This thread is intended to serve as a brief summary of and an introduction to the attitudes towards manga.

As a result of the complex and new way of shaping the understanding of text manga has become a huge phenomenon in Japan. In Japan there is an increasing interest in manga as a valuable literary form. Some universities, for example, have started to include manga study in their literature programs. Further, readers and writers of manga have realised that manga can have some, or all, of the characteristics that we would expect of a 'quality' text. So why is west still so far behind? And what should we do to change the attitudes towards manga as a mere entertainment to, yet another account of literature that shapes the understanding of texts?

I believe that it is necessary to take advantage of every opportunity to broaden and deepen overseas knowledge about the japanese attitude towards manga and to further our understanding of our foreign counterparts.

The thing is that manga is not as widespread in the west as you may think it is?

A friend of mine did his undergrad thesis in comics as another type of text that has the same narrative characteristics than any other type of narrative accounts in prose and he was praised for it. The professors didn't know the webcomics he used, but they were still within stuff they knew because they could compare them to the comics in newspapers, but manga is not something everyone is aware of in the west.

Japan, on the other hand, has this a cultural product and it makes sense that they study it as a cultural phenomenon.

Well..having more of them actually in comic stores or a barnes and nobes around globally is probably a good step. It's often mentioned that people can't really find any manga 'round.

Also, it's a homegrown product, west is obviously always going to be *behind*.
