-American McGee's Alice -EA/Rouge Entertainment -Shortly after her second adventure, Alice's house is burned down by a fire, killing her parents, and leaving her as the only survivor. Because of the guilt, she tries to commit suicide (bandages can be seen on her wrists), and becomes catatonic. She is institutionalised in Rutledge Asylum. Years later, the White Rabbit summons Alice to aid a radically altered Wonderland, now under the despotic rule of the Queen of Hearts. The Cheshire Cat in particular now looks very different from Sir John Tenniel's original illustration: he is shown here as skeletally thin and his grin looks more devious than mischievous. When he first appears in the game, Alice comments, "You've gone quite mangy, cat, but your grin's a comfort." The cat serves as Alice's constant companion throughout the game, frequently appearing to guide her.[wiki] -PC, Mac -read the storyXD The Cat, Demons, and Alice(with an inner demon. What kind? See yourself;]) |

Game: Killer 7 Publisher and Developer-team: * Director: Suda51 * Producers: Shinji Mikami, Hiroyuki Kobayashi * Writer: Suda51 * Music Director: Masafumi Takada * Publisher: Capcom * Developer: Grasshopper Manufacture Story: The spoiler tag actually has *some* spoilers in it but also used because of it's length. In the near future, the Japanese United Nations Party is attempting to unify the world under Japanese control. To that end, Garcian Smith is asked by Christopher Mills, an agent of the United States to assassinate a number of targets that are working with the Party to prevent this from occurring. As Garcian and the Killer7 attempt these tasks, they find that their efforts are interfered with a mutant terrorist group known as "Heaven Smile"; the members have been converted by Kun Lan using his "God Hand" into living bombs. One of the last missions takes the Killer7 to Coburn Elementary School near Seattle, Washington. While exploring the school, the Killer7 discover tapes that reveal that the school was a front for the Japanese United Nations Party to train young children to become assassins. One such child, Emir Parkreiner, was mentored by Harman Smith and stood out from the others, but his fate is unknown. Clues at the school point to a shooting massacre several years earlier at the Union Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the hotel Garcian discovers that all of the Killer7 personas were victims of the massacre, all killed by Emir, save for Garcian; Garcian's persona is actually that of Emir's, who committed suicide after realizing he had shot his mentor, Harman. Emir reincarnated as Harman, Garcian, and the other Killer7 personalities, but had forgotten his past, and relearns of the painful truth in the present. Three years later, Garcian arrives at Battleship Island in Japan to put an end to Heaven Smile and to ease tensions between Japan and the rest of the world. He meets with Kenjiro Matsuoka, president of the Japanese United Nations Party, and insists Garcian make a choice: keep Kenjiro alive, which will allow Japan to rally underneath him for an assault on the United States, or kill him, which will lead to the United States discovering their elections have been rigged by Japan, and will lead to Japan being destroyed. Regardless of the choice the player makes, Garcian will discover that the last Heaven Smile is nearby, and gives chase. Garcian kills the smile to discover it is Kun Lan himself, ending the threat of the Heaven Smile. The game concludes a century in the future in Shanghai as Harman and Kun face off once again. Shinji Mikami has been quoted saying, "Me and Goichi Suda (the writer) are fond of plotlines that are 'open-ended,' and what I mean by that is, when you first play the game you will think, 'What just happened???' and it's not until you watch it all again that you say, 'Oh, he was talking about this thing or event here, or he was referring to that person' and it's not until then that the plot starts to make sense. These are very complex, very involving stories that you do not usually see in video games these days."[wiki] Console: Gamecube, PS2 Mindfuck reason: Crazy-ass story line. So many plot twists. In order to understand the game and plot ou'll have to watch pretty much ever cut scene. Honestly this is the biggest mind fuck game I've EVER played. A lot of people can agree with me on that. These are the same people who made no more heroes which was way more famous and relatively easier than killer 7. |

2nd that vote for Killer7, one of my favorite obscure Capcom games. Silent Hill (series) PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360 Konami It's not just horrifying, it's completely nuts. You can never really tell if what's happening to the character is real or just a dream. |

Name: Folklore Publisher/Game Developer: Game Republic, SCEI Story: (partially ripped from wiki) A young university student named Ellen's mind is a total blank slate when it comes to her past, the only thing that she remembers faintly is her mother. One day she is lured to the sea-side village of Doolin, in Ireland, led by a letter from her supposedly dead mother, telling her to meet her at the Cliff of Sidhe, Doolin. Meanwhile Keats, a journalist from an occult magazine called Unknown Realms, receives a telephone call from a woman in distress telling him to come to Doolin, and crying about Faerys who would kill her. Though he suspects it is a prank call, he pays a visit to Doolin Village. When Ellen arrives at the Cliff of Sidhe, she sees a cloaked figure resting at the edge. Thinking it is her mother, she calls out to the figure, but it does not reply. Keats arrives on the scene then, and asks Ellen if she was the one who called him. When she, surprised, says no, he wonders aloud if the figure at the cliff was the one who called him. A strong gust of wind suddenly blows across the cliff, and when it dies down, the figure has disappeared. That night, they are both visited by strange voices who invite them to the village pub, where they meet creatures they had never before thought existed, and are taken to a place that surpasses all imagination: the Netherworld, realm of the dead. Soon Keats and Ellen find themselves in a 17-year-old murder mystery, where the answers seem to only be found in the Netherworld, the land that can only be accessed from one place in the world, Doolin. To solve the crime and reveal Ellen's forgotten past, they will need to venture to the Netherworld as travelers, where Faerys and Folks alike await them. Console: PS3 Mindfuckery? The game plays about layers of reality and about people's fantasies and perceptions. The whole mystery around Ellen's life is very mind-fucking, and like any good mystery, the plot takes you through a circle. I recomend definetely for all those who love good graphics, characters, and fantasy monsters. |

- The Suffering - Midway/Surreal Software - You animate Torque, inmate said to have killed his own wife and two sons. Action takes place in a really fucked up prison, some monsters you encounter e.g. have blades instead of legs and arms, sometimes you shoot few years old girls, than explode with fire and flames. And Torque himself carries the biggest monster, he just doesn't know that yet... - PC, XBox, PS2 - Firstly-it just is. Its first FPS/TPS with such influential moral choices system, three different endings and so on. Secondly-it's legally for free;] http://www.gamershell.com/news_60914.html |

Bioshock 2K Games Xbox360 and PS3 I'm surprised no one mentioned Bioshock. The twist towards the end of the game totally makes the whole thing mind-fucky. Besides that, with all of the crazy splicers wandering the streets of Rapture, the music that ties into the mood, and trippy powers, it needs to be on this list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioshock Condemned 1 & 2 Monolith Productions Xbox360 and PS3 Besides solving twisted murders with gadgets, the lead Ethan Thomas also has to deal with his own Alcohol Demon, all sorts of deranged drug users, and the mysterious Oro. I don't want to spoil the game for any of you who haven't played it, but if you're curious, check out the links below (particularly the link to its sequel, Bloodshot). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condemned:_Criminal_Origins http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condemned_2:_Bloodshot |

Bioshock is one of my favorite games, though at first it was mainly because of the parallels I saw with fallout. It is definitely a great mind fuck game, almost more a work of art than a game. Condemned is pretty intense, but you move a little too slow at times. I guess that adds to the thrill, like you're always left with your own thoughts |

- name of the game : Eternal Darkness - publisher and developer-team: Nintendo, Silicon Knights - story: You play a character investigating the murder of her guardian. This leads into a cuthullu-esque storyline as she attempts to unravel the truth. - on which console: Gamecube (playble on the Wii) - why is it mindfuck?: Most of the game 'isn't really happening', as 90% of it is about the main character reading a book. As such, you see scenes, and then see those scenes from different perspectives, and other stuff. You'll find yourself reacting to stuff that isn't there (has no reason to be there, it's your own instincts failing you) and the sanity effects (if you don't know about them ahead of time) are really immerseive. In fact, they're so immersive that, if you don't know they're coming, you'll start to suspect that YOU are going insane as your character does. (And anyone watching you and not the game will be certain you've gone insane.) I really can't tell you much more without spoiling the effect. As much as you play the game, the game has a tendency to play you. - name of the game: Deus Ex (the original) - publisher and developer-team: Eidos, Ion Storm - story: A near future where you play a nanite-enhanced super soldier/spy for UNATCO (a UN military division). - on which console: PC - why is it mindfuck?: For the most part, the game isn't mindfuck, (unless you count that it involves more thinking than almost any first-person shooter ever) However, there's a small number of points where the events of the game make you stop and think real hard, and challenge a number of preconceptions. And if you dig in texts in the game and notice small details, you'll begin to be screwed with more. (As one creepy factor of the game, a decent amount takes place in New York. The New York skyline in the game is missing the twin towers, destroyed by terrorist attack according to the game's history. Not that creepy until you consider the game was released noticeably BEFORE 9/11. In a game that deals with conspiracies and manipulative media, that alone is enough to begin to screw with you.) |

Galerians Crave Entertainment Galerians begins with the protagonist, Rion, awaking in a hospital observation room, unable to remember his identity. He hears a girl's voice calling to him in his mind, begging him to come to her rescue, and he decides to search for her. Using psychokinetic abilities to escape his room, Rion fights hospital security and staff desperately and brutally with his newly discovered psychic powers. He finds that human experiments related to unlocking psychic potential are being conducted in the hospital as part of a grander, more mysterious plan known as the "G Project". Playstation (squeal on PS2) There are three gauges that regulate Rion's status - a health meter that depletes as Rion takes damage, a drug meter that depletes as Rion uses his powers, and the AP meter which counts up when Rion takes damage, uses abilities, or is under stress, similar to a limit break mechanic. When the AP meter is full, Rion loses control of his powers, releasing a continuous psychic assault that will kill non-boss enemies in a single blow. This condition, known as shorting, is fatal to Rion if allowed to go on too long. Similar to the films Network, City of Lost Children, and Akira. |

Fatal Frame series TECMO A girl named Miku Hinasaki visits a mansion to look for her older brother who went missing in there a week before she arrived. As she continues through the mansion she uncovers dark secrets and an evil past. PS2 & Xbox Well it's a lot like silent hill because your dealing with destorted, creepy figures and enclosed spaces, but it's not a neighborhood, it's a mansion area. This is a crazy game. The sound and music alone will fuck with you. What makes it worse is that you need to take pictures of these demented figures in order to kill them, or they'll keep haunting you. This series is argueably the scariest in the history of video games. Many think silent hill is worse, but I personally consider silent hill a walk in the park compared to this. PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360. (depending on the type of console of course.) |

System shock looking glass studios a hacker to escape being jailed for his crimes hacks a super computer name SHODAN to help out the government only to see Shodan turn on the government locking down and taking control over the whole spacestation, you must now try to escape. PC think bioshock in space. (the game came out before it and bioshock is the spiritual successor to the series.) |
Something cool to be placed here in the near future. |

Bump. John DeFoe series Developer: Ben Croshaw Genre: Adventure, Horror, Psychological, Puzzle(?) PC - Windows The games in chronological order: The games are completely free of charge and can be downloaded at the following sites. 5 Days a Stranger 7 Days a Skeptic Trilby's Notes 6 Days a Sacrifice Story: Without spoiling too much. Basically, this dead boy with a very tragic and traumatic past has possessed an African idol, spreading terror and murder all around him. In most of the games you play as the cat burglar called Trilby. In all of the games you are basically locked up somewhere isolated, unable to escape. A mansion on the country-side, a space ship in space (Duh.), on an island with open see in all directions, and in an underground facility. And people around you disappears and gets murdered, and you don't know wtf is going on. Why is this mindfuck? (The following story is somewhat made up to avoid spoiling, but it's based on real events from the games, so the concept is exactly the same, just a bit scrambled.) You go into a room to explore. The room is a bar with luxury furniture and very tidy. On the wall hangs a painting of some old rich man. The room has cozy and warm lightning. You go back into the room you came from, but then you realize you forgot to check something out in that bar. You go back into the bar and what you see you will never forget... There's blood everywhere. The room is a total fucking mess. The furniture is ripped apart. The man on the painting has been replaced with a skeleton with deep, hollow eye sockets. You leg it, looking for help. You find someone, and you get him to come with you to investigate. You go back to the bar. Everything is perfectly normal. The guy next to you just frowns and looks at you accusingly. You proceed to investigate the bar as you can't believe your eyes. The other guy, obviously disappointed, goes back to where he came from. You spot a door. Was it there before? You're not quite sure. You enter the door, and it leads to a hallway. At the other end of that hallway stands a woman who shouldn't be there. No, you saw her die. You fucking held her dismembered head in your arms. Her dry blood is still on your shirt. You stare at each other for 5 full seconds, before she turns and walks calmly into the room behind her. You run after her, but the room you enter is empty. And there are no doors nor windows. You run back to the guy from before to report once again, knowing that he probably wont believe you this time. But you don't care. This is too much for you. You have to talk with someone. You enter the room where he's supposed to be. The only thing you find is a pair of broken glasses on the carpet. His glasses... The guy is nowhere to be found. You are now completely alone in this cursed place. This is a common scene in the John DeFoe series. Everything is nice and dandy at first. Then everything just fucks up leaving you looking like a question sign. You'll always find at least one room that has walls painted with blood, walking corpses, be on the verge of becoming insane, and you'll always end up being alone and locked up... And you'll be hunted throughout the whole game... And you never know wth is going on. The first 2 games are basically the same event repeating itself, while the 2 sequels holds answers and ties up loose ends. This is as close as you'll get to a Higurashi game. The games aren't obvious either, so you never know exactly where you are going, what you are doing, and why. They are actually quite hard. For example, in 7 Days, while alone, you'll get chased by a fucking homicidal machete-wielding zombie through the whole space ship. And he has the mysterious power of coming out of random rooms. And believe me... Getting him off your ass is not something you just figure out. I myself had to google it. Ah, the stress... Kyaa~ x3 |

- Eversion - Zaratustra Productions - You are a flower guy in a super happy world! But the princess has been kidnapped, so you must go rescue her using your misterious ability to everse! - SHINY (PC - Windows) - The game is so bright and happy! For example, in the very bright stage four there's a plant blocking your way. But don't worry! if you hit the smiling block it will be gone. READY! To die. Download the game (freeware) here: http://zarat.us/tra/offline-games/eversion.html - The Nameless Game - Square-Enix - You find this curious game with an unreadable title screen. Then you find out its glitched and messed up as hell and you are going to die in less than a week if you don't beat it. - Nintendo DS - You are playing a game that suddenl死死死死死死死死死死死 and then something is behind you and when you look you see how are you going to die painted with blood in a place that looks suspiciously similar to that of the game. |

How is Galerians mindfuck? I liked it, but it seemed to be pretty much 'straight' survival horror to me. However, trying to contribute something to the thread as well [not sure myself, though]: Portal Developer: Valve Publisher: Valve/EA [depends on platform] Platform: PC, PS3, 360 Genre: Puzzle Story: It's all shrouded in mystery! Mindfuck Reason: GLaDOS kind of tries to fuck you up. You never really get to know whether the things happening to you are all part of the simulation - or not. Actually, I'm really bad at explaining it... The Baron Developer: Victor Gijsbers Publisher: - [Freeware] Platform: PC Genre: Text Adventure Story: The daughter of the main character appears to be held hostage by the baron. Her father sets off to rescue her. Mindfuck Reason: The majority of aspects in this game are not what they seem at first. The setting, the characters, the story... however, it's a big spoiler to reveal anything. It turns out that actually, the "baron" is a metaphor for [a part of] the father himself, who is abusive towards his daughter. The first part of the story is only a sequence in a dream in which the father struggles with his character and own deeds. |

+ Silent Hill + The Suffering + Condemned + Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Pathologic (PC) Developer: Ice-Pick Lodge Publisher: Meridian 4 (EU), Buka Entertainment (Russia, Other world) Story and mindfuck'ness: Better read the review, it really describes the game. But the thing is Pathologic is based on dialogues originally written in fancy russian, so the translation may cause a lot of trouble, incomprehension and wrong impressions... but the original version made it the 2nd best game after Silent Hill for me. If you feel it, you won't give a fuck about graphics, game genre, etc.: you'll live it and absorb every word, every straw, every Town's change - everything. Just not to miss other incredible impression and another bit of integration into all this. |
