In the late 90s, renowned surrealist director Satoshi Kon's early work was a 90s adaptation of the Stardust Crusaders arc. Above are two clips: one is the anime overlaid with the 2012 anime's dialogue, while the other is a simple comparison of the two adaptations.

While the animation's quality is definitely on a different level, Kon's knowledge of making things surreal (a knowledge few artists can apply well) adds a distinct unreal vibe to the story that fits with the supernatural angle. That vibe gives his adaptation a definite edge that puts it on par with the more straight-laced shonen adaptation by David Production.

The 1993 JJBA is still the most entertaining piece of JJBA animation there is. It takes liberties and differs from the manga, but it's just so fun to watch. One of my all time favorites from my childhood.

Ehhh the older one definitely had more fluid animation than David Production's adaption. Watch both and compare them.

yeah, you might be right about that but its lower quality in everything else. i'd still prefer david productions artstyle.

This adaptation's biggest problem is how much they cut. It could have been a lot better.

Overall decent, very good atmosphere and fights, but the reverse order makes things unnecesarilly complicated and the tone is more serious than it needs to for a JoJo series.

Satoshi Kon didn't work on that episode.

He was enshutsu/episode director on the previous one.

There is a difference between "Director" and "episode director".

One version has attempted rape, the other... doesn't? Your choice as to which looks better.
