Personally i'd say i perfer older movies. I blame today's younger and less proficient producers coupled with corporate owned studios that simply seek out a profit through demographics and verified if not over used formulas.

They dumb down today's movies for their own low gratitude of audiences. Through tired recreations of what has already been done; computerized effects overshadowing story line or character development; low brow and vulgar humor; and their steadfast credence that today's audiences will leave a movie disappointed if they don't get to peek through the curtains of someone's bedroom window and watch them have sex.

Nothing changed. Back then there was a lot of shit and nowadays there's still a lot of shit. People who say stuff like new movies suck should look farther than just the Hollywood blockbusters.

I'd say both, but If I had to choose, I'd probably pick older ones for the same reasons as OP.

Although I do appreciate the improved video and sound quality of today's movies - the stories and scripts are getting increasingly trashy.

The most recent Godzilla moive is fucking terrible. There are still great movies being produced these days though

Examples include Avatar, Disconnect, The Machine, District 9, Her, Inception, Oceans 11-13, Silver Linings Playbook, Prisoners, Source Code, etc

Classics are the best.
Especially Studio Ghibli films by Hayao Miyazaki.

Anime is still good now, but old ones are better for me.
It's nostalgic for me that's why. But I also like better graphics from new animes.

What do you mean by "old"? Do you mean the movies from the 80s or the ones from the silent era? Because I can watch both kinds and then simply enjoy The Expendables 3 or the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I'd say it depends, but more or less the older versions are better since new remakes tend to be dumbed down for retarded cgi-starved audiences.

In anime, not that many remakes to even compare. Can't think of one.

Quality is more important than age. If it's good, it doesn't matter to me when it was made. Plenty of bad films were made in ages gone and plenty of bad films are made today. I just hate it when people praise the newer films just because they are new, especially when they don't give older films a fair chance.

I love newer movies because the production never ceases to wow me in the modern greats. That said, that doesnt take anything away from the merit of the classics, that are, well, classics.

I can't effectively answer this question. There's plenty of classics I love in the same way there is a lot of newer stuff that is worth. One of the main advantages of modern cinephilia is that the accessibility of movies has improved a damn lot. The exposition is much higher, not only to films from all ages but to films from all cultures and contexts. And with that, the awareness that cinema doesn't start and end in Hollywood. So arguing a supposed creative low in this industry does not consider the whole. On the other hand this comparison is kind of cheap because it compares generic mass produced stuff with stablished authors, basically because the latter are the ones that trascend. You have the generic slapstick silents, the generic 50s Westerns and the generic 70s exploitation as well, for instance. How many of them are remembered today?

Exactly. Why does it have to be black or white? Each era has bad movies as well as great ones. Who cares when it was made, if it's good? It's like those people bashing all remakes just because they're new, and praising all older films because they're automatically classics, or on the other side, teenagers claiming that "old movies are for old people", "modern graphics are better than anything", etc. Both points of view are one-sided, close-minded, and just plain stupid.

I couldn't chose one over the other because I wouldn't be satisfied with classic movies alone, however there are a few of them I love that far surpass most modern films for me, but on most days I'd rather watch something more recently made. I like a bit of both.

as i pretty much only watch horror movies, so i can only judge on that, and i prefer the older ones way more. i feel like a lot the the new ones are too focused on popup scares, i dont like them, its a cheap trick and doesnt do the job for me at all. i really hate this ghost stuff thats so populair these days. but there are some cool new films too.

i just like old horror movies (70's and 80's) more. i like how they did the special effects and shit back then, even if it looked fake. lots of new movies have shitty special effects too, but obviously made with a computer wich makes them less interesting to see.

I like new and older movies, I've watched quite a few Frank Sinatra movies this year, one yesterday in High Society and I adore them but I also like newer ones.

Although I hate that there are so many remakes, especially when they are remakes of movies no one liked in the first place lol.

I wouldn't say Avatar was a good movie though, when I watched it I hated it. IMO it didn't really have much of a plot and relied on graphics more than anything and I didn't like the big blue aliens much tbh. I thought they looked stupid.

Plus I think the original Frank Sinatra/Rat Pack Oceans 11 was better tbh. Frank Sinatra is amazing <3

It all depends on the movie, really. Compare Pacific Rim or Guardians of the Galaxy to any of the recycled Hollywood flicks and you have already a big difference.

Why not both?

Honestly, the only problems I have with modern movies is the remakes. Stop rebooting old classics and make new classics that a new generation can enjoy. With that being said, I love both old and new films.

Why do people fail to understand that there were just as much shit in the past as there is today. Remember those movies you loved as a kid, they were "dumbed down" so you could understand them and like them.

What nostalgia goggles are we talking about, though? When people talk about classics they generally mean stuff that was at its peak long before they were born. Unless we talk about the 80s-90s nostalgia fandom but I doubt its the case of the OP.

Here's the thing about this though. We only remember the classic movies from a time period so as a result it feels like every movie was amazing back then when they weren't and there were tons of garbage films. Starting at the 70s onward I guess(I don't like super old movies) all the time periods are really almost equal.

WOW you obviously dont know very much about how old movies were made, bc this pretty much sums up the 40s/50s completely. after 1934 and before the 60s movies were essentially just products. they werent even really considered high brow for the most part. the only reason they seem better is bc most likely any movie you could name from back then is literally one of the best movies made in that decade. in the golden age of hollywood they were making, like, 400 movies a year. most of those movies dont even exist anymore bc they were god damn awful and nobody cared about them. stfu about how great old movies are if youre not actually interested in researching how things were in the biz back then. its 100000x easier to make creative movies now a days, thats just a fact.

i prefer new movies since i like that people are allowed to make interesting and creative things now without being censored up the ass.

There's an unwritten rule on the internet:

Everything old is better, this applies to everything in entertainement: movies, music, game, anime, tv shows, books, etc.

It officially became a fact

How old is old? If we consider anything pre-2000 old then I'd have to go with older titles simply because they had a kind of novelty to them that I feel like newer films lack. The horror genre in particular really reflects this. Older horror films didn't rely on CGI and explosions, but rather costumes and props that captured a truer feeling of horror. Needless to say, there are still things that older films have done wrong or were unable to do, which is no different than with modern film.

I think good movies are better, regardless of when they were made.

The notion that older is better is a combination of the well-documented nostalgia bias and the fact that the crappy older movies aren't as accessible as crappy new ones. But if you think they aren't there in droves, you've never counted the number of MST3K episodes!
