I've noticed a lot of these are pictures that you took rather than drawing digitally or scanning. Do you guys use a camera, or would a smartphone work just fine?

I haven't uploaded anything to my dA yet, since I'm out one scanner since I moved from my dad's... I've been thinking of using my brother's phone, but I decided the quality would probably be pretty bad.

The pictures you guys are taking look good though.

yeah it was a request from a writer on deviantart
gave me the reference pics and told me she wanted her characters to be the same. I wasnt given much freedom on this request lol.

Im afraid your mistaken on the tracing, if it were traced my lines would be a hell of a lot cleaner lol.
Im unfortunately not at the original artists level as seen, but I did imitate it for the use of a request and this picture as reference this artist is just amazing those soft lines and coloring. so jealous!

ooh ic, ic, I understand! I just find it more visually appealing to have shadows a different hue then the base colour. Maybe I'll try a different color with blue to spice it up, since blue+purple is my regular combo. Thanks! :)

I doubt my art will be well received since I don't draw anime (anymore), and focus mainly on realism. That, and my art isn't digital, traditional only.

This is a WIP of my current piece. It's my late grandpa, who passed away late July. He used to praise my artwork (since I was a kid), so what better way to honor him than to draw him?

are you using watercolor to shade? I'd say you drew the head a bit shorter than in the photo, but otherwise it looks really good ^^

No, it's just graphite. I mainly use graphite, because I enjoy using it.

I have some tips, if you would like to improve: I can see your lines aren't very confident and smooth. When you're going to do line art, try doing it by keeping your wrist still, and draw with your wrist. You can add detail and such with your wrist moving, but for lines, you'll get better results by only moving your arm.

As for the shading, if you want to give it a more natural shading look, don't draw outlines of where the shading is. I know anime is like that, but you could just shade whichever areas, and make the shape, instead of outlining and then filling in. That or you could learn how to make more of a gradient look. That looks real nice when done on anime drawings. Also, look into layering with graphite. You can find free tutorials online, like on DeviantArt.

I hope you keep it up.
