I was going to reference full alchemist brotherhood but I see you allready have it in your list Well If I was to rank dark series that are among my favorites or top 5 I would go with the following (I also took account of what you disliked with devil man for these recommendations).
1. Parasyte -the maxim- (anime series) - its not my top anime but I gave it ten based on how good I thought it was would say this would be my best recommendation for you based on what I read from your devil man review. I would love to discuss this one with you if you ever end up watching it.
2. Berserk golden age - (Berserk Movies followed by Manga) - Berserk is my top series and is the number one manga here on MAL but if I was to pick any berserk anime to recommend it would be the 3 golden age arc movies. The movies are based on the first 60 chapters out of 300 of the manga which is the backstory and tragedy of the main character guts who in the present is a demon hunter. The movie has really decent animation. There is a sequel to the movies in the form of a anime series called berserk 2017 but I would recommend read the manga instead as those anime's where done by a different studio who did not do a good job adapting it and replaced most of the voice cast. Guts the main character is also my favorite unlike akira guts learns from mistakes and figure how to beat his enemies after tragedy occurs and unlike Akira who loses everything Guts after tragedy is not without hope and is able to achieve his goals. Berserk yes is one of the darkest stories in Manga but it does try not and be despair porn and allows the good and the bad flow naturally and realistically.
3. Tokyo Ghoul (Anime and Manga) - This is what I would call a awkward recommendation because I am recommending both. I would recommend watching the Anime first and then reading the Manga. The reason for this is the Anime and the manga have a different second half and ending with anime missing a few arcs and character arcs. You will watch the anime and probably love it and give it a great rating then you read the manga and say the anime sucked. There is new anime based off the sequel manga called :re coming out but it will be based off the mangas ending not the anime as it looks like they are trying to stick to the canon. I am a fanboy for this series as you can tell from my profile but this series has a load of great characters which include a main character that goes through a lot of changes. I am not sure how the story will end but the current arc in the sequel manga might decide it soon. Just a warning this series is a tragedy but the sequel can be described as a heroic epic (tragic hero tries to beat tragedy and succeeds) hopefully as one character hinted. Like parasyte I would like the hear your thoughts on this one if you ever try it.
4. Fate/Zero - Unlike the other ones I recommended this series does not follow one character but fourteen who are competing as duos a mage and servant in a free for all for the holy grail. Its also the first entry for anyone who wants to try the fate series. The animation is also god tier and this anime has a brilliant sequel series called fate unlimited blade works. If you like this fate anime and want to watch the continuations I can give you a list of which to watch.
5. Ajin - not in my favourites but its really good and I think its up your alley.
Hello read your Devil Man Review found it a good read. Just note as someone who has watched more anime series this one had one of the most depressing endings I have seen (probs the most). The original mangas run was for a year as far as I know so good thing for that.
I could recommend some other dark series that might be more up your alley if your interested.
I just read your Devilman review and I feel like saying something to you.
I think that most of Devilman's issues came the fact that it is only 10 episodes and rushed pacing.
If the show had like 2, 3 or 4 more episodes then the show could have spent more time on things like the relationships between the characters (especially the bond between Akira and Ryo).
