuri, but it was enjoyable. I don't regret picking it up. I don't usually watch much sci-fi stuff so it was fresh. The cast was entertaining, in particular the yacht club and the Bentenmaru crew. The whole golden ship arc was a low point for me though. I just didn't find the royal family stuff interesting, the princess and her sister were pretty boring to me as well. I found myself thinking 'Why is this chick getting so much screentime instead of Chiaki or...well, pretty much any other character?'. The Jenny x Lynne stuff was nice though. Not that often you see a straight-out canon yuri scene like that in an anime that doesn't cater specifically to yuri. I feel it had a nice balance between action and light hearted fun. I liked the final battle a lot. Nice to see the big bad get completely wrecked for once. Mami was a pretty funny character, her voice sorta grated on me after a while. A lot of the characters didn't get much development, then again that'd be pretty hard to deal with considering the limited time and huge cast. Kinda sad how that one newbie chick got a whole episode to herself in that yacht race while a lot of the longstanding supporting characters got absolutely nothing. There should've been more Chiaki/Marika scenes. It sorta seemed like Chiaki just disappeared for long periods of time even though she should be the second main character. Schnitzer= moe. Good show, good show. Though as was mentioned earlier, it didn't really seem like a super yuri friendly show. This is coming from a guy who watches mostly subtext heavy yuri anime. I can get why you wouldn't pick stuff that everyone's probably seen like YRYR but maybe next should be something with a bit more...punch? Weight? Some term or another. Something like Saki I guess. |

It's grown on me in subsequent watches to the point that I enjoy it but it's still my least favorite of the major arcs. I just didn't find the royal family stuff interesting, the princess and her sister were pretty boring to me as well. I found myself thinking 'Why is this chick getting so much screentime instead of Chiaki or...well, pretty much any other character?'. There's a weird curve in the show where the more Chiaki there is, the less Gruier and vice versa, with the Yacht Club arc managing to balance both. The Jenny x Lynne stuff was nice though. Not that often you see a straight-out canon yuri scene like that in an anime that doesn't cater specifically to yuri. Agreed. I feel it had a nice balance between action and light hearted fun. I liked the final battle a lot. Nice to see the big bad get completely wrecked for once. That's actually an interesting point, I plan to talk about it when I finally get around to watching. It sorta seemed like Chiaki just disappeared for long periods of time even though she should be the second main character. I'm all for that. Schnitzer= moe. They updated his appearance for the movie. Military Jacket and Turtleneck Sweater Combo. Very Classy. Cure_Inazuma said: Good show, good show. Though as was mentioned earlier, it didn't really seem like a super yuri friendly show. I disagree that it isn't Yuri friendly. I agree the subtext isn't particularly heavy and I said from the start it isn't a Yuri show but I think it has the elements of a show that members of the club would like. I would say Mouretsu Pirates is pretty much super female everything friendly and girl x girl relationships and shippings are amongst the things that get their equal due. The thing about Saki is, that's pretty much it, there are no other Saki shows. The extent of the Yuri, combined with relative obscurity and the exceptional quality of it makes it a treasure. That's why I went with it first. Everything else from here on will either be two of the three or just not something that can hit all three cylinders the same way Saki could. (btw, there's no REAL deadline and this month's been extended by a week so that I can work on the next competition.) |

Opening Arc (Episodes 1-5) Admittedly, the show doesn't get off to the fastest start but I think it does a good job of establishing the mood, a lot of characters and concepts. Marika's mom, Ririka, is great and I like the dynamic between them. She obviously respects Marika's decision making and is very supportive of her. They come off more as best-friends or sisters and I don't know how represented that kind of mother daughter relationship is in Anime or Japan even but it's not one that I would call too uncommon in my parts of the world. The Yacht Club practice cruise probably goes on for almost one episode too long. Some of the dilly-dallying in Episode 4 is the biggest candidate for things that could have been cut but it finishes quite strong, the second half of episode 5 is good edge of your seat stuff and the sun beam is a moment where you feel Marika really does have something in her. This is some cool magazine technology. Cool cars, new and old. Beer taste best from cans made of gold. Everytime I see this scene, I always think for a second he's not wearing pants. Marika is the world's worst Jenga player. (By my count, that stack is less than the regulatory height of a NEW game) Two episodes in, already in sync. (hmph) Lily is a Perv. (She already has the bra, what's she after now?) |

Finally started this spotlight, really late… procrastinated then became to busy. Re-watched the first 5 episodes. I really enjoyed the battle with the attacking ship on the Yacht Club ship. This arc clearly shows Marika’s aptitude with leading. My favorite part was watching her be able to assess a situation and create a plan of action to handle the situation. What can I say, I really think the creators are Star Trek fans, yes. :) |

Pretty much, if not a little understated. Even if I wasn't familiar with the series, I think I'd want this. Just too awesome for one figure. |

Re-watched the episodes 6-13. I dub these episodes the princess in search of ghost ship arc. How will Marika save the day? You have to watch… I will tell you there were a few cool moments. Chiaki as a pirate, the answer to the question is yes, I mean no, yes. :) Marika as a pirate, yes ma’am. A couple of awesome space ships, Golden Ghost and Bentamaru. Docking time. Did you know the Letter of Marque is a real document for legal piracy. This is sexy. |

First Days of Work (Episodes 6 & 7) I love how in the middle of Marika's training, for all the important captain stuff she has to do, one of those things is building Bentenmaru models for Sandaime. One of the weirder things is her pirate appearance in episode 7, where she's got this glam rock look going on. I won't comment if it's better or worse than her normal look, just that it's odd that she does it this time and not again for the rest of the show. There's this weird piece of decor in the Lamp House, this giant pink piggy bank that sticks out like a sore thumb. Keep your eye out for this thing because it seems like there's ALWAYS someone polishing this thing. The Golden Ghost Ship (Episodes 8-12) This is probably my least favorite part of the show. Now, that's kind of like saying "bacon" is the least favorite thing I put on my pizza. I still want a ton of it on there. Each time I've rewatched this arc though, I think I've liked it more and more. These two characters, be it in the movie or in a second season, could really use some more air time. I love them conceptually, the meager servants who double as legitimately dangerous weapons if need be and from an artistic stand point, in that I believe it from both of them. This little pea-shooter clearly isn't going to be enough. Chiaki, the bowing tsundere. Mami, the creeper. This arc also has me questioning something, I've never been able to figure out if Ririka was a captain? She dressed like one and seemingly did the duties of one but I don't think they ever out right say she is and there's some problems inherent if she is. For one, what are the odds Marika's parents would be both be qualified by lineage to be captain? Or can you marry into this gig? Then again Chiaki and Marika can both be captains and they're going to have children together too, so maybe it's not so unlikely. There's an 8 hour a day limit for how long students can work. Doesn't really sound like much of a limit. Chiaki, run away with me! Magical Pirate Girl Marika Transform! (Took me 4 years to splice this together and another 2 years to find somewhere that would let me host it) These are cool http://s28.postimg.org/k48qzierx/Screenshot_206.png http://s28.postimg.org/xoziymukt/Screenshot_207.png There's a great little attention to detail in episode 11, where the Bentenmaru's power has just come back on and Risa is forced to manually open a door with a hand crank. Blink and you'll miss it. Love the virtual letter, can't see the point of it, but love it. We got smacked in the butt! "Here's the situation, the giant blender has this 3 prong cable but the giant outlet is only 2 prong. Do you have a giant 3-to-2 prong adapter on you?" If that joke doesn't work outside of the States, just humor me and pretend it does. These dual tennis racket things that let them float around are pretty cool but I do have one question, why aren't they always using them outside the ship? The story as it's revealed is fairly interesting. The combination of future incubation technology and genetic based royalty is a neat concept that I think could be explored in a whole separate story. The actual reasoning behind Gruier wanting to get here is a bit of a let down, kind of silly and the resolution isn't really too satisfying. I love Grunhilde's regal look. Sadly, her introduction arc is probably the peak of her as a character. This is the arc uses the Black Holy ED a couple times and episode 12 is my favorite mix of it. Just really neat how the music syncs to the FTL jump and how the instruments go out but the vocals stay in as it fades to white. |
