I’m not exaggerating for comedic effect - each entry here was released during WWII and is the literal definition of military propaganda.

As stated by the Oxford English Dictionary, “Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.” As you will see, everything below fits into said definition.

While perhaps some more modern examples of military animation could warrant inclusion here, so as not to stir any unnecessary controversy, I have decided upon only the most undeniable examples of propaganda. At least for the purposes of this stack, I am defining ‘WWII’ as 1937-1945 since that’s how long the war was from a Japanese/Chinese perspective.

Silhouette animation is created by backlit shadow puppets. Shadow plays have existed for centuries, but on film it is a form of stop-motion. The effect is usually created with paper cutouts, which is why it is often considered a subgenre of cutout animation.

These stacks are meant for cataloguing every stop-motion animation on Myanimelist. The list is the result of research by the Stop-Motion Animation Appreciation Society:

https://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=16200

Stop-motion is a form of animation in which objects are manipulated little by little while each frame is shot separately. Puppet animation is the most common, but before 1935 cutout animation was also very common. Among other types are claymation, pixilation (now removed from the database), object and model animation. In this list also works using sand, charcoal or paint are included, since in the form they've been accepted to MAL, they also include gradual manipulation and shot by shot filming.
