Title - Letters From Iwo Jima
Director - Clint Eastwood
Year of Release - 2006
Duration - 141 minutes
IMDb - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0498380/

Synopsis
The island of Iwo Jima stands between the American military force and the home islands of Japan. Therefore the Imperial Japanese Army is desperate to prevent it from falling into American hands and providing a launching point for an invasion of Japan. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi is given command of the forces on the island and sets out to prepare for the imminent attack. General Kuribayashi, however, does not favor the rigid traditional approach recommended by his subordinates, and resentment and resistance fester among his staff. In the lower echelons, a young soldier, Saigo, a poor baker in civilian life, strives with his friends to survive the harsh regime of the Japanese army itself, all the while knowing that a fierce battle looms. When the American invasion begins, both Kuribayashi and Saigo find strength, honor, courage, and horrors beyond imagination.

The film is available in full with English subtitles on filenuke and is widely available on DVD.

i love this film its one of Eastwood's better attempts at directing, as for the acting like you said its lead by the great ken Watanabe but i think Tsuyoshi Ihara portrayal of Takeichi Nishi was some of the best acting in the film. altogether this film is brilliant it manged to succeed where flags of our fathers didn't, its an amazing film that has a lot of emotion it' a must watch for any one

I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking "did he fire six shots or only five?" Now to tell you the truth I forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow you head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

I saw this two years ago. Such a good movie. Does anyone know how the reception was in USA and Japan?

Many of the top Critics States side seem to like it. Metacritic.com

However it appears to have flopped at the box office and overall sales States side. In Japan it looks like it did a lot better both in the opening weekend and overall sales. IMDB figures.

I saw the movie some years ago.

In this movie, Japanese soldiers are portrayed as reluctant to fight, forced to fight and would like to surrender. The Japanese side seem to lack determination, resolve and spirit. Not very accurate but better than those Chinese propaganda films which portrays Japanese soldiers as cold-blooded inhuman monsters.
