In case you haven't heard about it yet, now that I've found a somewhat reliable way of doing it, Taiga's going to support streaming videos, starting with version 0.9.

Currently (on the latest development build) it supports 3 web browsers:

  • Google Chrome (tested on 15.0.874.15)
  • Mozilla Firefox (tested on 6.0.2)
  • Opera (tested on 11.51)

    ...and 4 anime streaming sites:

  • Crunchyroll
  • Veoh
  • Viz Anime
  • YouTube

    My current stance on illegal streaming sites is not to provide individual support for any. Instead, I'll add a small feature that lets the user choose any source they want. This is mostly because (1) I don't quite like the idea of promoting them, and (2) there's a hell of lot of them.

    So, are there any other legal anime streaming sites that I don't know of? I'll also add Funimation if I can somehow get it working via a proxy or whatnot.

    Hulu - kind of surprised it didn't make your first list
    Funimation - they regular simulcast a handful of series every season (mirrored on youtube)
    NicoNico Douga - they have an english site now that regularly simulcasts, but the original japanese one will fail recognition anyway
    Anime News Network - MAL's biggest rival has legal anime streams, mostly through deals with Funimation
    Crackle - also air some simulcasts (Ao no Exorcist) along with many older series
    The Anime Network - television channel that airs anime online too

    There are a couple more listed on this impressively-complete list here that I may have missed:

    Wow, that's a huge list. And looks like it's even updated properly.

    It seems pretty much impossible to support Hulu at this moment. Almost all the page titles are in "Anime Title: Episode Name" format and there's no apparent way to get the episode number. Same thing goes for Funimation simulcasts. Other than that, I was only able to add ANN for now. All the other ones have their pages open to the US only and don't let me in.

    Hopefully this is the right place to post this, checked over at Recognition problems but that seems like it is all torrent related. I am having trouble with the update for taiga through streaming. I have chrome checked along with crunchy roll under media providers but when i stream from it it does not update. I am currently on Version 30.0.1599.101 m for chrome and 1.0.244 beta Taiga. My guess is that it is not working do to the version of my chrome, or that I just over looked an option to make this function work. And I also couldn't find the feature that lets you choose where the stream is from for the "small feature that lets the user choose any source they want", so that could also be where my problem is, because maybe I just can't find that whole section related to this. Thanks for your time!

    Hello, rawkus789. There's no section related to streaming media other than the Recognition page of Settings, so you should be okay with simply selecting Chrome and Crunchyroll from there. That being said, we've recently made some changes that are not yet released to public, and they should fix the streaming media recognition. You may try it by downloading it from here and replacing your old Taiga.exe with it, but note that it might be a bit unstable (most notably the new torrent filters, if you're using them). Let me know if it works for you.

    Downloaded that version and still didn't work for me, and then did a fresh install and still nothing so not sure. Tried it with Kuroko no Basket, Magi on crunchyroll, and tried out Trigun on YouTube (put alternatives for each just in case). Pictures of my settings, just in case something is wrong there. Thanks for the reply and the help as well.

    Hello I have been using Crunchyroll for streaming and it has been working great with Taiga so far, but sometimes doesn't always have all of the shows that I want. I was just wondering where the feature is that you mentioned that allows me to add a streaming site. I have been looking for a while but cant seem to find it, is it in one of the .xml files or is it planning to be added still?

    @rawkus789:
    Could it be that you're using a browser with a different language setting? A a slight oversight on my part, I recently realized that Taiga's browser detection doesn't work if the user's browser is not in English.

    @bobb789:
    I haven't added that feature yet, as no one seemed to be interested in it. In fact, I totally forgot about it until you brought it up :) I now added it to my to-do list as a feature with low priority.

    I'm very interested. There are a ton of other LEGAL sites that do anime that I'm sure you're far too busy to add especially since most the users probably don't use them.There's also still some anime that no legal sites pick up,ever. I would love the ability to add my own sites to the list.I also spent time going through every XML file looking for a way to do this lol.

    I had no idea Veoh had legal anime until I downloaded this program and checked lol.

    I do have to ask though, is it possible to add Netflix? I generally don't use them very often due to their very limited amount of subtitled anime (Can't stand most dubs), but I'm still curious about it.

    In theory, as long as the anime title and the episode number is available in the web page's URL or title in a consistent form, it can be done. Then all you need is a signature to detect the streaming service, and some information on how to parse the title. All that information is currently hard-coded into Taiga, but I guess I will extract that into an XML file sometime so that it will be extensible.

    You support torrenting, but won't support illegal streaming? I'm a little confused at that...

    There are ethical, technical, personal, and strategic reasons for this. I previously replied to a similar question on another site, so I'll just be a lazy bum and quote myself from there. The decision is not set in stone, but the quote below explains some of the reasons behind it:

    As long as the site provides a consistent way to detect the anime title and the episode number in the URL or the page title, it's possible. I was once planning to add a feature that makes the list customizable, so that people could add the streaming sites they use, on their own. But adding a feature to Taiga usually means that I encourage people to use it. I feel like I don't want to do that, especially when there are better alternatives (e.g. legal streams for what's available, torrents or XDCC for the rest).

    It's true that Taiga offers an option to download torrents, or rather, helps you find torrents for anime videos. For some, this alone is something to be concerned about. For instance, /r/anime mods are apparently deleting posts linking to Taiga, because it's against the rules to "link to/mention torrents". I kinda understand the decision, but it's something that deters people from discovering Taiga. But then again, it's not all about reaching more people. Besides, Taiga seems to be doing just fine despite the interference. I'm happy with its steady growth, especially when you consider the fact that I haven't announced or advertised it on anywhere, save MAL and HB. But I digress.

    Do you use that site yourself? If so, may I ask why? It seems to me that these unofficial streaming sites are somehow making money, even though they don't provide a particularly good service; they're just easily accessible and free. I'd like to know if there are actually "good" ones out there.

    I think Funimation redesigned their site, because their video pages display episode numbers now:

    The text looks like:

    Ergo Proxy
    Deus Ex Machina
    Episode 23.0

    ----

    <div class="heading">
    <h2>Ergo Proxy<br/>
    Deus Ex Machina</h2>
    </div>
    <p class="chaner-data left gray4">Episode
    23.0  | TV-MA</p>

    Taiga doesn't have access to the page's DOM, though. Neither the page title ("Ergo Proxy - Deus Ex Machina") nor the URL ("/shows/ergo-proxy/videos/official/deus-ex-machina") includes the episode number. It could attempt to redownload and parse the HTML page after retrieving the URL, but I'd rather not do this unless absolutely necessary.

    I'm currently looking into a seemingly better method, namely creating browser extensions/add-ons that would be able to communicate with Taiga, perhaps through WebSockets. This should also get rid of the issue where stream recognition doesn't work on non-English browsers. Any help on this would be appreciated.

    That's not true anymore, I assume?
