The official website of the new anime adaptation of Reiko Yoshida and Mia Ikumi's Tokyo Mew Mew manga announced a second season on Wednesday, revealing an announcement video. The anime is scheduled to air in April 2023 on TV Tokyo, BS TV Tokyo, and AT-X.

The magical girl manga was published in Nakayoshi from August 2000 to December 2002. Yoshida and Ikumi serialized a two-volume sequel titled Tokyo Mew Mew à La Mode in the same magazine between March and December 2003.

Studio Pierrot adapted the manga into a 52-episode television anime that aired from Spring 2002 to Winter 2003. 4Kids Entertainment licensed and dubbed the first 26 episodes. The new 12-episode anime adaptation produced by Yumeta Company and Graphinica aired in Summer 2022.

Tokyopop previously published the manga and its sequel in English between 2003 and 2006. Kodansha Comics relicensed the series and released all nine volumes in four omnibuses in 2011.

Synopsis
Thirteen-year-old Ichigo Momomiya is at an endangered animal exhibit with her crush Masaya Aoyama when she is hit by a beam of light and sees a cat entering her body. She begins to demonstrate cat-like behavior the following day. A giant monster attacks Masaya and forces Ichigo to transform into a pink magical girl with cat ears and a tail.

A boy named Ryou Shirogane explains that the monster she fought was a Chimera Anima—alien parasites that infect animals and turn them into giant monsters. Ryou and Keiichiro Akasaka, the owner of a pink cafe called Cafe Mew Mew, planned to take the DNA of five Red Data Animals and use them as biological weapons by injecting them into Chimera Anima—an experiment they called the Mew Project. But due to an earthquake the day before, the DNA was accidentally shot into Ichigo and four other girls that she met outside the museum instead!

Now a "biological weapon," Ichigo must fight against the aliens and find her potential teammates—all while keeping her feline identity a secret from Masaya. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

So, nowadays endless shows have just been replaced with shows with multiple seasons? I wonder how many seasons One Piece and Detective Conan would have in our time.

As a person who hates reading and gets headache out of it its honestly great seeing sequels become more and more common.

Does it make any difference other than you get more updates to your MAL list?

Yes it does alot... i rather watch an completed story than a 12 episode source material advertisement i will never read.

Tbh i rather even watch a mediocre completed story than a legendary tier 12 ep anime.

What I was discussing was not that shows were getting sequels at all, but that modern studios are avoiding long shows in favor of dividing them up into seasons. For example, in a few years, MHA will approach 100+ episodes.

It makes sense from economic standpoint to do that sense they get to sell more merch such as blurays ect and build up hype with each new season.

From a consumer standpoint, what does it matter honestly if they animate 1 season with 100 episodes or 8 season with 12 episodes ? The end result will still be the same.

I might even go as far as to say its a good thing in terms of quality cause studios / animators get less strict deadlines in term of episodes (But it can be debatable)

to add to that we only need 12 more episodes to finish mew mew based on how it ended today

Well, that's nice, tho people were suspecting as much, only 1-cour of this would have been pretty lame after the somewhat long wait.

Obviously, they couldn't tell everything in 12 episodes. In the old anime and 52 series, the weather didn't make, lol
May be some anime?

I know a lot of people are surprised, but I always assumed this would be the case. I'm just surprised they're not calling it a split-cour or something.
