Both are psychological violence that have characters with cute designs are overtaken by fatal violent encounters.
Both have moe character designs but also have horror elements. The characters can go from looking cute to looking psychotic very quickly (much more so in Higurashi though as GwKT has much less horror overall). Aside from the art styles, they do not have very much in common though.
