Episode 1:

KyoAni does action/fantasy!

This show was like 400th last time I checked in the rankings, and its suddenly dropped to 1300th XD. I don't think this show really has much potential and the light novel sales doesn't seem to be doing so well, so I think it will probably end up buried and dead after this season.

Still it's kyoani so I can at least expect some great art and they seem to be doing a lot of fanservice, so I guess you can always enjoy that.

As for episode 1, I dunno about what everyone else things, but the pacing felt a bit off for me. I'm not a great fan of any of the characters (which might change in later episodes) and I feel like it can do a great deal of improvement. Whether this show will be good or not, will mostly depend on the source material, and if the source material is terrible, the anime will be terrible.

This anime is bad and kyoani should feel bad about it.

I also didn't like the first episode.

The world don't look that interesting, and the introduction of the characters was a bit , idk generic .
The animation was good but just that.

Musaigen no Phantom World Episode 1 Thoughts
To start off this, I'm not really a fan of the opening song or ending song initially.

The opening segment though was a bit psychology based, so it was a nice way to open up the show.
They definitely were trying to be flashy with this episode with the phantom scenes.
Saori Hayami is the voice for Reina Izumi. She is the same voice actor that does Shirayuki from Akagami.
So will be hearing her voice twice a week this season.

I had fun watching this episode. Though Kawahami might need an ecchi tag hehe.
Haruhiko is a history nut. He helps give the phantoms a meaning to their existence like we saw with our third appearance with sneaking in some backstory. I don't think this will end up being anything amazing but I'm intrigued enough to go into episode two with a good mood.

In regards to the pacing that Viyrew mention.
It was quicker pacing but I feel that they got into what they needed to for the first episode.
We understand how the phantoms came to be, we understand that there is a bigger meaning to them as we saw with the limbo scene.
We also saw that not everything is going to be a monster fight like the coming out with a bang first fight of the show. So it was an informative episode.

First ep was meh.

If you're gonna complain about a cliche then why do you still do it.

It was a meh first episode. Could be cool, but I feel like this is going to end up being packed with terribly cliche and pandering content. And with just how much emphasis was placed on that one girl's chest it practically feels like an Ecchi.

Since everyone is complaining about the bad things I'll point out the good things... it had catchy limbo music I guess...

Here's me hoping this flops.
"The sea spills over the doorsill into the room, and the cockroaches scramble to escape by crawling up the walls. Those not quick enough are caught in the swirling current and float up with it or lie on their backs pretending to be dead."

True, there were some good things still. Personally I actually really dug the OP quite a lot, and the introduction was at least relatively interesting, even if it basically just took age old optical illusions off the internet and gave them explanation for the millionth time. Animation while occasionally quite exaggerated seems very nice too.

Not a fan of the OP, and the way they did exposition was awful, when the character doing the exposition goes "this is common knowledge but I'll explain it anyways" then something is clearly wrong.

In a setting about imagination getting real. Teenagers in highschool is the most imaginative thing the writter could think about. :D

Mhmm. Also I think that the "avoid the boob-grab cliche" scene is a perfect example of why being self aware does not automatically make something good. They try to avoid the trope by just going with the same exact trope but with a different body part, making it identical to another trope. It effectively changed nothing. If you're self-aware and do nothing with it then it's meaningless.

Mentioning Kant... Seriously? The beggining stuff of this cartoon is so pretentious.

They spend half of the episode with boring exposition talk, they dont understand "show dont tell" in the slightest. And fuck subtlety. And the other is pointless fanservice stuff.

And why the girll just dont eat everything. dafaqi.

Reina is pretty much the only reason I'm watching this at this point. Like it's not terrible, but as Fell said, it's quite pretentious about it's overarching story, and while it's still early on nothing is really pulling me in... except Reina's powers maybe! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

So many stretching scenes in one episode =p

I also don't get it why the Reina girl don't just use her black hole eating ability before...'-'

It seems like they have to settle the phantom somehow before they can seal it. Like last week they didn't actually try to seal away the telephone poles until they were content after the limbo. Sort of like weakening a Pokemon before catching it I guess...

Hmm maybe.. still doesn't make much sense for the phantom to be still for the "dark hole" to work .. hope they explain it better at some point.

During the summoning of that dog thing in the third episode: "I'm using red paint as blood."

What the hell is this? It was established last episode that blood is needed to summon a phantom, and now it's just like "Naw, you just need something that's red."

My God...
This is managing to get worse and worse as time goes on.

You should be asking why dumb teenagers are doing this stuff and not adult people with special training since they said its dangerous.

@Fell: Unless I'm misremembering how the first episode explanation went, it's because the gene change that altered people's minds only to see the Phantoms only came into affect in their children? If that was the case though it's hard to believe entire schools and facilities focused on that would be built by now, because it was only 17 years ago or something?

...Honestly why am I bothering defending this? Even when it does come up with reasons for it's BS they're still stupid!

I dropped the show.
This show doesn't have any plot to it. It doesn't even want to give us a proper fan-service episode XD.
Just episodic phantoms with below average characters.
Some decent art sometimes. But I don't see it going anywhere so I'm satisfied with 8 episodes.
Final Score: 3/10
