Having been acquainted with Mushishi's track record this far, I felt so much dread anticipating the tragic reveal. This series has gotten me very wary of the heartbreak to come. I was fully expecting the mother to die when Ginko came back, or the family be broken apart due to the mother losing all her memories. 18 minutes in and no tragedy? Impossible.

I didn't see the father starting a new family twist, but I did expect a tragic reveal in regards to him. What a piece of shit for not stepping up and letting his family know he's leaving them.

Cheating on someone just because got bored of them and how you can't control the thing in your pants is absolutely disgusting no matter the excuse, ugh. She's one of the least boring people you can be with because she literally enjoys everything like it's the very first time for her to experience things. I'm glad that she only had to go through such a traumatic experience just once before forgetting about him entirely because it really hit her hard. She's better off unknowing it and focusing on what she has now.

Too bad that there's no real cure for what she's dealing with but they're handling it pretty well so far.

The concept of memory loss is one that is rarely touched in anime, but I'll say this episode did a splendid job in portraying the sadness associated with it. There was one point in particular that was covered in a way that most could understand. Namely, the idea of subconsciously wanting to forget the bad things, such as a husband who runs off with his tail between his legs, abandoning his family, and starting a new one.

I thought that the wife instinctively continuing to make extra servings was especially sad. Deep down, that memory is still there, and it exists as a brief reminder of your past.

An episode that is fascinating, because it shows how the human mind is something prodigious and complex. The narration is once again painful, but also poignant and shows how strong the female figures are in facing the adversities of life.

A mushi with 0 cure?? Damn that was rough to see at the end, but I'm very happy she didn't forget her son. That would have been heartbreaking.

god damn, why are there so many memory eating/mind eating Mushi in this world?? Lmao these Mushi really like to feed of our impure, unmuture, fucked minds dont they xd wait or is this only me.
This also seems like our first Mushi that Ginko hasn't been able to find a way around, like there's physically no way to rid it unless you split that persons skull open and shine a torch into it. Interested to see other cases where it's legit impossible to cure the person of a Mushi because it would result in their death.

A good message to not laze around.

I'll have to say this is a bad ending since the problem itself is not really solved.

Okay... the first thing I want to say is... her husband is an asshole.

The sneeze scene... sorry, I laughed at that. Actually it was scary because his mother even forgot what a sneeze is but seeing her reaction made me laugh.

It was really sad when she wake up in the morning to forget many things.. I also feel sad for her son, imagine how bitter it is when he is the only one to remembers about his father's affair, and he can't say that to his mother. Plus he has to continue to help his mother to remember and do many things everyday. Good son, good son. Wish the best for his life.

As someone has said before, it seems like happy endings are getting rarer and rarer.. but at least no one died.

Bittersweet episode.

Doing a rewatch of the series.

Does anyone else think maybe the Dad got the same Mushi and forgot his wife and son? That's why he ended up in the next village over?

Quite chilling as while the woman's ailment has a supernatural cause like always, it resembles a more realistic neorological problem.

This is too sad for the kid, especially remembering everything while his mother forgot most of the painful memories.

The effects of this mushi are eerily similar to dementia symptoms, and it honestly makes it the scariest one so far. I'm just so glad that memories of her son are among the few she keeps intact no matter what.

I feel a little bit icky on this one because of how similar it is to Alzheimer's, but I do know that it's not supposed to go that route and is only supposed to be about fantasy creatures that infect humans. Still, it is a little bit too close for comfort to me. Also, one of the things Ginko recommends was something Sayo was already doing - constantly thinking of the things she doesn't want to forget, including her husband. She didn't forget to do that. The only progress in the story is when Sayo and Kaji find the father near the end of the story and find out he was cheating on Sayo and made a whole new family, and that caused her to forget about her husband and everything but Kaji and their home. Even then, she still performs the same habits to honor her husband, just without remembering why she does it anymore. It just kinda feels like a nothing episode to me compared to all the episodes I've seen so far.

It's too bad there's no cure for her, but at least she is content. Sometimes Ginko doesn't have all the answers.

Honestly, she doesn't forget the important things, that's good but kinda bittersweet considering she still sets a place for the Grade-A asshole husband.
