I actually had a hunch when I heard Kuranosuke's voice for the first time.

"She sounds like a guy..."

End of the episode.

"Oh, it is a guy..."

And he has a good reason for doing what he does too, so he's got my respect. I didn't react that much, since this is rather commonplace in the place where I came from. It actually made the anime a lot more interesting...or rather...he kind of took all of the spotlight in the anime since he is basically the most interesting character of the bunch...

I honestly felt the first episode was a 10 out of 10.
I didn't catch on as quick as the first person who commented but I got the hunch with how much make-up he was watching. The first 4 episodes honestly was really good...but then we got into the actual plot of the show and that is when my attention started to fade away. Not to mention Kuranosuke can get really annoying as a character. I had to pause several times and bang my head into my pillow.

As The discussion continues I'll add more of my thoughts.

Ok

Well let's start by saying that I liked, the style of the show is pretty pleasing and it was easy to watch the whole thing in just one day.
The main characters are interesting, and there's an cool love triangle in the show too hehe

Just like Taro said .. I also thought that that "girl" was a bit weird.. so in the end of episode one.. everything kind explained itself =p

One of the weak points are the side characters, that had potential to be good, since they are pretty different .. train otaku, Oji san otaku, doll otaku hehe they can be funny sometimes still they could've been way better.... and might get annoying at times

The ending is a bit lacking .. there's a lot of room for a second season. Still is a great show 7~8/10 imo... might pick up the manga in the future.

Eh...might as well give my mini review while I'm at it...

Theme: Fashionable Jellyfish

Pros:
  • KURANOSUKE IS THE MAN!
  • Funny characters.
  • Good entertainment value.
  • Never too dramatic. A fun and lightheared anime.
  • Easy to follow and easy to watch.

Cons:
  • Weak supporting characters that served little purpose in the anime.
  • Rushed ending with a scattered plot. Needs more closure.
  • Comedy seems forced at times.
  • Kuranosuke steals all of the spotlight.
  • Poor execution of the "Otaku" concept.
  • Despite not being labeled as a Romance anime, the romance concept was poorly executed.
  • Misleading opening animation.

Best Supporting Character: Kuranosuke Koibuchi.

Lasting Impression:

Tarotist's Testimonial:

A different perspective on the fashion concept, Kuragehime is an anime that clothes itself with a beautiful jellyfish that uses its soft and light tentacles to tickle each episode with humor and fun.

Yeah that is another thing that was disappointing about the anime, the supporting characters.
After episode 4 they never really built up their characters to be anything more than their base value.

Here's my mini-review:

Story: 8/10
Nothing complicated, but it's not like it needed to be anyway. Gave off a similar feeling to Sakurasou, but with otaku, rather than eccentrics. I enjoyed the story with Kuranosuke's brother and the lady whose name I forgot, although I felt that the "romance" at the end was forced. The overall show could have used 2-3 more episodes as the last episodes felt like they were moving too quickly.

Characters:
Main Characters: 8/10 - Kuranoke and Tsukimi are given adequate development and I liked what they had going.
Side Characters: 6/10 - Like people have said, the side characters get no depth or development. Their only character trait is whatever odd thing they obsess over.
Kuranosuke's Brother: 10/10 - Loved this guy. His spontaneous reactions are just too funny.

Art/Animation/Music: 7.5/10
Not bad, but nothing to write home about.

Enjoyment:
1st episode: 10/10 - Jaw was on the floor.
Rest of the Series: 8/10 - I had fun.

Overall: 8/10

i agree that the ending was a little rushed and its mostly due to the fact that there were not enough chapters to actually follow the manga.

It had potential at first, both for its theme and for its comedy. But the comedy got old quite fast, and there's a cruel lack of exciting development and closure.
Tsukimi was super cute though :D On the downside, Mayaya has to be one of the most annoying characters I've seen in anime >.>

So overall, enjoyable enough, but lacking, I give it a 6/10.

lol indeed driver was really funny xD

Hahaha mayaya is the side character that tries the hardest to compensate for the side characters (the ones on the pension at least).
I think it falls on the category that the side characters are lacking.

On the whole, I enjoyed this anime, and I think it was very fun.

I agree that the first episodes were better than the later ones, though. It felt like they weren't following a "proper" storyline and just doing this and that.
And the ending was a bit rushed, too. I don't mind the ending that much though, I just think that if they had added one more minute or so, it could have had a better closure. As it is, it seems a little sudden.

I also think that the side-characters were a little underrepresented. I didn't find them all that annoying, but I can understand why someone would. ^^
Actually, I wasn't that surprised that Kuranosuke is a man. I didn't really suspect it beforehand, but it was like "Oh okay, everything makes sense now".

I didn't particularly take note of any of the music except for the opening and ending songs, which were quite okay, even though they probably won't make it to my top favourites. I really liked the animation of the opening and ending sequences, though.

Overall, I'm still undecided whether to give it a 6 or a 7 as a rating, at the I'm leaning towards the 7, though. It was enjoyable and had a good idea for the plot, but it's also a little flawed to me in some aspects (mostly because the later episodes can't keep up with the first ones).

I thought this was easy to watch. My only complaint is that the ending is incomplete and ended at the height of the conflict. Certain characters were annoying. Even so, I still enjoyed watching this. I gave it a score of 7.

So good I'm not alone with giving the show at 6/10.
It was a 7/10 coming into the final episode but the ending really didn't amount to much but maybe an argument of giving more purpose to the name of the show...but Tsukimi already loved jellyfish to begin with and Kuranosuke already wanted to be a princess. So the cloth brand being named Jellyfish wasn't that big in terms of the meaning of the name of the show.

Then the Otaku Sanctuary was so abruptly saved by the mom coming back. Endings weigh a lot on the show and this didn't really feel like a finale episode. So I had think about it for awhile and I decided to give a full point deduction. If we ever got a season two there might might be more potential to improve or rebound but saying that it has been five years since the show has aired. There is no chance that will ever get a continuation. So thus that is what will left on with this show. Not ending with a bang but with a whimper.

Hmm, the fact that it was refreshing. It wasn't your typical slice of life anime and it didn't have anything to do with high school either, which is a plus. Finally, I liked humor in this one, gave me a couple of laughs. Just a shame that it ended in the "read the manga" way.

The house saving by the mom was really a let down... I mean they did a lot , and in the end it was resolved so easily .. pretty anticlimactic, not only that but makes the "our home is going to be destroyed to become a shopping" things pretty pointless imo... I wonder if it happens like that on the manga too,
maybe it was a bad anime adaptation.

Introduction:
I’m not particularly a fan of “slice-of-lifey” or comedy shows. I usually find it very hard to find slice-of-life that keeps me engaged or have the ability to blow me away. As for comedies, it is quite rare that I find shows that meet my taste in humor.

The very first thing about Princess Jellyfish that caught my attention was the poster: it looks like a manga. This gave me a sense of optimism as I was sure what I was about to go into was going to be unique in a way. Another thing that gave me some assurance about this show was the Josei tag in the information section. After watching the entirety of the show, I can confirm that it is indeed mature and, based off my sense of humor, rather funny.

I would also like to mention that I have never read the manga which this is based off of and anything I say regarding the show is solely based off of what I saw in the anime. Beside, the anime and manga are to completely separate things and should be able to stand on their own.

Story/Plot/Mechanics:
I don’t really like using words like “story” and “plot” for this kind of show because that isn’t what you watch this kind of show for. Granted, there is somewhat of a story but shows like Princess Jellyfish (in my opinion at least) are best enjoyed when watching for the characters. The story itself is extremely simple and that’s how it should be. I’m not going to bother summarizing as anybody reading this should already have seen the show at this point. While the story is nothing to write home about, it does encompass the charm that the rest of the show expresses. The sad and more serious moments of the show are also done well. There was even a moment during one of Tsukimi’s flashbacks that my eyes actually watered-up which was something that I definitely didn’t expect coming into this show.

As for the comedy, I would say it is above average for anime. For me, Nichijou is the king of comedy in anime and is what I use to compare all other comedy. Even though Princess Jellyfish doesn’t spit out jokes as frequently as say Nichijou, the jokes are definitely in the same vein and are just as funny as some of the gags in Nichijou. Thankfully, the show knows when to separate the funny moments and the serious moments perfectly so the identity of the anime is never in question.

Some people may think that this show has a message or deeper meaning behind it. Perhaps something to do with the Sisterhood’s lifestyle or Kuranosuke’s character but for me personally, I don’t think it is there. If anything, I think these kinds of things are in the show simply to intrigue the audience and to birth some originality. I feel that making an argument for much deeper meaning would be bit of a stretch.

Characters:
Koibuchi Kuranosuke is one of my favorite anime character to date. Everything from his cross-dressing, to his “fashionista” side, to his sense of passion for the Sisterhood, I admire it all. I feel like every time he said something, I became more and more in love with his character. When we first meet his character at the beginning of the show, I predicted that he would be arrogant and unaware of his surroundings to the point of making everybody around hate him (the “Cat in the Hat” of the show if you will). Thankfully, that isn’t exactly what happened. Even though the Sisterhood rejected him, it wasn’t because he was a bad guy, it was more to do with the Sisterhood’s closed-mindedness on what they were willing to accept into their own, unusual lifestyle.

Kurashita Tsukimi is also a rather likable and fun-to-watch character. Her characterizations and personality are nowhere near as unique as say Kuranosuke but she isn’t exactly a cookie-cutter character either. Her experiences with her now-deceased mother give her depth and reason behind why she acts the way she does at times (the sense of it all is still a little questionable though). I’m sure that I’m not the only one that thinks this but I would say that Tsukimi is rather cute despite her low self-esteem and constantly referring to herself as ugly. My “Kanbara-Akihito Syndrome” instantly kicks in every time we see her wearing her pair of red under-rims.

As for the rest of the characters, I don’t really have much to say because they were nowhere nearly as developed as our two main characters. I would like to mention that the character designs for the rest of the Sisterhood is rather interesting and that among them, Banba was my favorite.

Visuals and Sound:
The visuals for this show are a breath of fresh air. One of the biggest things that puts me off of a show is a generic or boring art style. The character designs and color palette in this show match the tone of the show perfectly. The pastel colors bring home the sense of calmness and maturity that the show possesses.

The sound effects in the show are believable and and consistent enough to make you feel as if what you are watching is a living and breathing world. The voice acting and casting is also handle well. There is no cliche or annoying “moe voices” that one my hear in a regular comedy show that contains as many female cast members as this one. I’ll discuss the music later on in this reflection.

The Bad:
My biggest problem with the show has to without a doubt be the ending. When I got to the end of episode 9, I was convinced that the creators would manage to make an the ending work and fit well considering how well the rest of the show was handled up until that point. I was wrong. I do however think this has to do with the manga still being incomplete at the time of the anime’s creation but that’s no excuse for a less than satisfactory ending (for any show).

My other big problem with this show was the romance tease. WHY! Why do this to me! If anything, this is what would make me want to read the manga: to find out if the romance goes anywhere. I’m not usually one to obsess over fictional relationships (canon or otherwise) but there was so many cute moments between Tsukimi and Kuranosuke and it makes me wonder why the creators even bothered including them. Also… there was that “almost” kiss that got ruined… uhhgg.

On the character side of things, my only problem was with Inari Shouko. Her personality and characterization definitely seemed the most cliche and least fun to watch. Granted, she did do her job as an unlikable character but I’m pretty sure there could of been more creative ways to do the same job.

The music also didn’t really do much for me. Sure, the opening song was “nice” and definitely fitting for the mood of the show but it wasn’t really catchy and it was something that I wanted to skip over if anything. But, that would of meant that I wouldn’t of gotten to see the great opening sequence that I liked quite a lot. In terms of the soundtrack, nothing really stood out to me. The only time the music caught my attention was when one of the louder songs would kick in when an episode was about to end.

The Verdict:
Princess Jellyfish was a good show and that’s how I’m rating it: a 7/10 based on MAL’s rating system. Despite all the good things going for it and the few bad things that were mostly me nitpicking, the show still remains to be a slice-of-life comedy with a few interesting twists. These kinds of shows never leave me with anything to sink my teeth into and really devour. I do think it is definitely worth the watch as popcorn material that anybody can enjoy.

(I copy and pasted this from a text file that I wrote a few days ago so if anything didn't transfer correctly, I'm sorry)

I also thought at first that Kuranosuke wasn't going to get along with the Sisterhood, but I was pleasantly surprised that they started to get closer, and also, that he was putting some effort into it. As you were referring to whether the show has a deeper message, I agree that a deeper message isn't the point of this show, but you could argue that it is trying to show that you can spend fun/interesting/eventful times even with people of whom you at first thought that they would be dull/superficial/etc., if you get to know them; or that sometimes encounters by chance are the most interesting. (Of course, that's already somewhat farfetched. ^^)

You're right, I didn't think about it before, but the voice acting was really good. Even though they have to handle eccentric/exaggerated situations at times, they manage to make the voices sound believable. (E.g. while Mayaya is speaking in a very overly dramatic way, it doesn't sound artificial, as if the voice actress was trying to exaggerate her way of speaking too much.)

What I didn't quite get was why they kept "switching" between Kuranosuke and his brother. I mean, of course it was because Kuranosuke only realized that he might be in love with Tsukimi because he saw his brother hug her etc., but it still felt a little superfluous. Maybe it becomes clearer in the manga whether and with whom of the two Tsukimi will have a romantic relationship, but seeing as neither option becomes very relevant in the anime, I agree that they could have cut down on these scenes (and the scenes where the characters reflect on them) a little (maybe in favour for some development of the side characters).

I was pleasantly surprised by this anime.
I first came into this show, expecting to drop it, but as soon as it passed around the 3 ep mark, I got hooked on this show.

Story: It started off quite well, ended somewhat disappointingly. I think if this anime had 1 or 2 more episodes, it would have been much better. Still the whole anime felt very easy to watch, and it was nice to watch a show like that after Mousou Diarin, which I found the complete opposite to (really found it hard to continue watching.)

Characters: All the characters were interesting and unique, which is quite hard to find in anime recently. The story was most focused on Tsukimi and Kuranosuke, and I think they were developed very well, Tsukimi, starting off as complete Otaku, who couldn't talk to anyone in public, but grew to have a bit more confidence in herself thanks to Kuranosuke. The latter on the other hand seem to have found a objective he can focus on thanks to Tsukimi and the other inhabitants of Amamizukan.

Music/Art: I like the OP/ED both, and the soundtrack helped layout the story a lot. I thought the animation was going to be horrible, probably because of the coverart of the anime, but it surprisingly maintained a good level of art.

Rated a 7 overall. I think I will definitely continue on the story from the manga, and I'm excited to read what happens next.
