Well it is still a great news that we get a 2nd season ^^, the first one was pretty good .

Impossibru! Seriously, I never thought I would see a second season of this. I hope it animates some more interesting stories from the manga, because the mid section of the anime was a bit boring, before it stood back up and became great again.



I have all Sawaki x Kei doujins I could get my hands on but unfortunately I don't see it becoming canon :(

Moyashimon actually sold rather well. 8,492 average, which is usually guaranteed sequel territory for a show with source material remaining. It's more of a question why it took so long to get a sequel. It also got a live action drama, and the latest volume of the manga sold 302,170 which is very very good.

Now, Moyashimon may or may not be popular with doujin circles, but that's different from being unprofitable or unpopular generally, especially if its core target market isn't just traditional 20-something otaku.

I'm assuming Seiya0890's definition of "popular" was at a lower threshold than you're setting, then. Mine would be lower too. Nobody said it was the next Naruto, but 300k manga sales and 8.5k anime sales is way better than average in both respects. If that doesn't count as popularity, I think you've set the bar a bit too high.

No amount of sales "guarantees" a sequel, no, but what I mean is that if all other factors are in alignment (material is left to adapt, the creative team/animation studio is available and willing and doesn't have anything bigger on their plate, the legal rights are straightened out, and so forth), 8k is more than enough to justify a second season, especially of a show like Moyashimon that couldn't have been particularly expensive to animate.

The manga doing well isn't besides the point at all actually - increasing sales of the original work is usually the #1 goal of an anime adaptation. Many anime have mediocre disc sales but are a success because novel/game/manga/etc sales are boosted by the anime's exposure. That's how Bakuman can get 75+ eps on virtually non-existent anime sales. Anime DVD/BDs are, generally, not expected or intended to turn a profit by themselves. Although it's lovely when they do, of course.

I do think that 300k is enough to be considered as popular ^^, just like jmal said we may not have the same definition. Now things like k-on, madoka, etc that are (for some reasons I ignore) so popular, I don't intend to describ them by another word ^_^ .
But it is not like I want to enter in a debate with this word XD .

Sadly, that is true. I only know of three translated Sawaki x Kei doujins and a couple of raws. There are quite a few fanart pictures of the pair, however; you can find them even on danbooru.
