Is 50 shades of grey only popular because men can't arouse their women?

I'm sure we've all heard of this book, it's very good at two things. One being that it is absolutely horribly written in style, content, story, creativity and any resemblance of quality, the last one with the exception of its capability for arousal, this is where number two comes in, making your old lady moist.

This brings me to ask a number of resulting questions that may need some pondering.

1: if these lady's men did their job in the sack would this book even have sold a dozen copies? Since that is what it provides, fills that void if you know what I mean.

2: is this book contributing negatively to population growth? Since it no doubt discourages sexual inter course by giving the ladies another direction for excitement that does not include the semen bearing man, self play.

3: will it breed or enhance the scope of today's current rape culture? Since men will be more desperate for that which has been cock blocked from them by a hundred or two badly written pages, which may or may not be as effective for a woman's needs (this falls beyond the scope of this discussion).

Thoughts?

50 Shades of grey is popular because women have unrealistic expectations in men when it comes to sex and other things as well. No it won't breed or enhance rape culture.

Maybe mostly single women are reading the book.
I probably regret this post by now.

Perhaps the book is encouraging that distortion women have in expectations as well. But I dont think it is the initial cause.

No, because women find erotic literature fun and they tend to be more cerebral about their fantasies.

it surely does have some sort of ripple effect. Denying mayor implications it may or or already has had without some sort of discourse on their validity is in my opinion a little short sighted

It's the reading and fantasy thats a turn on, not the actually stupid scenarios.

Like, when i'm reading stupid romance books i'm just enjoying the reading and getting into the intimate thoughts that occur. I dont really care about how silly they might be. It adds to the titillation, because i'd probably laugh if anything like that happened in real life.

That may be a factor but keep in mind 50 Shades was originally a Twilight 'lemon' (sex) fanfiction that went viral. So women who were obsessed with the Twilight franchise moved to this also because of the similarities between the male MCs. But then that brings a discussion to the mirroring of the abuse that both that the female characters experienced. Some women who read 50 Shades want a dominant man that tells you what you can and can't do.

That being said; 50 Shades was a terrible book on BDSM. The author herself -- it sounds like she didn't read the basic wikipedia page for BDSM. A contract to keep the girl in line? No use of the safe word? It was shit. Sure, some scenes were steamy but the two characters were like rabbits on a ravaging sex fest. I guess women who read it wanted the passion they felt from the steamy scenes.

Ahh. I've heard about the book being a fanfic of twilight at first but I just never saw the connection since I'm not familiar with either works. All I knew were that Twilight had vampires and 50 Shades of Gray didn't(I think). But now I understand why the thing fanfic got viral.

Also, there could be the factor of people finding out about bdsm in literature for the first time, similar to how Boku no Pico went viral. The gist of that is, a couple of people find out about a particular fetish found in a piece of work, think it's absolutely perverted and strange, and show it to other people who aren't familiar with the genre of work.

Exactly. Well it's more so, the people who find out about the fetish want to explore it and experience it. Just like how on Tumblr, most of the anime blogs I reblog (female anime blogs) tend to like the DDLg scene and that perked my interest in BDSM. 50 Shades isn't a good bridging into the BDSM community if they want to get into it... for the reasons I put in my first post. It simply is 'what you can experience in a BDSM relationship if you find an abusive partner'.

Women like to read to feel and imagine what the sex scenes are like-- they can stretch their imagination to however they want their sexual fantasy to be-- so they read erotic literature. Men however are more visual and like porn because it's quick and easy to jack off to.

It may be, but it is proven with a study that men are more visual and women stick to other senses to fill the gap for sexual stimulation.

This is all pseudoscience supported by the patriarchy. Genders are a social construct, all people are equal.

Yet all are still different when it comes to how things turn them on and how they affect the person. There may be exceptions to the generalization I put up but that doesn't escape the fact that literotica is more dominated by the female community and there are plenty of porn websites that males can go for their interests.

This series is read a lot by teenage girls who have unrealistic expectations and think that the male protagonist is the dream-boyfriend just because he is rich and handsome. I don't know about older women, but I don't think they would get it too seriously. At least I hope. Also, many people buy it out of curiosity, just to see if it really sucks and why.

2: I don't think so.

3: It won't enhance rape culture. Most probably this series will soon be forgotten, at least after everyone realises how shitty it is. Women are reading it for fun, not because they want to have something similar.

I imagine most women who read 50 Shades of Grey are single/not sexually active.

wallflowers said:

I haven't read the book, but how are either of these points relevant? Sometimes safe words aren't needed, and a contract doesn't exactly change much.
