Yeah, I know. I was referring to NWOBHM separately. So yeah, I'd say Traditional Metal for my favorite.

It's a great genre, very underappreciated, that's for sure.

I fail to understand how is Deathstars Industrial Metal or Disturbed Nu Metal.
Since both really fall inside the rock music bandwagon. Deathstars really don't have anything Industrial in their music either. I'm not even going to say anything about how metal Nu Metal really is cause it's pointless.

I'm interested in hearing your definitions of alternative metal. How in the world do you coin being alternative? Does it apply to bands that are hard to classify, or is it a tag used with bands that have "sold out" and gone "alternative", dumbing down their sound? (Nu Flames comes to mind first, although I don't really hate their new material with a passion). If I'm completely lost with this one - please, enlighten me. At any rate, it sounds like a really vague definition to me..

Also, post-metal. Isn't post-metal a meta-definition that could apply to, say, thrash, black or pretty much any genre out there? In case post-metal in this case means bands like Isis, then that's a somewhat valid tag, I guess. Still, all these post-black metal and other tags sound so lame to me. Anyways, if you are going with the meta-tags, then why not put "Avant-garde" up there as well?

And while I'm at it, what exactly is "fun metal"? I did read the OP, but regardless of being fun as fuck, Spinal Tap are still a trad metal band. I guess fun metal is a cool way of putting it, though.

That is all, I guess. Well, there's still Nu-, but that's too obvious and boring to mention by now.

Oh and to answer the question: pretty much everything goes, quality is what matters. But I guess I tend to listen to thrash the most, when in the metal-mood. Or alternatively, some pretty cheesy (yet awesome) power metal bands like Machinae Supremacy. To be honest, the amount of metal I listen to has gradually decreased during the past few years, although I still need my daily metal fix...

Wow, what a fucking tl;dr.

I listen any genre(whatever I want to listen at that time), but it's obvius that my genre is "Melodic Death Metal" especially Swedish Death Metal. Apart from the list above, Florida Death or Technical Death are also the genres I like. (Morbid Angel, Death, Atheist, Pestilence, Carcass etc)

And one impotant point: "Amon Amarth" isn't a Viking Metal band. The Viking Metal side is valid only for the lyrics. They perform Swedish Death Metal. If you say Viking Metal; Enslaved, Thyrfing, Månegarm, Einherjer or sth like these must be mentioned.

  • Power metal : Kamelot , Sonata Artica etc...

  • Melodic Death metal : Insomnium , Dark Tranquillity , Scar Symmetry , In Flames , Eternal tears of Sorrow , Noumena , Diablo , Soilwork , Norther etc...

  • Folk/Viking metal : Ensiferum , Wintersun , Turisas , Subway to Sally (folk metal) etc..

  • Symphonic metal : Nigtwish , After Forever , Epica , Within temptation etc..

Someother bands that I like are : Opeth (progressive metal) , Katatonia (doom/progressive metal) , Rammstein (Industrial metal)

I won't care posting the bands that are so called Nu metal since they are more like hard rock / Altern rock :D

Black metal is the best.
I like all kinds of black, raw black, sometimes melodic black, symphonic black and when im depressed depressive black is just perfect.
I also like folk and pagan but not as much as black.
Black pagan is also a nice combination.

Vader, Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Atheist, Pestilence, Deicide

Well I think that's it pretty much...

Oh shit I forgot Nile, only technical death which doesn't give me headaches...

And I know I'm n00b and old-school but that's the best school :D
