Honestly, I'm willing to watch anything that is good, though I do have a few preferences.

Bonuses -
Female lead (biggest bonus)
Lack of guns/mechs (or the MC doesn't use them)
Darker show

Top 5 shows to give an idea of what I like (or look through my list) -
1. Kara no Kyoukai
2. Shinsekai Yori
3. Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan
4. Seirei no Moribito
5. Tied between FMA:B and Hunter x Hunter

All suggestions appreciated. If there is something that you think I have to watch, regardless of my preferences, please mention it.

For the darker stuff, I'd recommend Monster, Gunslinger Girls, and Aoi Bungaku, and even FMA 2003 - a grittier and certainly darker rendition.

As for the good female characters (I see you watched and liked some the best, Saiunkoku, Erin etc), I'd say Rose of Versailles, Ghost in the Shell: SAC (um, she might have a gun though, and mechs), Chihayafuru, Dennou Coil, Emma, Kino no Tabi, Legend of Basara, Otona Joshi no Anime Time, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, So Ra No Wo To, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Taishou Yakyuu Musume, and season 2 of Saiunkoku.

Oh, wow. Thank you for the trove of goodies. I'm sure this will keep me occupied for the foreseeable future.

Akame ga Kill (dark atmosphere but the main heroine uses a sword)
Akatsuki no Yona (not so dark atmosphere but the MC is female and only uses a bow as her weapon)
+1 Code Geass (however there are ALOT of Mechs involved in it)
+1 F/SN UBW
Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis (only swords and magic spells are used from what I remember)
