| Ive seen it happen here and there. Out irl and online, in fact on this very forum. Sucking up to other people as if they are somehow more deserving of respect than yourself and usually for very mundane reasons. Ive seen users suck up to other users they decide are better than them. To outright thank them for noticing or commenting on their profile. Do those people really think so little of themselves that they think some other user of an anime site is gods gift and in any better a situation than them. Do they see a confident, buff gorgeous typer on the other side instead of the teenage anime watcher that they most likely are. Why do it, why hero worship here of all places. What exactly do they imagine a 'hero' to be on some back water anime forum to be like irl? are these people really deserving of your respect. Maybe you should turn that desperate worship and turn it inwards. Maybe its time you respect yourself a little more, give yourself some credit instead of putting yourself below some imagine you have in your head of someones online persona. They're not your boss sucking up won't make you. What do you think of sucking up to people. |

Ever noticed users who act like assholes are usually the ones with full comment boxes about how great they are. I choose to believe people suck up because they like to live vicariously through these people who at least appear to be so confident they say how they really feel but in reality are just been asses for the sake of popularity. To say something mean rather than what they really want to say to keep up this persona. Now if you just happen to naturally be an asshole and people like you thats different theres an air of honesty about it but those who act like assholes to be popular and the ones that suck up to them to feel better are defiantly the worst. That goes for the real world too. How many assholes in the workplace get worshiped by the rest of the staff, how many of the school bullies are also the most popular kids in class. Been an asshole gets you admiration, right or wrong seems to be the way of the world. |

| It depends on what you consider sucking up, I for one try to make a point to acknowledge and thank someone who responds to a comment i make in a respectful manner as when online anywhere, respectful comments can be few and far between so i appreciate it when it happens. Now i do not consider that sucking up nor do i consider replying in a respectful manner to a comment sucking up. To me their is a huge difference between showing respect and sucking up. Now if i understand your question and feel free to correct me if i am wrong, you are talking about the people who seem to light up and praise someone specifically because they noticed them, this in my opinion boils down to insecurity in said persons case. Some people do think they are below people based upon their life experiences what ever they might be. I myself don't feel I am above nor below anyone so I cannot speak from personal experience but my understanding is that those insecurities are not easily abolished. I agree that many people should turn praise inwards more and learn to respect themselves as much if not more than others but like many things it can be easier said than done. |

| I just ignore it if it's not my business. But it does annoy me in that moment to see that kind of behavior because you can tell someone is only pretending to be genuine for their own gain. At least it's obvious most of the time, therefore easily dismissible. |
| Sucking up is a necessary social skill to get what you want in the society. No matter where your position is you will have to suck up to society, horrible boss, whiny constituents, even law enforcements and regulators. Nice people are accepted everywhere, it's socially universal. No need to be shy, because even primates does it too. We're social animals after all. |
