The main female characters are very similar. Tohru and Mi-hyang are kind-hearted and they live with people who aren't their relatives. Mi-hyung lives with Seh-gyum who has a personality similar to Kyo and there is Seh-hyn who is like Yuki.The atmosphere in Dear Waltz is heavy from the start and Fruit Basket gets darker in the 2nd half. Both manga have characters with tragic backgrounds.
