Fang of the Sun Dougram has a handful of parallels to the original Mobile Suit Gundam series but in return, the execution and storytelling is tighter, more detailed, and more mature. Not to say Gundam is bad! But if you want a real Gundam for adults? Dougram is it. Classic Ryosuke Takahashi rocks.

While LOGH is in a league of it's own, Dagram has a mature story with deep intrigue which steps into a political realm with some intersting criticism and actual real feel in which few anime series dare to go. If you're into a bit of a mature storyline and don't mind the physics innacuracies or older animation, do give the other show a try.

Both shows were directed and heavily influenced by the late Takeyuki Kanda, who worked on Dougram together with Ryosuke Takahashi. The 08th MS Team is well-known for it's realistic approach on war, the insight in the everyday life of the soldiers, the relationships between the characters . Dougram has it all and adds politics, drama as well as battle tactics. The animation is outdated, but Dougram manages to present 75 well-paced episodes, combined with a huge cast and a detailed story. While Gundam 0079 was the first anime to introduce the concept of real robots, Dougram was the first one to combine robots, war and  read more

They are the most strategic mecha shows. Both are real robot shows with strong worldbuilding, politics and tactics. Both are stories of revolution for independence. Code Geass is a great show, very entertaining and with a good story, but Fang of the Sun Dougram is way more mature and profound, with a more complex and rich story and a lot more realistic. It gets old but is a strong similar anime to Code Geass.

I think Fang of the Sun Dougram and the Patlabor franchise are the most realistic mecha shows ever made. They show a very realistic use of mecha, and a realistic mecha design, very humans characters, and a focus on political aspects. Patlabor 2 is the most similar to Dougram thanks to the serious tone, more politics than usually in the franchise, and the war themes.

AKA Fang of the Sun:Dougram. Same director, same focus on realism, characters, and story than on selling toys. The Revoltech action figures are still pretty boss.

Mecha shows? More like hard/sci-fi. Fang of the Sun Dagram marks the directorial debut for Ryosuke Takahashi [edit: under Sunrise], widely known for his successful Votoms franchise. Votoms and Dougram (along with Layzner and potentially Galient) are probably the most serious, grittiest, mature, 80's mecha series out there. While Dougram is far more political, dialogue heavy, and loaded with a bigger cast, whereas Votoms focuses more on Chirico's journey - both shows put a heavy emphasis on detail, whether it be plot or action related with the gritty mech's, and they're just generally mature and -manly- shows all around. These are shows that even  read more

I believe Eureka Seven took inspirations to Dagram with the similar settings, both main protagonist are willing to became to achieve their goals to become rebels to society and became freedom fighters and willing to pilot a mechas
