The fights, the enemies and the reason why they fight. The first 7 tankoubon are crack but then it starts the good part of the history.

These two manga have very similar feeling story arcs at least in pattern, though one is about the mafia and the other is about shinigami they both have the same battle manga mantra of "must get stronger" etc.
Similar fights, lots of power ups and supernatural abilities. Similar character personalities and design.
