The Strange Tune

What an episode!

There was some pretty awful animation at the start, but the rest of the episode definitely made up for it.

Let's see, we have

- A Space Shuttle/Castle exiting and entering the atmosphere
- Lupin in drag
- A one-eyed Fujiko impersonator
- A parody of Michael Jackson's Thriller
+ Much, much more!

Was that Fujiko imposter controlling the birds? I thought they were just symbolic at first, until I saw the one towards the end.

Well, that didn't make a lot of sense, right to the end.

I just watched it and I think you just see what you want to see

But she was already dead by then

In which...a lot of dark and weird stuff happens. Seriously this episode threw more for a serious loop. I was as dumbfounded as Lupin. Even the ending, I didn't really get any of it except it took way too long to realize that the real Fujiko only appeared at the very end...I think? I dunno, here's a random double Zenigatas screengrab, he hasn't had one in awhile:

This was really one heck of truly strange episode and definitely feels out of place from start to end. I haven't understood much but found quite fascinating to watch whatever things happened.

EDIT: if anyone curious why this was so strange its thanks to different script writer worked on this ep- Seijun Suzuki who is known oddball filmaker making non-sequitur plot, surreal scenes, and baffling ending as far I've researched. Interesting. Sadly I think he wrote only one episode out of fifty. I really would have love to see more like this ambiguous Lupin episode tbh.

悪のり変装曲 = evil transformation.. right?

Did Lupin just eat a raw meat from the bird?
Haha thanks for the fanservice, Lupin

What's with that ending?
I mean I'm ok if this is mystery anime, but this is not what Lupin's ending looked like

This episode was so weird, and not in a good way. Space, a war, Zenigata inventing stuff, a suicidal madame, Lupin killing a crow with his bare hands and then eating it raw, that passageway to the castle... What was the deal with those crows anyway? That ending with the red eyes and stuff was a bit unsettling too. lol

Right from the start the weirdest Lupin episode I've seen and till the end it didn't disappoint. But in a way more entertaining than some of the mediocre ones.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Yes, a strange episode. Considering the space travel, the appearance of the one-eyed woman might have been a reference to Captain Harlock.

I'm losing love for the series fast. The animation is still okay, but I agree now with the reviews that said this is more cartoonish. And by that I mean it looks more like western animation intended for children, with lots of slapstick and chasing. The plots are similar to how they used to be, but they're presented differently. I also don't care for the soundtrack, and I'm getting tired of that descending mystery sound used in almost every episode.

And yet, even though it's mostly cartoonish silliness, we had a character kill herself. This is something that baffles me in anime every now and then, when I can't figure out the correct audience, the presence of humor that makes it look like it's for children, yet with dark themes that children would find disturbing. Lupin has always been inconsistent in this sense, some episodes being safe for 7-year-olds to watch, others much more mature. But for example this episode was trying to be both, which made it all the more strange.

The franchise portrays exhaustion really well, and this time around, it applies to Lupin in the beginning. He isn't knocked out with drugs or a tranquilizer here. He's just tired from a hectic encounter. Such a thing is nice to see once in a while.

It won't be the last time; he has yet to meet the Tarantulas again.

Ah, fever dream, got it.
Opinions are opinions, and differing opinions can co-exist. 🙂 But I don't do debate, life's too short to spend time debating people.

You know I thought the last episode with the suits within suits thing etc was weird. This though was totally crazy, somewhat good but total lunacy for sure. I'm leaning towards a literal fever dream for Lupin but who knows lol

More like he was possessed by Mr. Flibble (I know this show preceded Red Dwarf by a few years).

I'm convinced the film 'The Mission' stole imagery from this episode.
