So a few years ago I saw the cat returns. Then a while later I saw another anime with a reference to that anime, this old guy had the same figure as the baron (I cannot remember the name of the movie). It literally only just occurred to me. I see there is some kind of relation, but can someone explain it?

Yes, The movie you are thinking of is another Ghibli movie called "Whispers of the Heart"

Whispers of the Heart came out in 1995 and The Cat Returns came out in 2002.

I like to think of "The Cat Returns" as the story that the girl in "Whispers of the Heart" wrote.
