Without wanting to sound like I'm advertising I thought I would mention I do know a site providing free software to make your own VN's and that their are quite a few people who do this who then release them for the rest of the community to enjoy for free (or they can sell them).

Most of them won't have as good a story as some of the japanese ones but hey its in English and if you've got any writting talent you can always try to do one yourself. I'll post a link if people are intrested.

Where do people usually release them to?

Normally you have an own blog and post it there. After a while some people will notice it and it will be added in vndb. Then more and more people will download your stuff.
