I think watching the movies first would work as far as understanding goes, but it'd probably be a good idea to start with the series.

if you do watch the TV show just know that they were on a budget so the animation isn't the greatest

Depends. What are you looking for?

A trippy, depressing, psychological series about mecha pilots? (Series)

Or an stylish action-packed mecha series? (Movies)

-Don't watch the rebuild movies.
-Go for the 25 eps + EoE.

*A interesting, first-timer, action drama mixed series about troubled personalities with a lot of religious symbolism, criticism, deconstructive mecha action and a huge fandom, plus Asuka?

*Or an dumb, generic, cliché'd, copypasted, fighting shounen with a standard dumb cast?

You can watch either, the movies are a retelling of the original story with increasingly significant differences.

I'd recommend you to watch the series, though. It is more psychological and less action-packed, so it depends on preference, but it fits the content better.

how I look at it:

Evangelion (TV series + EoE): the psychological side of the coin
Evangelion Rebuild (the movies): the action-packed, more attractive version of the show

No they're not. They're intertwined. Watching the movies before the series would be pointless, if you wanna grasp the meaning of the whole work in itself.

For me the best way is Original serie 24 episodes --> End of Evangelion --> Last 2 eps of original serie

Then the Rebuild series (if you feel like)

Yes they are. They develop through the same basis and try to reach similar plot points. Being a retelling doesn't mean they are a carbon copy, they can diverge and specially as the story grows. I guess it would be fine to talk about them as a remake, though.

I don't disagree with your statement there, but that doesn't make the Rebuilds not a retelling. Just a poorly-structured one if anything.

No, they are not.
Nobody ever officially announced the rebuilds are remakes, and Anno only refers to them strictly as "rebuild". In fact, there are multiple fans who believe these 3+1 movies are time loops set after the TV series. This argument is sustained by a lot of different evidences both in dialogue and imagery, from 1.11 to 3.33.
There are plenty of differences on the script and characters, the time-frame is also extended, which makes this a completely different thing and not a retelling. Someone who only watches the rebuilds will get nothing of the meaning of the story and even less be able to connect the dots when 3+1, eventually, comes out.

Fair enough. It seems I need to rewatch the Rebuilds in a proper mood.
