Ao no Exorcist grapples with horror and supernatural themes that Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun also presents. However, Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun focuses more on the characters and so I happen to think the romance and friendships in this anime are more believable. Even so, for both of these animes, it is true that their respective manga is highly superior.
