~ Orange ~

Synopsis

"One day, Takamiya Naho receives a letter written to herself from ten years in the future. As Naho reads on, the letter recites the exact events of the day, including the transfer of a new student into her class named Naruse Kakeru.

The Naho from ten years later repeatedly states that she has many regrets, and she wants to fix these by making sure the Naho from the past can make the right decisions—especially regarding Kakeru. What's more shocking is that she discovers that ten years later, Kakeru will no longer be with them. Future Naho asks her to watch over him closely.

Just finished it today :)

I think it was a really good read, handling it's themes realistically while still mostly keeping with the cute shoujo romance atmosphere. Even though Naho is kind of a typical shoujo protagonist I still managed to get interested and root for her relationship with Kakeru.

While I think the time travel elements were used well (specifically how their actions had very clear but not overblown effects on their timeline), the explanation of how they managed to send the letters back through time seems kinda stupid and would have been better left unexplained if that was the best the author could come up with.

I agree that the explanation how they managed to send the letters back to the past seemed rather out of the blue and probably could have been done better. But as the author did these flashbacks/-forwards, I think it would also have been weird if they hadn't given any explanation at all about how the two "timelines" are connected.

All in all, I think it was an enjoyable read, even though I tend not to like romance stories all that much. But somehow the story managed to get me hooked all the same.

I didn't like Orange that much tbh... It felt like the only words they knew where "happy" and "regret".

Maybe the fact that I haven't read that many manga yet made it seem better to me. If I had already read 20 similar stories or so, I might not have enjoyed it that much, either.

Well I finally finished it, kind of surprised by the second half since it was better than I though. First half was a let down though.

I agree with @FizzleFizzle in terms of the time travel explanation. That was complete utter nonsense, and there was no reason the author should have tried explaining how they did it.

The characters were really badly portrayed. I mean lets talk first about Suwa Hiroto. He married AND had a child with Naho, and now he completely regrets it and doesn't mind a future, where hes not married to Naho, and not have his child. Naho also seems to feel the same, and she's just your typical shoujo manga character. Could have tried to design it a biiiit better. Kakeru was a okay character. The others didn't get any development so it's a bit hard to comment on them.

Art was pretty good. Nothing much to say about it.

The story had a good premises, but I was completely let down by the way the author approached it. It's like if the author doesn't know that the power of friendship is stupid and boring to read to some people.

I actually don't really understand why this manga is rated so high( 22nd). It wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing.

Scored a 5-6/10 for me.

I have no idea why it didn't cross my mind when I read it, but I have to agree. It could have been explained, like if their relationship wasn't as good as it seemed or the suicide affected them enough that it just might be worth it etc. But it was never brought up and dealt with so we don't know and it just seems unrealistic.

I thought it was cute, but not really my kind of manga if I'm gonna be reading manga...
It was interesting enough but lacking. It pissed me off at Suwa and Naho. but at least things semi worked out, I guess.

all in all it was a cute yet irritating read.

This manga is way too cutesy for my taste. Sure it's sad, but it's just the stereotypical love story where the lead character is trying to save the person they love. It was okay for being so girly though.

Ok, time for my two cents.

So a school girl with low self-esteem is given a letter by herself from the future to save an emo transfer student from dying so that she can rewrite the future where she will have no regrets...

#1. Teacher says time travel can be possible via wormholes. So where did those letters come from? The Future? What the heck did they do, throw the letters into the Bermuda Triangle, and they just happened to end up at the addresses of the characters? And they did that because they said it could "work"?

LAME

#2. Mother of emo transfer student happens to be emo herself. So she can't live a day without her son being with her?

LAME

#3. What supporting characters?

LAME

#4. You know what annoys me? When solving a problem happens to have the same method. Emo boy going emo? Call your friends! Emo boy getting mad? Call your friends! Can't stand up for yourself? CALL YOUR FRIENDS! I don't think Naho could do anything by herself. At all...

LAME

#5. Emo boy finds Mother's cellphone. Finds a 300 word essay.

"Kakeru, don't be sad. Be happy with your friends."

Really? REALLY? That's the message?

THE EASIEST OF READS!

#6. This is the big one...

In one world, Naho is married to Suwa. In another world, Naho is with Kakeru. In other words, both boys win? PARALLEL WORLDS?

WHY.......

Who said Orange was a good idea?

Wait...

Haha, I agree! XD

And of course, the manga doesn't really keep up if you start to think about the flaws in its logic, and flaws in the design of the characters' personalities and the flaws of...
Okay, I guess it IS rather flawed, all in all. XD I still enjoyed it, though.

Orange just makes no sense because all the flaws. I don't understand how Naho is so normal, well normal isn't quite the right word, Naho is almost unphased by the fact that the logic behind all of this is future Naho and all the others future selves feel guilty because they think it's their fault Kakeru died. Kakeru just could've told them he had a personal thing after school then all of this could've been avoided.

Too much spice? Sorry if I offended anyone. But I tend to go out of hand when things don't make sense. And to know that Orange is getting a live-action film...Well I guess it's a shoujo for a reason. Still...

Well, when we suggest another shoujo/romance manga, I got just the one. Hell, even the word "Orange" has more significance in it! Bring it. Bring it! BRING IT!

My other thoughts:
Happy ending, fine by me. It felt rusty and unpolished with make-up on... if you get what I'm trying to say.
The sparkles and all covered up the convenient cheap stroy elements. I would say it's closer to meh (5) than anything else but since it had a happy ending maybe 6~
I'll leave it blank for now.

The side story Haru-iro Astronaut is full of love triangles and stuff. Comedic to some degree but nothing really interesting.

Final thoughts: I don't regret reading this but honestly I've read better shoujo manga

edit: Given it a 6/10 after finishing Haru-iro Astronaut

By the way, I found out that there was a recent live-action movie adaptation of this manga. Wikipedia entry on the movie.
There are also various trailers on Youtube: search results

No idea whether this is even relevant, but I was a little surprised by it (and by our timing! The movie was released in December!), so I wanted to share my discovery. ^^
