Alright, here we go with talking about this minefield of an anime. This anime draws a ton of deserved criticism for its pedophilic undertones and fanservice. But I don't believe that should be all that is focused on when talking about the show. What's packaged here is a pretty wholesome story about a teacher figuring out how to get through to troubled children.
The plot mainly revolves around Kokonoe, and her one-sided affection towards Aoki, her new teacher. The anime delves into why she feels this way, through what happened during her upbringing. She sees her mother kissing her cousin, and most likely lost her

idea of restricting who she feels affection for. Her mother dies, furthering her developmental challenges. Then, she attaches herself to Aoki, who acts similar to her father figure. What's important is that Aoki never forms a romantic relationship with Kokonoe by the end, but tries to treat her in a unique way that accounts for her difficulties.
This show has some great gags. For example, Kuro hitting Aoki in the nuts with various objects, or Houin's failed attempts at getting Aoki to go on a date with him. There's a surprisingly decent OST here. The main draw, though, is seeing whatever unhinged thing Kokonoe does, and how Aoki can respond to that in the best way he can.
But, the reason these aspects aren't appreciated is because of the underage fanservice and of course, that is a massive problem that detracts from the anime. The anime never says outright "Pedophillia is good," but it can be hard to believe that it doesn't when waving a bunch of children's panties at you. I don't believe that the fanservice was entirely bad when it came to Kokonoe since it would be hard to express how extreme her behavior was without it. But, it was unnecessary when it came to the other students.
All in all, a pretty conflicting show. Kind of got me interested in more anime that focus on teaching but without the underage fanservice. You won't get bored watching it, but it may tick you off at various points (I was honestly the most upset about unexpected incest). The show could have emphasized its themes better, but I like the themes it displays. Anime could have been so much worse, and I'm relieved that it wasn't.

Coming from being a massive fan of the touhou games, I was very interested in watching a fanmade anime revolving around the story of the games. I thought that this would be a chance to see each of the characters in action, with the fights being cinematic. Danmaku could be more visually appealing with the new medium. The characters could be more fleshed out than just the in-game dialogue before and after boss fights. However, my main issues with this anime lie in it being fanmade and the liberties they took from the source material.
To start off, none of the characters act as they do

in canon. This frustrated me, as I grew attached to the way ZUN wrote the characters. Seeing them act completely differently made me feel disconnected from them. This was purposeful, as they wrote for the fanon versions of the characters. The problem is, judging by this anime, I don't like the fanon versions of the characters and would've preferred if they tried to stick to the source material. Another liberty they took is with the amount of fan service. The Touhou games are completely devoid of fan service, which I think is the many great parts of them. I guess the Touhou fandom disagreed with this decision, considering they like to make porn out of nearly every character. But, that gets into the larger point of why I did not like this anime and it has to do with the way fans see the series. The anime paints the Touhou series mainly as a slice of life, with fan service and small antics to boot. The games are a direct opposite of that, there's constant fighting, there's politics, there's humor, and this anime is completely devoid of that. Instead, what does the anime have?
Like I said earlier, the anime is mainly a slice of life, with some brief fight scenes here and there. Ultimately, this led to me dropping the anime as I felt that there was a stretch of episodes where nothing notable was happening. It bored me, and I felt that I was wasting my time. The episodes are short, leading you to believe each moment will be jam-packed with information or plot development. The opposite was true which is such a shame.
After ranting about the many things I disagreed with when it comes to liberties with the source material, I'll get into what I did like. The art style and animation are amazing. For it being fanmade, it is impressive just how well they did when it came to those fronts. Due to this, when there is actual fighting and action, it can be very fun to watch. I just wish I could've been invested in those fights. The reason I'm only mixed is because I believe this anime could be great to the fanon. If you like the fanon characters, if you like fan service, or if you like slice of life when it comes to the touhou series, you'll probably have a great time. I think this accounts for a majority of the touhou fandom, which is probably why this anime has such a high score.

Going to be honest, this movie bored the life out of me. The pacing is SO slow. The characters are SO flat. The only bright spot was Puck, but we don't get enough of him. Despite that, everything surrounding him carried me through the movie. The villains sucked in a series with fantastic villains. Just really does not fit in with the quality of the rest of the series. Really did want to like this, since it was supposed to be Emilia's backstory. By the end of the movie, though, I just could not care less about her motivations and the whole climax. Never seen

pacing kill my enjoyment of something like it did for this. Such a shame. Really should have been some bonus OVA or something that was maybe half an hour.
Still glad I watched this as a massive Re Zero fan since it does enrich the world somewhat. Thought the monsters were pretty interesting and seeing how the characters ended up where they are in the show was nice. Don't really know about rewatching it, since it's a slog, but at least there are some cool things you can get out of it (no pun intended).

Probably the most well-written anime movie out there. Structured so well, with good pacing and progression. Leaves you pondering the many questions the movie will ask of you and each will have a sound, reasonable answer. Divides fans in a positive way. Everyone will have their own things that they take away from it. Can't believe something can juggle all these complex themes and concepts so smartly when other anime crumble or go off the rails at the idea. Super rewatchable. That doesn't even mention how gorgeous the whole thing looks.
So happy I finally got around to watching this series. Heard a sequel may

be coming sometime soon, so I'm looking forward to that. Still gonna miss it though.
