for the most part, i felt a little bored by this movie
having already seen NGE the series, about 80% of the movie was just a complete redoing, but with more up-to-date animation. i can at least tell it's going to definitely lead into an entirely new direction from the series after this first movie, which is a definite plus.

did anybody else note how the evas have human hands? i thought that might be important to the plot later on...i mean, in the series, they just had alien-looking hands...
and is it just me, or do they evas in this series sound retarded? i definitely remember a more haunting sound from the series...and shinji too--his screams were definitely more psychotic in the series...
sigh.

Amazing movie. The animation is nice and it's cool that it's not following the anime exactly.

If you ask me, this is what an anime movie should be. Fast-pace, great direction and a perfect mix of action and character development. What I always loved about Evangelion was the frightening realism of its characters and how their emotions could be felt, especially their feelings of despair and hopelessness. The story is very disturbing, and in this movie (so far), it didn't change much, but it was beautifully done nevertheless.

In the art department this movie was incredible... the work they did with the 6th angel (the geometric one) was simply mindblowing, it really makes you feel that there's no way an abnormality like that can be destroyed.

I'm really looking forward the next movies, this is reviving Evangelion with a breath of fresh air, an epic comeback. I can't wait to see the shadow angel!

God DAMN! Been so long since I watched the original TV Series and this one now just came to remind me how awesome Evangelion is! I liked it how it stayed true to the series plot and it was quite refreshing with the top notch animation, direction and production.

It's all I wanted to see and then some! Actually, it has surpassed my expectations by far!

boring movie. Horrible music that annoyed me to no end. I felt that the old TV series was better and I did not really like that TV series at all.

I gave the old series 6 so I guess 5/10 for this movie

I kinda understand how Shinji feels I mean, of course everyone will be scared to suddenly pilot eva. Anyways it was great. 9/10 :3

Do they have to waste so much time on Shinji in a remake? Rei would have guaranteed more horny lonely otakus.

The guy just pisses me off with why me why me every 5 minutes loved the first battle thou when his Eva or him went psycho.

Third Angel was great if only he wasted Shinji the first time I would have gave it 9 instead of 7.

So, they took the show, updated it with modern animation and sound, took out most of Shinji's unnecessary whining and bitching emo moments, and gave us 1 and a half hours of awesomeness. I like =) Especially liked the battle with the blue octahedron...the updated visuals really did that one some wonders.

One small complaint though would be that the mystery and intrigue of the original plot is somewhat being lost, such as the nature of Adam (rather Lilith) being revealed this early on, whereas in the TV series things were unclear until around the last 5 episodes. But, I guess this is a necessary sacrifice to streamline the story.

Can't wait to watch 2.0

I really liked this movie. I just finished the TV series a few days ago and even though this was essentially the first 6 episodes redone, I still thought it was incredible to watch. Everything was very well done visually and I felt it made a few things clearer than the actual TV show did.

I'm still confused as to whats happening with Lillith (or Adam) and why the name change for the movie. Hopefully 2.22 explains some of this a bit better.

This is what the horrible anime TV series should have been. Straight to the point, no stupid pointless filler slice of life non sense. Shinji was actually less whiny than I remember him from the series. Nice music and animation. I hope 2.0 keeps the same quality or gets better.

I liked it, but I have seen it already.... however, the climax was very good. I would however not suggest this to people who haven't seen the first couple episodes of the show though, they rush a bit and this movie was just made for that climax let's be honest, it is 2.0 and on when the real change should start.

And I died when I saw the commercial catch and the next time preview.

Woah, I did not enjoy that at all. The dialogue and transitions between scenes seemed very very forced. Nothing seemed natural and the characters were pretty irritating. The art and animation was really superb but every else about this was a disaster for me, I actually hated it.

Also, why was Shinji the pilot of Eva? Why did he get picked up in the beginning? The whole movie I was wondering this with no idea of why he was even there, it just made the whole experience even more unpleasant.

I don't know what to think. On one hand the fight scenes were cool, but I feel as though the depth of the characters was greatly sacrificed. It doesn't help that one of my favorite episodes at the beginning of the series, number 4, was pretty much completely cut out.

It also surprised me that Lilith was revealed so early, that could be interesting in the latter movies. Also, in some ways I like the new shinji but one of the best things about Eva has to be how the viewer is quite literally put in the main character(s) head. But, that was rarely the case here and it bothers me.

The last fight was cool and could be considered an improvement, except for the fact that this is a movie and, thus, the theater goers had to have some sort of finality. Whereas, the tv series had an episode the next week and so it didn't really have to be as dramatic.

Still, the Eva story was, and still is, really good. Shinji is still, basically, Shinji and Rei is still Rei, and Misato is still Misato. On that note, Misato actually seems to have a much better relationship with Shinji in this movie.

Of course, the thing that really worries me is how Asuka will be treated in the next movie.

8/10

This is proof that the second viewing my just make you enjoy something more than you previously did. Sure, I hate that they took out the "welcome back" train scene, but they replaced it with some other great scenes between Shinji and Misato. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever get sick of Evangelion's style and direction, which is in full effect here.

I also renounce my statement that this movie dumbed down the story, because I don't think it did. In some ways I think it's an improvement such as the introduction of lilith and Kaoru (i'm interested in how he will be used going forward), and the mention of Asuka. It makes the world feel "bigger" than it was and the story seems to be more planned out. Good stuff, 9/10.

I never watched the original anime, so my opinion will be completely based on the movies.

I was bracing myself the whole time for Shinji's whining/bitching/emo-ing, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. Did they cut out a lot of that? The art is super-fabulously-amazing and the soundtrack is great also. Now I'm really interested in watching the anime, but I'm so lazy, pfft.

It's been a while since I watched the TV series but I remember how much I strongly disliked Shinji in it, after after watching this I kinda empathize with his situation. Being put in that spot with all that pressure on him and yet being so young and emotionally distant. It has changed my views on the main character so I say overall a very good movie because Shinji doesn't seem so whiny anymore.

Had a nice balance of penguins.
It was enjoyable. But not MORE enjoyable then the series first six episodes.
I didn't like some scenes that were removed, but greatly enjoyed other scenes that were added in.

I would give it a 7.7. But not one I would round up to an eight.

I haven't watched the series of this in ages, so watching this film felt a little odd at times. At parts I couldn't figure out if it was a change from the series, or I just couldn't remember that part!

After the eyeball fuck that is the beginning to Death and Rebirth, this is a happy medium between that and the series. Sure, I was a little surprised how it started with Shinji just dropped in it right there, but I figured they wanted to get on with things and jump straight to action so first time viewers won't be put off by dialogue that doesn't immediately make sense.

Somethings are noticeably different however. Did they skip an angel? Would we have had a tent scene by now? Train platform? Ah well, I'll have to rewatch the series after watching 2.0 now!

Bit late to this party I suppose but I really enjoyed this movie. I wouldn't say it was better or worse than the series opening, but I do like how certain elements have been brought forward in the storyline, even if some parts felt a little rushed.

Give it a solid 8/10. Eva as a series got more interesting as it went on for me, so I'll be very interested to see what direction the Rebuild takes. Watching 2.0 tommorow, and I suspect it'll make me impatient for 3.0.

My thoughts while I was watching the anime:

I’ve forgotten this sound of cicadas sound, lol so much time passed since I watched NGE for the last time... or did it?
And the reworked Shinji... they’ve made him exactly like befor, except for the part that the quality is much better now. I just can do nothing more than enjoy animes with such good Blue-Ray quality
The Rei vision... whoah, what was that?
The reworked Angel... yeah, definitely the high definition is... HIGH! He looks way better now.
The effects are just too good either. I don’t think I’ve watched better-looking explosions to now(considering I’ve just seen the first Angel battle, lol). Now this is how mecha anime should look like.
Not sure if it’s from the Blue-Ray qualilty, or Misato’s ass is really hot, lol :D
I’ve forgotten of Shinji’s constant excuses -.-
And EVA-01 is plain badass – not that he wasn’t before, but...
Ok, it’s hard not to admit it – the battle between 4th Angel and EVA-01 was badass as awesome as can be... In the original series fights were kind of shabby(well, except for the End of Evangelion part of ‘em), but if NGE now has battles with quality from this range... I doubt that anyone can argue that it’s not the best Mecha anime-story.
“Are you sure about using your son? His mental state seems to be very unstable.” – this is the best description on Shinji I’ve ever heard -.-
“Sorry transfer kid. I had to hit ya.” – epic line is epic!
Ok, the fifth angel is well designed too.
Now, when the fights aren’t this shabby it’s way better to see what’s actually happening during the battles.
But I can’t really argue that Shinji did quite well during the fight against the 5th Angel.
Shinji really looks epicly with headphones on when he was far away from the city, doesn’t he?
I’ve always liked Rei very much, but now she’s even better-looking, and I’m somehow managing to like her even more than before!
6th Angel is well-designed too. And he seems to have even stronger firepower than the previous ones. I really remember that he was one real pain in the ass back in the series. But I wonder how the Bombardeer Angel’s destructions would look like(can’t remember if it was the 8th Angel or so).

Yeah, I actually liked this movie very much. At first I didn't expect it to be actual rebuild of the story - I thought we'll get some really fast preview on what we need and then the real shit will turn out to be some alternate ending. Maybe this is what will happen in future, but I never thought that the 4 movies are consequential rebuild of the original story. Anyway, it sure deserves top score.

And my personal score goes this way:

1. Characters. +1 Of course, EVA's most important aspect was always the characters - like they're nothing typical. I think that there's no point in commenting the characters all over again(I already did it for NGE). But a few notes - Rei Ayanami was presented in a slightly better way than in NGE, and I think that this is for good. First I thought that we'll get preview on Asuka too, but I guess she'll be the main flavor in the next movie.
2. Atmosphere. +1. Nonetheless, the atmosphere was always strong part of EVA, and I re-entered the feeling just with one hearing of the cicadas' sound(lol I'll probably remember them for my whole life).
3. OST. +1. I liked the ED(I don't remember any OP) and there were some tracks present besides the ED - I liked them too, I even think that they were 100% fitting the moment.
4. Animation. +1. Well if there was anything that I didn't like much about NGE(besides it's ending) was the animation designs - I know that back then the studio that worked on the series was low on budget, but still most of the Angels had horrible designs - unlike now. There wasn't single bit of this anime's animation style that I didn't like. If I've watched this movie first, I'd have barely been able to see NGE to it's end - the contrast between the art styles is just too great!
6. Storyline. +1. Storyline was never bad aspect of NGE. 1.0 followed kept the plot/story like 90% close to the original one and I have nothing against that. Although, I wonder why SEELE keeps Lilith as prisoner in this version, it was Adam who was captive in NGE far as I can remember.
7. Ending. +1. The director decided to end this movie after the defeat of the 6th Angel and it's totally ok for me - this was one of my favorite moments in NGE - the first time there were some kind of relationship between Shinji and Rei. Anyway, I never expected the last Angel to appear so early on the scene O.o
8. Fight scenes. +1. Nonetheless, with the new art design, the fights got much better than before - it was like I couldn't say "this was wrong" for any of the fighting scenes. They were just flawless.
9. Drama. +1. Idk if I had to give point here, but there was actually some drama in this part - like what can you say about Shinji's battle with himself? Or Rei's try to have some relationship even if it was with Shinji's father.
10. Overall feeling. +1. And why not? I didn't feel bad about watching this anime even for a single moment, and I'm not saying this because of fanboyism - in my opinion this anime was in fact flawless no matter how you look at it. It's like there's no actual reason that I can score low this anime. This one is just masterpiece - it's true masterpiece.

Overall score: 10/10

I feel like I lived to now just to see this anime ^__^

I watched Evangelion + EoE and now this movie during this week.

It looked pretty phresh, but didn't have the moody, traditional feel of the episodic series. Shinji is more-or-less the same gloomy character that you can oddly relate to. 7/10

at first i thought the remake would be reinventing the wheel. boy, i was way, way off.
it was a visual treat and i think the creators had the chance to shuffle some cards around, like introducing kaworu earlier. i admit that the old series is packed with more of the emotional elements, but i like that the remake offers a different set of emotional experience, perhaps lighter and not so dark, yet.

2.0 seems like a gigantic evangelion gathering with asuka, kaiji and kaworu & a new addition (':

First time I saw it, I thought it was nothing special: the pacing was weird, the fact that angels now explode in a pool of blood was gore and pointless, they removed the few moments that make you like the characters (like when Shinji says to Misato she's really immature for an adult), and frankly I thought Ramiel was utterly ridiculous.

Now that I saw 2.22, and rewatched the series, I can see all the work they've put on the details on every shot (the foot of Sachiel ffs), and the colors and lighting, like the first sequence was really green-toned in the original, and now it's a deep burgundy, and the lighting from the energy beams is really from out of this world. Also, since now they've changed the continuous nature of the A.T. field (now it's a stack of fields), I've come to terms with accepting Ramiel. Still have a problem with the pacing and the gore, but at least now I know why they made these artistical choices, and they were probably good choices if you consider what they were trying to achieve.

Can't wait to see 3.0 of course.
