This is definitely a recommended series, one that I believe will be one of the best of all time. That is if the second season is at least as good as this one. Because, yes, this first season ended very open ended, it was barely a cliffhanger, it doesn't feel like a season ending, they didn't even try to hide it being a 2-cour anime. shows action, it's good. But it's not about the action, it's more about the characters and they are well developed, they have depth and are interesting and they get philosophical at many points and for people that don't care only about action it's very engaging. That said, it feels a bit too slow at times. It's a near perfect realization of the premise, but it's not a perfect realization of its premise because despite it being a war for the holy grail between super strong warriors... they never seem intent on fighting or defeating each other, it's a bit anticlimactic and a bit disappointing most of the time. It feels like padding, it doesn't feel natural at all how the writer avoids battles and deaths. Because of that, this entire season felt like preparation and it feels like things still didn't begin to happen, they were simply put in place. It's not standalone at all, in any way. It felt like a prologue to set up characters and lore, which probably the producers intended it to be all along.

Before starting this review, I must first say I'm not being able to judge this movie properly. But I don't think it can be judged as any other movie, because it's, just like Digimon Tri, a movie about nostalgia, unable to be understood by people who didn't watch the original TV series. That is why it's impossible not to compare it with the Duel Monsters TV show. Yes, this might have more to do with the manga than the TV show, but still as an animation it has obvious ties to the old series, also, obviously, an animation.

say I was disappointed with this movie. But I'll start with the good. The characters and their interactions are spot-on, they are the same characters we know from before, and act accordingly. Though they are a little older now and, with the many advancements in storytelling that anime has suffered from then to now, this is definitely better written than the original show. It feels more mature whilst maintaining the original's edginess, necessary silliness and dark undertones. Another nice thing is the pace of the duels, they are fast and furious, but there's where we find the first mistake. It's too fast so they can't explain exactly what's happening and the duels use slightly different rules than before. Yes, it's a movie, so it can't waste time, but still it is a mistake.
Okay, now that I have nothing good more to say, to the bad we go. The visuals, although definitely boasting bigger budget than the TV shows, are uglier! They use a lot of extremely ugly and excessive 3D animation for the monsters, and a excessive color filters that leave everything lifeless. I don't know how could they fail so big. Another misdeed is the story, which, although touching on interesting subject matters, still fails to make sense and is devoid of explanations in all of the key moments. It's like it wasn't even meant to make sense, to begin with! Last but not least, Yami Yugi, the main character of the show and the manga, appears only at the last moments of the movie and, after all the hype for his appearance throughout the whole 2-hour duration of the film, he doesn't even have dialogue! It's super underwhelming and disappointing.
For all of this I'd say this movie was a waste of time and is totally unnecessary.

I have to begin this review by saying that albeit I'm giving it a full score, it is by no means perfect. It has many flaws. That said, there is an explanation for such contradiction and it is my own, personal method of evaluation. To me, if the pros in a work of fiction are big enough they negate the cons. And PP2 has spectacular highs. In fact, I consider the first season closer to perfection than this second, but this second season has much, much higher highs than the first season. It's just unfortunate that the lows are also lower.
STORY
The story is good enough,

very tense and at many points clever. It also never ceased to surprise me with its twists and turns. And the cliffhangers at the end of the episodes, ah the cliffhangers! It relies and feeds back much more into the mythology of Psycho-Pass than the first season, being much more sci-fi and much more investigative. But then there are the flaws. It's very bad at explaining some points in some parts, making it harder than it should to understand in an apparent way of trying to make some points more clever than they really are. Also, some characters are sidelined, like Ginoza, for example, that was an important character in the first season and now is just an extra in the background most of the time. But there is a positive side in the characters department too. Akane is AWESOME in this second season, finally worthy of being the main character, she's smart and brave and cunning. She's badass. And there is another female character that people will hate, and she is a good addition. Also the nemy is pretty much Makishima Shougo but only much improved. Makishima was good on paper but lacking in execution, and Kamui is a bigger threat and brings forth more interesting developments about Sybil.
ART AND SOUND
I'm putting them together because there is nothing much to say than that they're incredible. I'm not very good at judging animation, I think. I can't really see fails other people see, so take my judgement with a grain of salt. But the sound desing is good too, enhancing a perfectly paced, perfectly tense mood.
VERDICT
It's much better than the first season (but don't jump to it, it depends on the first season). And Psycho-Pass 2 also, in its final episode, gives a hint to future developments, but it's too open if a third season doesn't come to be. So I would recommend it. To everyone, I think its subject matter probably interests anyone. Some set pieces astound and the revelations, albeit I admit a bit silly at times, always manage to make sense. It's just good.

Story:
It is very welldone, the pacing is nice, since it is almost the same as the manga (in actuality, a light novel) that has perfect pacing. It is very suspenseful and clever, with excellent use of cliffhangers. Is is a battle of wits between Light and L (and some others latter on), that really differs from your usual shounen. It is nice to say, too, that Light is totally and completely the villain, and an excellent, sadistic, maniacal, bad person villain. And yet he's the main character, our point of view in the anime, which is nice for a change.
Soundtrack:

Since the opening, till the ending, and it really heps set the mood and heighten the tensions and suspenseful atmosphere with excellence. I just don't like the second opening and endings. The dub is also really nice.
Characters:
They are not very deep, and yet they have much flavor in them. The only character I particularly have a problem with is Misa Amane, she really does bring down the cast of the anime, she doesn't fit in.
Art:
Awesome. Takeshi Obata's art is very rich and sofisticated and translates well to the screen. It has many nice little touches here and there, with clever use of visual metaphors and little-to-none fanservice. It is also very cinematographic and intense.
In general, all of the aspects blend really well for a nice complete product.
