Every once in a while, a much-awaited sequel to a popular anime comes out and baffles the audience with unwelcome anime-original story changes coming as a result of diverging from the original author's style and vision.

Or, in a similar vein, the IP holder decides it's time to resurrect a story that was by all means finished (or close enough to it) with a completely unnecessary sequel or side-story that fails to live up to the original and makes the whole franchise worse just by existing. Even worse if it retcons the original to invalidate a major dramatic plot point just so that the sequel could happen.

In either case we're left with something that many fans will plead you to pretend it doesn't exist, and honestly... you should probably listen to them.

This list doesn't include manga/LN adaptations that started diverging from the original storyline already in their respective first (or only existing) seasons.

This list also doesn't include sequels that people actually asked for but they ended up horribly made (i.e. Berserk 2016, One-Punch Man S2).

It obviously doesn't include sequels that adapt bad source material without changing it (e.g. Food Wars S4 onwards); while a caring adaptation team will sometimes try to remedy the faults of the source, it's not expected of them to do so.

Fate and Gundam franchises aren't included simply because I just can't pick anything in particular from their enormous(-ly bloated) universes as an example of something unnecessary. You aren't losing anything by ignoring most of them.

See also the counterpart to this list: Sequel f'n when? It's been years! https://myanimelist.net/stacks/2347

This list constitutes my personal views and stances. If something isn't on it, it likely means I haven't seen it or don't have an informed opinion on the matter. Feel free to shoot me suggestions via DMs, but make sure you have a convincing argument if it's not something that's already on my main manga/anime list. I don't promise it'll end up here, but I will consider all suggestions.

Sequels that had a considerably worse reception than the first/previous seasons.

The most common causes is continuing a story that fans considered completed or a bad/rushed adaptation.

Not including reboots/remakes/alternative versions.
Not including airing seasons nor seasons from less than 2 seasons old after airing.
Not adding sequels that had a score higher than its direct prequel, no matter if its score is lower than the first season, for example:

S1: 8.5 S2: 7.4 S3: 7.6
In this case I won't add the third season.
Not adding inter-season OVAs either but adding sequel specials meant as finale.

This is NOT based on my personal opinion although I might leave it here but it won't have any influence on the scale.
This list is MAL's score-based.
With "best" season I refer to the season with the highest score.
Difference must be more than 0.50 points unless next season of a previous one that was put here has a lower score of more than 0.1

If You are confused with the wide range on generic anime in here I will tell you this stack is developed based on the wholesomeness and complete enjoyment which consists of a beautiful storytelling to demonstrate the depth of the anime. Each anime has beautiful visuals and a complete story without unnecessary cliffhangers..

Reboots and remakes of pre-existing anime/video games that are generally negatively received by critics and their own communities. You’re more likely to enjoy these if you’re not a fan of the original media.

This stack applies to anime that had an anime/video game adaptation beforehand. If a manga adaptation is included here, it’s because another anime adaptation existed prior to the current one (e.g. Promised Neverland)

Anime that lists Shouji Kawamori as Mecha/Mechanical Designer. Several sources outside of MAL such as Anime News Network and his JP Wikipedia page were used to make this list.

If an entry has more details than just "Mechanical Design", it will be noted on the first line of the description. Any entries listed within any descriptions will be note the extra details right after the closing parentheses, if not its simply listed as "Mechanical Design".

This list will move several entries into the description when the stack becomes full.

Contact me if there are mistakes or additional anime that lists him as such.

from the animelon 'about' page:

"Learning a language can be difficult; often times it is boring and tedious, so we want to help the language learning community by providing a more entertaining and engaging way to learn. The idea of Animelon is to provide interactive tools that assist users in learning Japanese as they watch anime. If you love watching anime, why not make more out of the time spent?"

this is part of a series of stacks on the japanese-language-learning-focused anime streaming site animelon. the anime are listed first in order of difficulty ranking according to JPDB, from the easiest (level 1) to the most difficult (level 10), and then by MAL members of the earliest season listed. I will include include all seasons, entries etc. that are available on animelon, with notes that include information on other series entries.

Anime featuring mainly traditionally animated, hand drawn robots made between the year 2010 and now. As by this point in time, they had become a rarity in favor of CGI robots, I think this list would be really helpful.

Note: the Gundam Build shows get excluded because those are plastic models, not robots.
