"Ragyou's Tragic Tale"
A KILL la KILL THEORY

Spoilers for KILL la KILL Episode 21 & Onwards

__________________________________________________

First of all, I must apologize - since I know that after this latest episode, nobody wants to feel bad for Ragyou. Hell, I don't want to feel bad for Ragyou. If you're alright with feeling bad for what may be the worst mother/parental figure in all of anime, please keep reading. I'd love to hear all of your thoughts.

This theory is based around the fact that Life Fibers can alter memories and thoughts - to the point of rewriting all of Ryuuko's memories in Episode 21.

What if Ragyou has been under these effects of indoctrination for the last 20 years of her life?

What if she honestly believes that she was a good mother, and is simply trying to reconnect with them, blind to what the Life Fibers don't want her to see?
__________________________________________________

Revealed Plot

Let's start at the beginning. Life Fibers - a type of symbiotic life form - came to earth while mammals were still evolving. These life forms coated the most advanced species of mammal on the planet at the time - early humans - and sped up our evolution into what we are today.

During this symbiotic evolution of both our minds and bodies, they implanted in us the emotion of "embarrassment," which came into effect when we no longer retained the fur of our ancestors. This emotion led us to clothing ourselves in fabrics and furs laced with the Life Fibers to continue the symbiotic relationship they so desperately wanted to continue.

Fast forward millions of years, and the Kiryuuin family has found the "Original Life Fiber," the core of the original fibers which had come to earth so many millions of years earlier.

Theorized Plot

At this time, a younger Kiryuuin Ragyou starts hearing whispers in her head. She starts to go into fashion, feeling it may be a good fit for her, even though she has no past experience with clothing or design. She thinks the whispers will go away with time, but they don't.

The whispers get louder.
They make her bolder.
They give her ideas.

Soon enough, she's created a brand for herself with those ideas. Revocs. What an odd name; it "just came to her," she says.

Her brand grows, and grows, and grows - soon enough it becomes known worldwide. Being a young woman by now, she has eligible partners lining up out the door for the chance of her hand in marriage. She meets Souichirou.

The whispers get louder once more.
They tell her its love.
She cant ignore them anymore.
They must be her subconscious, she thinks.

She marries him.

Eventually, she gives birth to a lovely little girl she named "Satsuki." She, Souichirou, and Satsuki have a wonderful life together for their first year, as a family.

She personally goes out to buy a crib for her newborn daughter.
She and Souichirou even work on decorating it together.
She even designs the blankets with the cutest designs she can think of.

Everything's happy - they're a family. A happy, joyous family.

But one day - after singing Satsuki to sleep like they always do, Souichirou seems different.
He talks a bit less, but tells her he's fine.
She tells herself he must just be overworked, and lets him doze off by Satsuki's crib while she heads to bed.

"Everything's fine. I'll make him breakfast in the morning~" she says.
Her life has turned out so well, she can't help but be happy as she heads to sleep.

One year passes, and they add another child to the family, little "Ryuuko."
Souichirou picked out the name - she couldn't help but stifle a giggle at how odd it sounded.

Everything's happy - they're a family. A happy, joyous family.

Until one day.

Souichirou says he's leaving her.
She doesn't know why.
They've always been such a happy family together.
He says he's leaving the kids with her.

How could he leave them alone without a father?
Why now?
They'd just sang little Ryuuko to sleep - just last night!

"You don't need him." her subconscious cries out.
She listens.

After a while, she calms down. She needs to be strong for her girls.

She calls Souichirou's voice mail to leave a good-bye message.
There's no answer.

She steels herself and prepares to be as good a mother as she can be to her two daughters.

Getting what little sleep she could, she wakes up the morning and already finds herself back on her daily routine - first step, check on the girls.

Satsuki is asleep in her crib - as usual. She's a heavy sleeper - she tells herself.

Little Ryuuko is... Not there. She panics. She had just started crawling recently, she may have gotten out!

She calls her butlers and has them look around for her.

No luck. Souichirou must've taken her.

A year passes.
Two.
Three.
More.
There's no word or sightings of the two.

Satsuki's all grown up now. She's 18.
She raised her all by herself.

"You did a good job." she hears.
She can't help but nod.

Satsuki visits her, every now and then.
Satsuki's decided to become class president at the school she founded.
It makes her proud to see her daughter follow in her footsteps.

Whenever Satsuki finds free time, she comes home to tell her mother about the new things she's learned, and how things are going.

She can't help being overprotective of her when she visits.
She may be 18, but she's her precious daughter after all.
She has to take care of her.

One Day.

She visits the school.
It's the day of their Sports & Culture festival.

She cant wait to see the festivities and meet her daughter's friends.

She greets the little girl Satsuki befriended in pre-school,
Nonon.

She sees the half-american boy whom Satsuki befriended in middle school,
Gamagoori.

She sees her computer class mate,
Inumutua.

As well as her Kendo Club sempai,
Uzu.

She smiles happily at them as she passes them in order to stand beside her daughter at the opening speech for the first event.

Nothing prepared her for what happened next.

Satsuki slapped her.
She slapped her infront of everyone there.
Her own mother - who did nothing but love her.

She begins to cry.
She feels tears run down her face, down her cheeks.
Down her chin.

"Hey! Stop that, Satsuki Kiryuuin!" shouts some female voice from within the crowd.

She looks up - she sees a girl with black hair, a disheveled look, and a red highlight in her hair

Through all the tears, she could swear it was her. It looked just like she remembered her.

"Ryuuko..? Is that you..?"

"It's her." the voice inside her says.

"My daughter..."

Reasoning

First of all, sorry about the long text. I meant to make the theory more "normal" - but I got carried away and it ended up like a fan-fic. Anyway, the first thing that tipped me off to this possibility was the lyrics of "Blumenkranz," which in German, means "Floral Wreath." Blumenkranz is Ragyou's theme. One that plays almost every time she is on screen, to a tee.

Secondly, with episode 21 taking the turns it did - it raised the question of how far the powers of Life Fibers go. They were able to ENTIRELY erase and replace Ryuuko's memories. They replaced them with memories she's wished for since she was born. She's always wanted a normal family, but never had one. The Life Fibers were able to completely and utterly "rewrite" Ryuuko into Ragyou's faithful daughter.

Thirdly, they spoke in episode 18 about how nobody else even saw COVERS, due to the fact that the Life Fibers were devouring all unnecessary information in their brains. Tsumugu said it best with his quote: "They have eyes but they fail to see, and ears but fail to hear, huh?"

Add all of the above 3 facts, and what do you get?

Life Fibers can indoctrinate those who are not already immune to them - making them see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear, and do what the Life Fibers want them to do.

What do you all think?

Any plot theory that tries to make the antagonist into a character we should pity is shit. I hope Trigger shits all over people who want Ragyou to have been 'good all along' by making her just as evil as the Life Fibres.

TL/DR (i actually read it >.> )

I agree. Ragyou is probably possessed herself. It's like in a RPG where you think the main villain is the final boss but then you get something above him.

An interesting theory, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be true. The Life Fibers' uncanny ability to alter minds can certainly possess Ragyo. In addition, what made Ragyo the spokesperson for the COVERS? Did she put herself in that position or did the Life Fibers possess her and use her as their pawn?
Powerful eyebrows.

Thank you for your constructive opinion.

At this point - it would be really well done if they only revealed it after she's been defeated. Maybe have the illusion fade in her dying moments, without the girls realizing she was ever being controlled.

Also Ryuko's flashback, despite being fictional, shows Ragyo acting like a loving mother. That could also be another hint at the type of person Ragyo could have been.

Ragyou will have been using the Life Fibres to do what she wants all along. She's quite obviously the brains of the operation.

If life fibers are capable of rewriting memories then maybe Ragyou's ambitions were artificially created. Her ambitions are the life fiber's.

Also don't the life fibers have a parasitic relationship with living things and not a symbiotic one?

It's likely that they saw she came from a powerful family, and used her as a pawn because of that high "jump off" point.

Also, yes - I'll fix that. They are parasitic, not symbiotic.

All Ragyou wants is love. If you look at Ryuko's memories, Ragyou was the best mom ever, all the way to Ryuko's future wedding. Satsuki is just an evil child that needs discipline.

Seriously though, I could definitely see Ragyou pulling the "I was brainwashed card" or "I did it all for you my daughters" when Ryuko and Satsuki are about to give her the justice she deserves.

I kind of like Ragyou bad to be honest, though from Ryuuko's behaviour at the end of ep 20 your theory makes it seem like a possibility.

Ragyo's vileness fits her character though. I can't imagine her ever being good (despite using my imagination a couple of threads ago).

Even if we were to go faaaar back into her past it seems like Ragyou would have developed a world-wariness at an early age.

Kinda like her two daughters, actually. Like mother like daughter as they say and despite being our heroines Ryuuko and Satsuki aren't exactly innocent people either.

Yeah, I see it but I don't wanna see it.

I'm kind of not understanding. But it was a good fan-fic read.

I love Ragyo. She's beautiful and elegant, I just have a "thing" for evil female villains, especially if they're dressed well.
I don't know how the anime is going to play out, I don't know how they're ever going to kill Nui or Ragyo.

But if Ragyo turns out to be the good guy, OR if she actually kills everyone and the anime dies, that would make me happy. Let's have a not-happy-ending anime.

I sort of understand your theory, Ragyo MIGHT be possessed by the life fibers that took over her causing her to do all of that.

@Candeloro

Pretty much, the idea is that the Life Fibers may be controling her mind and changing what she sees/hears, and therefore how she acts.

Instead of a chamber to experiment on Satsuki, she saw a Crib.
Instead of experimenting on her, she sang her to sleep.
Etc, etc.

I feel like it would be extremely bittersweet if her death releases her from her "Life Fiber Dream World."

It's not too far fetched - and it fits with comments from TRIGGER about the ending being bitter sweet, as well as the lyrics of Blumenkranz.

But then if this theory is true, what about the life fibers themselves? Where did they come from and what is their intention? I know they're from space but... like, is there a sentient life fiber leading all of this? Why do strings of thread want to rule the world?

Also, I don't recall, I don't remember if the anime explained it or not, but how did Ragyo turn into a life fiber being anyways? All I know is she passed it on to her daughters.

Anyways, the way this anime was total mindfuckery and plot twist-y I don't think they're gonna go for a conventional ending. Conventional would be like... Matoi and Satsuki fight for 10 mins, Mako comes in and snaps her out of her berserk state again, Senketsu helps, then they both team up to kill Ragyo/Nui and they succeed.

Regarding how she changed.. She has many, many scars along her back. Ryuuko only has one, and it's under the hair on the back of her head - back from when the fibers were planted into her.

Now.. Imagine how far Ragyou or the Fibers went when changing Ragyou. She has many scars along her back, some up to 5x bigger than the one made to change Ryuuko.

So far, it's been revealed that the life fibers wanted to strengthen us, to lead us to the top fo the food chain and such - but we don't know why yet. (As of Episode 21.)

We don't know if it healed or not - considering that it's a place that's covered by her hair.

I don't think this theory could be true...

It makes a great deal of sense though. I wonder if they're going to explain her scars in the 24th episode...

However I can't really think of why the Life Fibers would choose someone like Ragyo to carry out their operation. She's apparently an ordinary mother without any skills, not to mention they could've taken control of someone like Soichiro, who was far more intelligent than her, considering he created Senketsu and the Scissor Blades.

Well.. Seeing how simple they've made all other explanations in the series.. I don't know if this will happen at the end of Kill la Kill anymore..

The show is good, and has great style.. But depth is not its forte.

Hence why I'm giving it an 8.

Ah well, let's see what happens.
