Welcome to the first I<3Y&SA Monthly Spotlight Show. Each month a new entry added to encourage members of this club to discover a show they haven't seen, to rewatch an old favorite or to give one a second chance. The shows may be Yuri (implied or explicit), Shoujo Ai or even shows that don't quite qualify for either of those, but we feel our members would like. This December of 2013, the Spotlight is on Saki! What is it? Saki is a show about a school Mahjong club, training and competing to become the best. It features a very girl rich cast, from major to minor characters. It's a funny, intense and heartwarming ride that never lets up. Why should I watch it? If the prospect of watching a show about a game you don't understand (it's not that game that comes with Windows Vista) doesn't sound that exciting, allow me to assure you that this show's depiction of a game of Mahjong is akin to how an episode of Pokemon depicts a battle compared to watching someone playing with their Pokemon trading cards. There's hidden powers, crazy animations and edge of your seat drama accompanied with every match. Games are a thrill from start to finish and not really understanding what's going on will be on the back of your mind. More points = better, there's your lesson. But the Mahjong is just one aspect of the show and not even the most important. As I mentioned before, Saki has a girl rich cast. What I didn't mention was that this cast is both very large and nearly flawless. While the show is focused on one club of five girls (and some guy), it manages to maintain your interest in several other all girl clubs, each with 5 unique characters a piece and not one of them too similar to another. There are so many girls in this show and even the most minor of them manage to get their time to shine and be memorable. I genuinely believe it's impossible to pick just one favorite from this show. In the latter portions of the story, you even start to see more and more unique powers and skills these girls possess that will always keep you guessing at what's next. Saki also keeps a strong pace throughout. In 25 episodes, you'll get introductions, drama, friendship forming, bonding, lots of training, pinky swears, more drama, two tournaments and still plenty of time for hotsprings and festivals, while never spending too much time in any one area. Finally, you should watch it because it's really good and because next month, you can jump right into season 2. Unlike the people who watched it the first time around, who had to wait 5 years :o Will there be Yuri? Some would describe Saki as a show with strong Yuri implications and recommend you to bring your Yuri Goggles. I wouldn't and I say keep your Yuri Goggles in the Yuri Goggles Bag. That's because Saki IS Yuri. Now, Saki might not be a show about girls making out with each other but Nodoka and Saki's "that way" interest for each other is so clear, that not only should there be no need for Yuri Goggles but I think it would take Yuri Visors not to see it. The highs and lows of their relationship might not always involve romantic interest but their mutual growth is the most important part of the show, even more so than Mahjong. If either of these characters were male, nobody would even question that there is clear chemistry and yes, some lusting for each other. It doesn't stop there either, there's plenty of pairings amongst the cast throughout, including one that is outright confirmed as confirmed can be in the sister show, Episode of Side-A. Behold, your new moe overlords. What else to look for? 1.) The main ending animation for the first half of the show is the most pleasant thing ever. If you can watch it without smiling, congratulations, you are Satan. Wai Wai! 2.) Wahaha! That's not a laugh, I'm just making clever observation using the greatest sound ever. 3.) You might learn something about Mahjong? Probably not. So that's this December's Spotlight Show. Use this thread to talk about Saki if you wish. Since this is the first spotlight we've had, I'm not really sure how we should approach this thread, since I want it to be for people watching for the first time and for people wanting to rewatch it. How about we play it cautiously and mindful of using spoiler tags for major things now. I'd love to see your favorite promo, fan art and videos for the show. Have suggestions about the Spotlight threads or what shows should be featured in the future? PM me or send me a message on my wall. |

My friend has been recommending me to watch this since he first watched it. I might pick this up, maybe even as soon as today or tomorrow since I seem to have some free time coming up. Pretty good timing to remind me of this as I was just thinking about what to start watching next.w Just the yuri parts of Saki should be enough to keep me interested but I've heard it's pretty good overall. I have played mahjong myself so I know most of the rules, maybe not advanced stuff though. So following along with the mahjong parts shouldn't be too much of a problem for me. In any case, signing up for this as a first time watcher! I like the idea of a monthly show in here, I have a tendency to save yuri shows for later so I need some kind of a push to start watching them. I'm afraid I might keep pushing them in front of me forever otherwise... I think keeping it to yuri/shoujo-ai might be a good thing for this club. Maybe not as main genre, but maybe if there is some implications etc. Maybe I'm just bad at noticing but there wasn't a link to the MAL-page in the first post, here it is for anyone interested: http://myanimelist.net/anime/5671/Saki The side-stories/sequels: http://myanimelist.net/anime/7759/Saki_Picture_Drama http://myanimelist.net/anime/16123/Saki:_Zenkoku-hen (not yet aired) http://myanimelist.net/anime/10884/Saki:_Achiga-hen_-_Episode_of_Side-A http://myanimelist.net/anime/15989/Saki:_Achiga-hen_-_Episode_of_Side-A_Specials |

MrScwiggles said: you forgot to mention ALL of the yuri doujinshi that has been made about this series Well, the focus of starting the thread was and will always be the anime. But yes, you're right, there is a lot of good Saki doujin out there. Xinisterad said: Whoa! Nice thread, will watch. Great! Glad to have you on board. Yes, I forgot to link to the MAL page, that's embarrassing. 2.) Glad you got something to push you into shows. 3.) I imagine the vast majority of shows on the spotlight will be girl centric and at least some implications. The idea is for what I think a lot of people here would like and that's going to mostly include Yuri/Shoujo Ai, most of the time. There's not going to be an Attack on Titan month or anything. I didn't mention it, I'll edit a notice in, but if anyone has suggestions for the Spotlight in terms of format or suggestions for future shows, PM me or see me at my profile wall. |

lectito said: Normally, I would not pick up this series, but for the club I will. Are we watching this as a club or individually? If I thought I could pull off such an orchestration, and believe me I considered the ways, I would be all about getting everyone to watch it at the same time. But there's just no way. I don't want anyone to feel pressured into watching something they don't want to. It certainly won't make anyone less of a club member for not doing so and there's always the chance that the next month will be a show people who aren't interested in this months, will be (and vice versa). I do think Saki is a very high quality show and even if it's a bit out of your norm, I think most people will appreciate it at the least. So, to give a little more thought into how I thought this thread might work. My idea was that, anyone who was interested in watching or rewatching could pick the show up and watch it on their schedule (some might have already started). The purpose of the thread would be to simply talk about it in any way people wanted to. Tell us that you've decided to watch it. Tell us what kind of schedule you think you'll follow (an episode a day, marathon it all in one sitting, etc). If individual members want to form a small watch group of trying to keep to the same schedule, you could do that too. If people want to keep us updated while they watch, tell us about something they really liked in an episode they just saw (with spoiler tag, of course), that's also encouraged. Basically, watch and anything that's on your mind in regards to the show and watching it, feel free to to say so here. And if people want to respond to all of these things, do that too. Mingle, socialize, make new friends, celebrate a quality show together. Sort of a party atmosphere, if you will. Something to bring the club closer in common ground beyond just ♥ing Yuri &Shoujo Ai. I'm trying not to set too many guidelines or specifics because I want to try to let things evolve naturally and maybe we'll be able to set a tone that will carry over into the next month and the next month. |

i believe this is just an awareness campaign to get more people to watch and chat about a show, or to help push those who were originally planning to watch the show to make them watch it sooner, or to prompted new members to watch a show |

MrScwiggles said: i believe this is just an awareness campaign to get more people to watch and chat about a show, or to help push those who were originally planning to watch the show to make them watch it sooner, or to prompted new members to watch a show Yes and no. Yes, it is a bit of an awareness campaign but no, I'm hoping it won't be "just" that. It's sort of like in the past, when we would all get to talking about a specific show on the main club page. People who have seen it would talk about how good it is, people who haven't might pick it up. Just, instead of being entirely spontaneous, the show is picked out and instead of being in the comments section, it's got its own focused thread. |

I'm now on 5th ep. and you're right. You don't need Yuri Goggles :D I'm watching this with subtitles in my native language (but there are only to 12th xD) so thanks to it I can better understand what they talkinkg about Mahjong BUT even it's in my language I don't really get these rules so I watching this and believe them on word that they're are winning/loosing/being on critical situation xD I really like Hisa - she's great! |

Oh I definitely love this. I finished ep 2 but I'm gonna take a break for now and maybe do some kind of watchathon later tonight. About the show so far: I like how the (very small) drama is quickly resolved and turned into something nice. I don't deal with it very well, I just wanna see girls being happy. Seems like the mahjong is gonna take off more seriously from now on. I still really love the chars, they're just amazing haha. I forgot to ask this earlier, is Achiga-hen part of this or just the first season? |

I'm curious as to how many of these spotlights will interest me, seeing how much I have backlogged already =P Saki is incredibly entertaining, but not worth a rewatch for me. But I'll surely be enjoying reading everyone's reactions ^^ |

I forgot to ask this earlier, is Achiga-hen part of this or just the first season? Achiga is a side story about another school who are also competing to go to the nationals. It takes place over a large period of time, including before this show but most of it takes place AFTER Saki. Most major Saki characters make at least cameos and it leads up to Saki S2 but it's mostly a story about characters that will be considered secondary in Saki S2. It's also got some serious pacing problems that Saki didn't have. I recommend it if you just need more Saki but with the caution that it's only supplemental and not the real Saki experience. Yea, I was curious to see if the direction would be similar to a book club format, where people watch/complete a show/episode(s) then discuss (except without delicious food or drink). I understand, it makes sense to keep a free form environment where people can come and go as they please with the discussions. It would be hard to have a set schedule with the different time zones and schedules of each person. Sweet, jumping in and enjoying the saccharine filled ride. Just finished the first episode and all I can say is fluffy warm KAWAINESSNESSNESS, using some of the wise words of MrScwiggles. Working on the second. Jeez, at least offer the lovely lady a little bit of the umbrella, before running off to pout. |

I just finished 19 ep ^^ When Saki was losing first half I just waiting for time break because it was obvious that Nadoka will cheer her up. And it was soooo cuuuute! But when they hug it was much more kawaii! Ohh it's so damn moe! I don't get this mahjong at all but this anime has something in it... I can't stop watching it. And some funny stuff. When they play - you know, when are these "animations"/special effect/etc. on board it's reminds me... Jumanji :D floating water, mahjong's stones are like electric fence... It has one big disadvantage... I'm watching this too fast xD so propably I will start reading manga. Can someone tell me is anime differ from manga or it is accurate adaptation? So I could skip some volumes and start reading after action from anime? |

Nice idea, specially with Saki. I don't remember why I watched it the first time (I think I didn't know about it being yuri-stuff) but I loved it immediatly. I have my problems with Saki herself, but other than that I think the characters are fantastic (Hisa and Mihoko are my favorites), specially the treatment of the other schools was very nice (everyone got his time to shine). The matches are also very cool and the music catchy as hell. I will be rewatching it without a doubt, probably before Season 2. The Achiga-Series was also nice, but way too rushed and because of that significantly weaker but also quite enjoyable. |

The manga is pretty close to the anime from what I know but the anime actually has more arcs in it because it got through the source material quicker than it was coming out. The singles competition for example, is not in the manga. The manga is ahead now but I wouldn't jump into yet, with the second season coming out next month, which I believe will likely conclude the story (I think anyway). lectito said: Episode 3, completed. Hisa and Mihoko are both incredible and it's hard to pick one or the other as a favorite. I've been alternating them recently. I'd like to just smoosh them together and make one super character. Re:Achiga Too rushed in the first 8 episodes before it comes to the grinding stop to end all grinding stops in Anime with the second 8 episodes. I don't know what they thought they were rushing to but stretching out that last match to half the series was one of the most brutal things I've ever endured in watching anime. Inexcusable pacing that really hurt the show. Characters are fortunately able to redeem it but I hope it's not indicative of how season 2 will be handled. |

I don't know how to play Rummy either. Watching the show did remind me of my TCG days. Going to tournaments, meeting lots of people, the thrill of winning a tough game, using magical powers to gain unfair advantages over mortals. Those pics remind me. Anyone who has seen up to episode 19, check out this page and the next 2 pages of a Saki doujin for a twist on a scene and a joke about the Saki universe attire. Finally, for anyone finished with the show and looking to get a little more Saki Fans of Hisa x Mihoko particularly, just know there is endless quality of fan art for this pairing out there. It even has it's own fanclub here on MAL that has a lot of good pictures and stuff to check out. |

Mahjong is a very fun game to play. If you ever get the chance to play with real mahjong tiles I recommend it, learning the rules will take a while however.. I'm sure there is a possibility to play it online though. As of ep 4: The yuri is very clear now, made me a little warm inside watching. Also mahjong happened. I hope the infamous Koromo gets some spotlight soon! |

There are plenty of Mahjong games for smartphones, some of which are translated to Engrish. After Saki I learned the basic rules and played for a bit, but I'm too lazy to learn the points system in depth, still don't even know what gives a han and what doesn't =S But after Chihayafuru I always want to play karuta, so it's not so much about the game of mahjong but more about the series xD When it comes to board games I prefer chess, but I like video games better anyways. |

I don't know why people ship her with Hisa (only because they met someday? please... and also IMO Kazekoshi Girls' High School is the most pallid school. On a related note, I intend to start rewatching and hopefully finishing this week. Any one is welcome to join me as I highlight my favorite moments. |

Alright. Finished. As expected, I didn't understand what the hell was going on during the mahjong, but it was still enjoyable. Definitely worth the watch. Two things that really hurt it for me were the constant fanservice shots and Yuuki. God, I hated Yuuki. I ended up liking pretty much everyone from the other schools more than the main girls from Kiyosumi. Specifically Tsuruga. Liked Kanbara, even though she didn't get much(read: any) characterization, and stealth Momo in particular. Team tournament was great, though since it lasted so long the individual tournament seemed rushed. That new chick who wrecked in the south round got all built up to seem important but ended up being pretty insignificant. Glad they brought up the whole surname thing with Saki and Nodoka at the end, that was killing me throughout the series. I came for yuri and wasn't disappointed. Last thing is that they made me look forward to the MihokoxKana then Pixiv only has HisaxMihoko (Not the anime's fault, but damn you pixiv). I probably won't watch Achiga-hen, but I will watch Season 2. Thanks for putting it in the spotlight(guess you could say it was the 'light' choice). Lookin' forward to the next one. |

Kanbara: Wahaha > Characterization. The individual tournament isn't in the manga, so there wasn't a whole lot they could do with it unfortunately. As I said earlier in the thread the worst thing about HanaxMihoko (which I do prefer) is that it wrecks two other ships. Glad you enjoyed it. You should be fine, I think, without watching Achiga-hen. Although, I do see the new picture for season two has the main girl from Achiga-hen on it. Edit: Not that it shouldn't be expected she would be in it, I just don't have an idea of how much story will cover that team and reference their side story. |

Just finished Saki. Yay. It almost feels like I just won a game of Mahjong. So, I enjoyed the first part of the season with the team play. It felt a lot more coherent and well thought out, the second portion of the show with the individual play and festival/bath scenes felt as if it were filling space. But, I did enjoy the bath scenes, ping pong battle and the fall/hug between Saki and Haramura at the festival. :) I would have to say one of my favorite pairings would be YumixMomoko. The main question is who will be sleeping with Haramura tonight? Will it be the Penguin or Saki? You decide. Good series overall, will definitely watch the second season. edit: I Fixed your urls. |

Seems to be a growing consensus. Yes, the single tournament wasn't in the Manga so there wasn't a whole lot they could do as far as characterization. The show blew through the material that was out at the time (the team tournament was just ending when the show finished). YumixMomo I posted a few post up, There's also a lot of Saki Doujin. A lot of it is MihokoxHisa but a lot of their books have second stories about YumixMomo. http://dynasty-scans.com/search?q=yumi+x+momo Glad you enjoyed it. |
