In each anime, the protagonist is an immature and loud-mouthed, yet well-meaning, young boy who grows up and learns to view the world less selfishly after a mysterious girl happens into his life (Kouichi encounters Emi, while Garrod is hired to rescue Tifa). And in both instances, the girls bestow upon them an awesome mobile armor (Kouichi is made a co-Factor of the Linebarrel, and Tifa shows Garrod where to find the long-forgotten Gundam X).
Both anime also focus a lot on the characters, and not so much the political warfare of the battling mecha.
