Today, while i was thinkig of action figures and how cd/dvd/bd writers coupled with fast speed connections changed music/anime industry, an idea came to my mind. Most of you should know about 3d printers, they are devices that create solid objects by hardening multiple thin layers of resin. I hought: what if we could print at home our action figures? Here's the answer:

A bit more than 10 years ago we had the first "domestic" cd writers, now we have bd's. Maybe in some time there will be sites that host CAD projects of figures for people to download and paint, or maybe even original fan-made ones. I have seen a 3d print of a fully functioning bearing, so even poseable figures with joints can be made.
I'm sure i would buy the originals anyway, but maybe i'd try to make new ones for myself. What would you do with a printer like this? Would you make your own figures yourself?

Yes this has gone a bit too "what if", but i think that 3d printers are one of the best examples of "tech trinkets" when they are used by amateurs, so instead of letting the thread die i decided to post :)

New tech is ALWAYS horribly expensive. Unless made by Apple, and then it is just expensive because Apple fans are fools easily separated from their money too often.

The iPad 2 is not junk, but considering the price...... Why pay 100-200 bucks more for the iPad 2 when the Asus Transformer Prime at 500 is the equal if not superior product?

Granted, 500 bucks to read a digital book at a coffee shop is a LOT of coffees you won't be drinking :)
It's also a lot of actual books too. Although for actual books, I prefer first run hard cover that usually runs 50 bucks. So 50 into 500 is not a great lot of hard covers.

It will be handy to use it to view video. And it will be handy to play some games on it. But it is saying a bit much to state the tablet can give a console or real computer any competition yet for current big hit games like perhaps Battlefield 3. But it is a real stretch saying it is anything but a great add on to the cost of what would normally be called light weight games.

If you can't spend 500 bucks, you might be able to spend 200 though. Plenty of adequate 7 inch tablets out there now. The iPad simply doesn't own the field any more, the market is saturated with hand held reader/web viewer/gamer friendly devices now. My Nintendo DSi XL is likely doomed to be given to my son. I have a few great games for it, but, the screen just ain't going to compete. I no longer give a fuck if the adult market ever gets taken seriously by Nintendo. The kids can keep it. Nintendo 3DS, couldn't care less.

If a person reeeeeeeally doesn't need it to read books, and likely never needs to use it standing, or in some location where sitting comfortable might be a hassle, then I suppose a lot of persons looking at tablets, likely should be looking at what they call 'netbooks', not to be mistaken for laptops (as some retailers seem to do). Netbooks are tiny sized, yet often more powerful than tablets, are essentially mini laptops and have the keyboard but most importantly, are not yesterday's device and as such, the prices are a lot more approachable. Netbooks likely will die off rapidly though. Not good enough to be laptops, not as handy as touch sensitive tablets.

Regarding 3d printers. It's not new actually. I have watched lasers with the aid of a holographic driven image, create solid wood chairs with no effort at all.

I have seen computer controlled lasers also essentially 'print' images into solid wood. And the detail is quite considerable too.

It is not all that weird to think that the common schmuck in a short while might have access to printers that can generate 3d plastic items. Only thing limiting it, is demand driving the price.

If all those other tablets ran iOS, the iPad's true huge advantage, then there'd be place for discussion between all of these... like I said, android is a vary variable OS and depends on its host too heavily.

Hardware matters only if you're talking android vs android, not apple vs apple. Due to apple being the only one making their hardware and OS's, they're all nicely rounded and unified between the recent stuff. In things like smartphones and tablets, intuitiveness and ease of use are key. Apple wins there.

It's easy to say that they rely heavily on blind fanboys and their hardware is overpriced for no reason, but that's only half true, given that they offer a wonderful platform for developers and users alike, quality made and reliable across the table.

Now mac computers... I'm 100% with you there :P

If I want to read books, why should I buy a tablet? I'd much prefer a decent sized ebook reader, it's less expensive and has e-ink display.

Netbooks aren't all that comfortable to use, but I think that if you want a really portable pc they still beat tablets.

As for as Appple's portable devices you have to admid that they have the best hardware-software integration. Did you know that apparently Apple has hundreads of hardware engineers while it doens't even produce hardware? Many works on fixes and slight modifications to standard hardware to fine-tune it and improve its synergy with iOS. I'm not willing to spend 500 Euro anyway, but it's an advantage of Apple's products.

3D printers? I'd print myself a house! Joking apart I think 3D printers won't drop in prices very quickly as I don't think there would be great demand among normal people.

I don't know, many people could need it, but why should they search for it on MAL? If you use Google you can find most of your questions have already been answered by dedicated communities.

Wouldn't hurt.

But with the release of Ice Cream Sandwich, the Android program becomes more unified and less fractured to some extent invalidating the Apple advantage. The release of Windows 8 might render the need for Android any name pointless too.

The second any device at all can run on Windows might be a scary fiction writers dream come true of course.

But while it might be fun to have a written article here on basic PC knowledge, it likely would only get buried soon enough. You might get a few back slaps and then forgotten by next month. Just so you know the risks :)

Most of the things that happen to electronics, usually happen because the user was simply a lazy turd and didn't realize 'hey if you don't do this, then this usually happens'.

How many here know how to format their hardware, and then re install the OS? Do you realize the single most important step after buying something is to send in the warrantee card? Next, you should partition every computer the moment you get it home. Because leaving a computer as just having one large C partition is the same as laughing in the face of fate. Fate reeeeeally hates that by the way.

There are right ways and wrong ways to do almost anything where computers and the internet are concerned. I regularly surf porn for the usual reason, and I have never once suffered for it. But then again, I also regularly format re install the OS on my computers, so accumulated 'stuff' from normally ill advised actions doesn't impact me the way it might plenty of others.

Do you understand why the various anti virus programs are liked or disliked?

When you install browsers, do you seriously look at what you are selecting as yes or no options?
We've all heard you don't want to click yes to toolbar crap, but how many here understand the differences in the level of security from their internet access set from outside of their browsers?

@LazYSlackeR: good video! Having a flat roof like that would be a problem though. Wait there would be so many problems with a building process like that xD
Yes, there aren't practical everyday applications, but it would be a nice addition to any model constructor. It would be another one of those professional things that nobody really needs, but many people would buy it.

If talking modern gaming, CPU, GPU, and RAM.

You could do well with a Radeon HD 6670 as a dedicated GPU, a Pentium Dual-Core E6700 CPU, if your motherboard takes the latter (check with Packard Bell I guess), and 2gb more RAM... but looking at the costs of that upgrade, I'd replace the whole system altogether... if you gave me a budget (in $) I could try to conjure something up... DDR2 really holds this thing down.

Yeah, I also think the best thing to do is to buy a new system instead of upgrading it. I thought about upgrading the RAM (my motherboard limits according to many places is 2 GB) as a provisional measure until I get my new computer, though.

Quad cores have dropped in price a lot since Hexa cores are out and running, those are very cheap and very very strong little things.

Is that lappy out of necessity or do you simply don't want to build a desktop?

It's plenty powerful. About 20% more than mine, and mine is very good to begin with.

Laptops, however, are a bad idea for emulators or serious gaming because of non-upgradeable graphics cards and low core frequencies. A serious gamer on the cheap would be far better off with an Athlon II x4 640 at the least and an i5 2400 at the most, coupled with a Radeon HD 6850 or its nvidia competitor, GTX 560 (not Ti )

Well, video games are among the most hardware intensive applications, so...

For games, you could build the same deal with $700 USD, that's why. Athlon x4 640, Radeon HD 6770, 4gb of RAM, Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 mobo... for games, you are set. Not max settings probably, but you will be close in most of them... and those $700 include the monitor and KB+mouse. But if we're talking video edting, CAD, etc... then you would need something with more of a kick.

You could do even cheaper with a socket FM1 based system, but I'm pretty sure that it's a socket thats about to retire soon, while AM3+ still has lots of time ahead of it.

@Kruisnek: Badass PC. Is that 920 OC'd? It'd be a pity if it weren't!
Also, damn @ all that HDD space =P

Well, there are some gaming fanatics which love to max out all the settings and brag about super high frame rates :/

And, as a personal opinion...4GB of RAM seems too low for me. If I were to buy a new computer, I would buy one with 8+.

Of course, 4GB is quite good for today's standards, but when it comes to computers, a little foresight is needed.

...Or maybe that's just me, who uses computers intensively, and put too much strain.

As for the second, that's you dude =P
Win7 x64 is a speed demon with 4GB of RAM, and most games have their recommended amount at 2-4 STILL. 4GB more RAM is just $25-$30, by the way. I bought 4 sticks of 2GB for myself right off the bat only because I didn't want any compatibility problems later on. Later, sold them for 2x4GB, for the sake of foresight indeed (who knows, perhaps I'm gonna need more someday, and I need the open slots =P)

I miss my first PC, a Coppermine Pentium III, heheh. Slot 1! Man, I wish I had one of those to mess around with =P
My best friend of those days had a Thunderbird Athlon as well... hell... his PC was so much better than mine and I was jealous as hell. Notice how the temps of that CPU are unannounced? It doesn't have a thermal diode, which is pretty much the reason why AMD had the burning CPU rep. It won't turn off if it overheats... just so you know =P

It's pretty impressive that it still works, actually. Well, works after you implemented your magic on it.
If anything, you could add a little more RAM to it and it'd be fine until april 2014 (WinXP will be phased out then =/ )... but if it works, don't fix it.

By the way, you can do it with smartphones. A Nokia 6680 responds very happily to smacks, heheh.

But it was monochrome.

Then I got an Ait...Good ol' AMD K6 and such.

Cool, that's what I call as "the computer"!

Haha, they really believed you dropped it from your table?
Take care of your new one, I don't think they will do the same again :D

Reminds me of dropping my mp3 player several times to the asphalt. It never broke, is still working perfectly. It was really cheap ;D

But Apple is not bad in general. I also dropped my MacBook two times and it's still working. Maybe only small things like iPhone or iPod are more fragile.

If I were to buy another cell phone, I would go for an Android, like that Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.0 *-*
