In 3 chapters, in only 3 chapters, this series makes you feel a lot of things. And not so much because of the context and the deepening of the characters, because you haven't seen "much" yet, but with so little they transmit so much. In addition, the cinematographic language is beautiful. Shaft studio should go back to what it was when it was doing things like this.

I like plenty of shows like this but I'm not quite sure why I'm finding this one kind of boring. I really can't exactly point to anything particular that's bad but it all just feels like its not for me. The art is very good but I personally don't care for the thick lipped moe blob style it uses for characters. And I think my total lack of understanding of shogi makes that aspect much less interesting as well. In Hikaru no Go and Akagi I also didn't know the games particularly well but they felt presented in a way that felt more engaging as well as having ways of showing more clearly what exactly was happening. I think shogi especially just doesn't look like anything if you don't know it because all the pieces look the same, which is not a fault of the show but still holds it back.

I'll get a bit further in before I move on but I'm disappointed that this show is so highly rated and its not doing anything for me.
