Just recently, I found out the critically acclaimed film and actually good film "Edge of Tomorrow" was faithfully based off light novel called "All You Need Is Kill". It was written in 2004 and never got licensed to an anime; it only got a manga. That means it's an obscurity on top of being past the oldtaku era of anime. My range for oldtaku goes from 90's to '02.

This surprises me because the studios usually put their money behind stuff like Ghost in The Shell which is well known and from the 90s. Edge of Tomorrow westernizes a lot of stuff and changes the ending, but at least we know that we don't have to have every damn adaptation of Eastern animation be Dragonball Evolution or Priest.

Do we have hope? Are there any series you'd like to see adapted? Directors? Stars?

What is your opinion?

It may not be equal, but it's more likely to be well known if it has an anime adaptation. Also, I'm mainly talking about knowledge and fame outside of the anime community.

Have you heard of this series before?

This is first time I've ever heard the word "Oldtaku". I've come to the conclusion it's a pretty decent word.

Thanks. I didn't make it up on the spot.

Okay, that makes more sense.

Yeah I did. I was actually surprised to learn that Edge of Tomorrow was based on the Japanese novel. I knew about Tom cruise staring the adaptation, but didn't know it was edge of tomorrow until a while after I already watched. I thought it was pretty good movie, especially considering I don't like Tom Cruise.

Maybe it would be a good thing if this becomes a trend, since Hollywood is more capable when it comes to budget, but they often change the writing which is a big no for the fans or completely destroy the series like Evolution. I guess we will see after GiTs happens, but it starting Scarlet Johanson, already has people worried.

The only real problem anyone has with the casting of Scarlett Johansson is the racial disparities of casting a white woman as someone who as far as we know will be Japanese. I'm pretty sure they'll switch something up with that considering what they did with Edge of Tomorrow, but as far as I know it's good casting. Johansson is good at playing smart and sexy at the same time.

Fun fact: The light novel version of All You Need Is Kill was licensed, translated, not Westernized, and released in North America under the title of Edge of Tomorrow as a tie-in. I think I can forgive the title change because All You Need Is Kill is a pretty silly title, but the fact that they kind of treated the source material as marketing and advertising fodder bothers me.

In Japan, the film was released under the title of All You Need Is Kill, so they'd pick it up there, but there wasn't anyone who'd pick it up here as far as I know.

The live-action adaptation of "Recently, My Sister Is Unusual" was pretty much just porn.
(You can find the whole thing uploaded on YouTube too.)

I expect all future live-action ecchi manga or anime to be porn as well.

Furthering my research on this topic, I found an article about this entire thing:

http://www.ew.com/article/2014/11/07/history-anime-hollywood

My research also tells me that George Takei is taking a stand against the legitimately wrong whitewashing of Akira, James Cameron will do Battle Angel Alita after he's done with the Avatar films. There's just tons of anime films that are sitting on shelves and being optioned properties. Maybe Ghost in The Shell will start something big to change it all.

American and Japanese views of Nazism also present a challenge. Japan has no problem with basing character clothing of of SS uniforms. However, the American audience will be seriously uncomfortable being reminded of the Holocaust and concentration camps.

And we still haven't gotten any action from any sort of magical girl adaptation

Another problem is the lack of Asian-American actors to fill Japanese, Chinese, or Korean roles, which is why the script changes and whitewashing exist.

There are some I would like to see adapted:
Read or Die O.V.A.
Night Raid 1931
Black Cat
Rosario + Vampire
Tiger and Bunny
Aria: The Scarlet Ammo
